Dachau's 1200nd birthday 2005 / Dachauer Volksfest

Celebrate in July and August

Celebratory events have been organised for Dachau's 1200nd birthday.

The weekend of 23rd-24th July features children's activities; arts and crafts, workshops and the Kinderzirkus Krullemuck (children's circus) offer not only fun for your children, but also information on the history of Dachau. For the finale, the Sternschnuppe-Band (shooting star band) will be giving a musical request concert.

The climax of the celebrations are, of course, the Dachauer Volksfest (Dachau festival) from 13th August till 22nd August.

The festival begins with a traditional social gathering in the beer tent on the evening before the opening. At 2pm on the next day, the Lord Mayor Peter Buergel does the official tapping of the keg to declare the festival to be opened.

On 14th August, cyclists will be fighting for the 54th time for the Dachauer Bergkriterium (info here)

On the bank holiday Maria Himmelfahrt, a children's procession will be led through the old town to the festival, where a large firework display will be lit in the evening.

By the way - the Dachauer Volksfest is well known for having cheap beer prices.
What to expect - a funfair with a big wheel, rides, ghost train, candy floss, food and beer tents.

Address :
Ludwig-Thoma-Wiese

Supposed to be quite a pretty town, unfortunately overshadowed somewhat by the concentration camp. But thanks for the tip, UA, it sounds like fun.

Yeah it's usually a lot of fun, and it's less hectic than Oktoberfest.
Unfortunately last year (or was it the year before?) there was a storm and torrential rain the night I was there, including powercuts, lightning bolts splitting trees and general total chaos. Walking back to the Sbahn I was shocked at the trees half in cars, half on the roads blocking them.
Hopefully this year the weather will behave.

I also suggest you take a quick walk up to the Dachau castle - you get a great view from up there of the Volksfest.
NOFXmike
was there last year...reminded me of a very small town festival in MN...nothing too great, but nice if you want to stop by the "schloss" and then have a couple beers ...I have pics of it on my site

As UrbanAngel pointed out it's also one of the cheapest (Beer price) Bierfests in Bavaria, but it doesn't start until August 12...

I've been to the Volksfest for the past few years...and everytime it's been a blast. Maybe I should organize another TT outing there...?? The beer is pretty good, but make sure they serve it to you cold.

Apparently after last years Dachauervolksfest I was the most drunk, EVER! laugh.gif

Dachau is really nice. We played a gig in Ludwig Thoma haus and I have been wanting to go back there for a look see smile.gif This will be a great opportunity. Thanks for the info UA.

We found it quite funny when we saw the posters for this celebration of Dachau... :} Do es the 1200 include those years during the war smile.gif

Good job they don't say that they will have grill parties and tell people to bring family and friends along too... LOL
Showem
Har har har. Not.

Jeez, a town gets a nasty outsourcing for 1% of the time it's around and people can't do anything but talk about that.

One would think you would be a bit more open-minded than that HartlepoolLad.

Obviously, being Canadian, you do not understand British humour! smile.gif

Obviously, being a Brit, you can't come up with any new jokes that aren't based on WWII.

Any plans to visit Dachau Camp and other surrounding places. A day trip kind of... I would be very interested. smile.gif

Just like the UK VE day celebration date didn't include the vicous bombing of Dresden??

Let's just hope the next elderly ex-National-Socialist you meet doesn't realise your own sexuality, or maybe you will be specifically invited to his next grill party...

Reminds me of a fantastic joke, don't read on if you're the easily offended sensitive type.

Q:What's worse than finding a worm in your apple?

A: The Haulocaust

Mwa!
