I want to pop into town later to grab a PS2 game (the new Medal of Honour if it's out over here) and a new controller - but I've never bought anything for my PS2 over here - any tips as to where I should go??? (price not as critical as a good choice).

Cheers.

I'm sure there's plenty, but upstairs in Hertie seems to have a big range of games software. Also, Saturn probably has the biggest selection of all.
profundo
I actually have seen it in Muller in the basement (in Tal). But that was before X-mas and I don't remember if they actually *had* the New MOHFL.
Happy hunting. smile.gif

don_riina
Forget all big stores like Herti and stuff. They'll have only the krout versions of games. Some games are multilingual, some are not (instructions always in German, but who cares about that). Gamezone at either Ostbahnhof or some other place (Pasing?) are much better as they are a gaming shop. Gamezone.de is the website, and you can check the online shop for the game you want, and if they have a proper, sorry english, version. Medal of Hono(u)r Rising Sun is there, but only the dt version. Might mean that the game language itself can be set to English, but gamezone will let you play and check for yourself before you buy.

Theres a place on Orleanstrasse near to the sex shop...sorry, just near Ostbanhof station. I got my gamecube there. Prices arent too bad, plus they do have a selection of 2nd hand games as well.

Alternatively you could buy from ebay, most people will ship here, and you get the games in English. I bought Spiderman for the GC for 12€, which at the time I thought was a bargain, but the entire game is in German, so Spidey you can imagine talks like a complete twat.
Jimbo
Thanks Don - I wouldn't want to shoot any Japanese soldiers, and have them scream in German at me...
canuck
There's a new place (that only sells video games) that opened up on Augustenstrasse near Heßstrasse in Schwabing. It doesn't look too bad, although I never actually bought a game there. I'm not sure how much business they do...I walk past it every so often and I have yet to see a customer. It could be a bit 'teuer', it's Schwabing.
Jimbo
Cheers for the tip - that's 10mins walk from me, so I'll check it out now. Their first customer perhaps!!!
egg
another place is inside the Isartor Sbahn enterance across from MacDonalds...
Jimbo
@Canuck - just been in - utter shite, no wonder they have no customers! Won't be going there in future. Gonna try in town later on, or perhaps Ostbahnhof.
bex
do they not do them in WOM?
Ketchup
If you know which game you want, a little surfing usually results in being able to get it cheaper. I got Halo + 2 other games for the X-Box off the ProSieben website of all places...only 30 EUR! Of course if you have the itch today online obviously won't help you.

Amazon.de also looks they have quite a few games with several on sale. "Barbie rettet die Wildpferde" looks like a sure winner! wink.gif Otherwise, Saturn or Media Markt.

By the way, anyone else have an XBOX? I am curious if anyone has tried XBOX Live.
don_riina
XBox live is apparently quite stable, but its still early days for the service, and frankly I have not seen anything yet making me want to bother. PCs are still the king of connected gaming. Besides, as far as I can see, the best XBox games out are single player only. Knights of the Old Republic, and Jedi Knight.
I think the XBox Lounge bar has the live set up, so you could go there and find out if it is worth a blast or not.
Ketchup
@Don - Thanks for the tip. I'll try to drop by.

@Jimbo - So did you actually buy something?
Jimbo
No, i went to the pub and accidentally ended up getting pissed. I'll go and try again either later today or tomorrow and post my findings.
3 Lions
Personally I am waiting for the next RE game for the GC. Does anyone else own a Gamecube?

Jimbo
As far as I know Ken, you are the only person in continental Europe with a Gamecube. There was talk of someone in Japan buying one once, but nobody's ever been able to prove it...
don_riina
Not true Jimbo, I know of somebody else with a Gamecube. Granted, he uses it as a doorstop, but still.
Jimbo
All they're good for. That and Star Wars of course.
3 Lions
And the resident evil series, Metroid Prime amongst others!!

I stand by my purchase, plus as Don says, it has its extra uses!!

In fact it is a better console than the PS2 (FACT!!)

One might say that you are somewhat "accident-prone"...

Better be careful or you might end up waking up one morning next to a Gamecube with the full complement of all three games which are sold for it...

Shhh...my girlfriend might be reading. Frankly I would rather wake up next to 3 Lions then I would a Gamecube. And all 3 games. ohmy.gif
Ketchup
I don't know...he might try to make you breakfast...or give you VD...

but that still would probably be easier to get rid of than a Gamecube

A games console is only as good as the games you can get for it - that's why the PS1 did so well despite there being better consoles. And the same holds true for the PS2 (although the X-Box is also doing very well in that respect now).

When I first bought my PS2 I ordered the games I wanted from the UK, because I wanted them in English. I stuck the first one in the machine and the first thing it asked was "Choose your language" - English, German, French, Italian or Spanish.

So when I bought my X-Box I didn't bother ordering games from the UK, instead just buying them here. I stuck them in the machine, and discovered they only had German (it didn't bother me THAT much, as I figured I could call my game playing "German revision").

It seems that many PS2 games have multiple languages, while the X-Box games only have one. I've even bought some PS2 games over here which only had English. The trouble is I've not yet found a way to be sure whether a particular PS2 game actually does have multiple languages or not. Some of them have a German flag on the back (which seems to mean that German is available) but they don't cater for the people who want it in English (which is strange, because I know some Germans who prefer their games in English due to the frequently poor translations).

I'm really looking forward to trying Halo 2 on the X-Box live...
3 Lions
Well for one thing the PS2 has the dominant share of the market because it has the widest range of games & exclusives titles. Plus it has been on sale for a much longer period of time.

The X-Box is the most powerful and probably the best of the three, but the PS2 is still way ahead. I think the X-Box price is now 99 quid!!

The gamecube was designed as an out and out console, no main hard drive, no DVD, no internal modems, basically no add on crap. So more effort was put in to the internal performance.

The Gamecube was actually the biggest selling console at Christmas just gone.

Still I wouldnt mind owning a PS2, just for GTA & GTA3. You know me I just want to go out pick up a couple of prostitutes and shoot them tongue.gif I can safely say that without a barmaid stood right behind me blink.gif

Careful - Gunther Murphys read this site. As you may or may not know, I got a PM from the bar on Wednesday night, asking where I was...be afraid. Be very afraid...
3 Lions
Yes, now I can become '3 Lions AKA Ron Weasley AKA Nail Polish Guy AKA The prostitute Killer!!'

That's what I got my PS2 for! You can get those games for the X-Box as well now, though - I suspect that the raw buying power of Microsoft is going to push the X-Box into the lead, as they can afford to exclusively buy all the best gaming licenses.

Having said that, I got the X-Box for Halo, and that's out on the PC now...

Relax, I think it's just that the auditors were in town on Wednesday and had some questions:

Auditor: "And this revenue item "Jimbo" um, surely this some sort of joke, I mean Christ Jesus that's roughly the GDP of Angola"

@AquaticMeringue

Waiting for Halo2 myself. Ever played Halo with the System Link? I've heard it's a lot of fun when you get 8 playing at the same time.

Its a real pain. You just NEVER know. Sometimes there is a flag, sometimes not.
I got Fifa 2003 on the Xbox and it had a language choice. Most of the time EA sports games do in fact.
I got Fifa 2004 on PS2, though, and there was a lingo choice. German or French. Well pony.
Anyway, screw Fifa, all versions are shite. Get PES 3 instead, and yes it has a language choice.

Gamezone are generally pretty good at letting you have a quick crack to check if a game includes English. Like AquaticMeringue, I know a number of Germans who prefer their games in English.
sparty
I will stick to my PC-games...they work perfectly, are mostly cheaper and easy to download biggrin.gif
randy
Just be sure not to pick up a copy of Big Rigs
don_riina
Slow day at work, so time for some more gamecube bashing.

QUOTE
So more effort was put in to the internal performance.

Is that so? Hmmm...

Polygons
GameCube: 6 to 12 million polygons per second

PlayStation 2: 75 million polygons per second

Xbox: 150 million polygons per second

Clock Speed
GameCube: 485MHz

PlayStation 2: 300MHz

Xbox: 733MHz

Memory
GameCube: 24MB of 1T-SRAM (main), 16MB of 81MHz DRAM (main),
and 3MB of embedded 1T-SRAM in the graphics chip

PlayStation 2: 32MB Direct Rambus RAM (main),
4MB of embedded DRAM on the graphics chip

Xbox: 64MB of RAM (unified memory architecture)

Memory Bus Bandwidth
GameCube: 2.6 GB/s (Gigabytes per second)
PlayStation 2: 3.2 GB/s (Gigabytes per second)
Xbox: 6.4GB/s (Gigabytes per second)

Sony & Microsoft quote the raw performance, whilst Nintendo base their figures on actual performance during gameplay, so the polygon bit could be very misleading.
Granny
I bought loads of PS2 games as stocking fillers over the Christmas period. Albeit not the latest but the "weans" loved them. They buy all the new stuff themselves and often miss out on a good game because it was not deemed to be popular at the time.
"Spyro, Butt ugly martians, Hulk and Men in black" all spring to mind as that's the only ones I remember, but I bought loads of them. Some displayed only a German flag, whilst others had French or Spanish flags as well as the German one, nevertheless, they are all in English.
Karstadt, Real and various toy shops were my hunting ground and I paid between 5-20 euro each. I also purchased "Game boy advance" for similar prices but a few were only in German. My four year old grandson can play the German games with ease therefore, I'm sure they wouldn't be a problem for my learned friends in TT?
Saturn also had a few games for 20euro but the ones I noticed could be purchased cheaper elsewhere. They also have a few of the latest, more popular titles and are still less expensive than the UK prices. It all depends on what you want, hope this helps.
SleeplessInMunich
A quick question for PS2 onwers. Do most of the games here in German have the option of selecting to play in English? Is there anyway to tell which games are playable in English beforehand?
3 Lions
Sometimes there is usually a British flag on the back to denote it can be played in English. If you're not sure, get your games from GameZone on Orleanstr at Ostbanhof, I have it on reliable information that they will let you test the game to see if it can play in English.
SleeplessInMunich
Problem is there are a few games currently on sale in Saturn that I was looking at and I don't think they will let me open the game to try it out...
3 Lions
They will probably have the same titles at GameZone(Ostbanhof) and GameCity(Isartor) and they will let you test them.
SleeplessInMunich
Aye, I caould do that. Bit cheeky though. Test 'em at one place and then go and buy 'em in another.
Topsy
ach, if you go to confession next sunday and 'fess up you'll be alright... wink.gif
3 Lions
Technically you should ask at Saturn if its in English, if they say yes and it isnt, take it back. I hear the customer service is good there.
don_riina
Could also post the game titles, and see if anybody already has bought that game, and therefore knows. I've had games with no flag on the box that still play in English, games that I thought would play in English due to previous versions doing so, but been dissapointed when they turn out German, games where the language was German but it was no bother, subtitled games. Loads basically.
SleeplessInMunich
Okay as don suggested, if anyone has bought any of the following games here in German could you prehaps tell me whether or not they are playable in English or German only:

Champions of Norrath
Soul Calibur 2
Spiderman
Marshbot
There is a game shop near Hauptbahnhof but I can't think of the name of it. A couple of blocks down Schillerstrasse on the left, it sells 2nd hand & new games. (There is another one directly across the road from it too but I think they only do new games).
The guys there are pretty friendly and loaded up a game I wanted to buy to check if they had English in the menu (as it didn't specify).
Also, they have let me return and exhange a game the following day when I found it didn't have an English option.
Topsy
the one on the right-hand side is PC Fun, I think
they're OK in there, but not that friendly
thnx for the tip about the one on t'other side of the road, though - sounds good
3 Lions
Cant help you on two of those, but I bought Spiderman for my Gamecube, it was in German!! mad.gif Still playable, just couldnt understand a word. Borrowed Spiderman 2 off Mr Riina for the X-Box and that only played in French!! dry.gif
SleeplessInMunich
laugh.gif might be a way for me to practice my languages.
Marshbot
Oh, and another tip.
Some of the games don't have English listed on the package, or in the main game menu - but if you go into your System Config on the PS2 without the game in there you can make sure your console is set to English - and then the game will play in this. (This is what the guy at the 2nd hand shop worked out for me for a Res Evil title. Obviously for some games only).
