English-speakers in Nuremberg

Anyone want to meet up?

Toytown Germany > Discussion forum > South Germany > Franken & Oberpfalz > Events and meetups
hunnybunny
Well, hello to every one. I am new to this service and i am enjoying reading what you guys have to say. I have been living in Germany now for 10 months and i am now finding it very depressing. I have not found one english speaking person here. (Nürnberg) where are you guys? anyone here in Nürnberg? I will tell you that living on the other side of europe is so much fun but, i came here thinking that this would be like America or Canada. On my normal side of the ocean people are so friendly and so much different than here.In America or canada you can go into a dicso alone and come out with a few new friends, atleast drinking buddies, what a disappointment that the culture is not as open as over there. I have been told by my husbands friends (Germans who speak broken english) that Nürnberg is the worst city to live in and the the other cities of german are better and more social. Do you think this is true? So, Any one in Nürnberg or surrounding area, let me know where you are and lets hook up and have some fun!!
DDBug
Try meeting these guys. I know them, they speak english, and they are a friendly bunch. Just give them a call - I know they would be happy to meet another English speaker (honest, they told me that last week).
profundo
Visit a church. English speakers often congregate (heh, no pun intended) and you can get connected to many activities in the area. Sometimes retreats for the weekend might lead you to another city for fun, or just stop by because you like the pot-luck dinners. I would expect lots of families just like in Munich to attend as well as young couples and single people.

With the church scene you might not see on their bulliten board things like "Stitch and Bitch" or "Beer Garten Sunday" but you never know. Even if you aren't religious you might just like the people and make a few good friends.

Get a dog. Seriously, loads of people start talking to you when you have a dog, albeit in German. They generally ask the same questions, "how old is he?", "does he bite?" etc, so its a bit like a taxi driver conversation, "been busy tonight?" etc, but you also meet some thoroughly weird random people. When I first moved here, we had a dog, and I quite liked life. Then he kicked the bucket, and Germany seemed bloody awful. Got a great new dog in the house now, and everything seems hunky dory again.
OK, half the time the people I meet yabber on in some thick bayern accent, and I get completely lost in what they're saying, but its always a right old laugh.
I live a bit outside Munich, and there is alwas lots of weird local shit going on. Takes a bit of time for people to accept you it seems, but if you just go to shitloads of local events, your face gets known, people start giving you a bit of respect and soon enough you'll get fed up with having to say gruss gott to every single person you walk past once you leave your house.
All esle fails, get the train to Munich and go to the Twisted Bavarian, The Arc or wherever. Loads of English banter, and more likelyhood of simply plonking yourself down at the bar, and starting up a conversation with somebody - not always so easy in German bars, because of the tendancy to sit at tables in groups.
eurovol
Yeah get a dog and then weird people with dogs will tell their dog to kiss your dog and in Bayerish it will sound a whole lot like them telling their dog to "get the pussy, get the pussy"! laugh.gif

I have had the exact same experience. Old and young, male and female - all have started conversations with me when I bring the dog along. Even when I tell them I don't speak German, they try to ask questions anyway (either in English or simplified German). I would say I have learned half of my (very limited) German vocabulary through these encounters. At the very least, people will smile and nod at us, which can really brighten my day!

Or a puppy.
Taking a puppy to the park or to the pub increases your chances of getting laid by 83 percent. Fact.

Know what you mean, Hunnybunny... You have to get used to it. I've been here 5 years.. I have lots of peaves. but there are some upsides.

Let me know if you need some guidance..

Are there no TTers in Nürnberg to befriend this poor Frau? wink.gif

Hunnybunny, I recommend following DDBug's suggestion. If there wasn't a Toytown in Munich, the next best thing would probably be the 3H.
Showem
Actually, I'd put HHH before Toytown. But then again, I'm biased. However, the HHH will introduce you to people all over the world, not just Munich. Anyways Hunnybunny, I saw your message on the mail list, unfortunately you just missed their running day, but hopefully some will write you.

However, Nürnberg is a nice little place and although you might not make friends the same way you did at home, it doesn't mean you won't make them. Find something you are interested in doing and try and find a group that does it. From dancing, church, pottery, fitness, singing, music, whatever. If you join a group, you have an instant group of potential friends. Certainly people you will at least talk to and get to know.
tom_a
Just curious: What's "3H" alias "HHH"?

Tried a Google search, but the best I could come up with was an all-Japanese chat site, which presumably is not what you are talking about.
hunnybunny
thanks for all your advice. i did meet up with HHH yesterday and i had a great time talking with them. they are very fun and interesting people. atleast the ones i met. i look forward to seeing them again, if i get invited back,...hehehe ok guys, hope you guys had a great weekend,,hunnybunny

HHH = Hash House Harriers. Their motto, I think, is "A drinking club with a running problem". Follow the links in this thread for more details.

Or follow this link for the Munich Chapter.
MonksTown
I hope it works out for you OK. smile.gif

For me personally the upsides of living in Germany far outweigh the downsides.

On the friends thing, I think it is a qualatitive issue.
I have got German friends, just, it takes time to become friends, its a slow process.
Small Town Boy
I was going to suggest Expatica, but looks like you already found it. Unless there are two hunnybunnies in the Nürnberg area...
Propellor Head
Whoa, I just read some of the posts on ExpRatica and they make Toytown look civilized and grown up.
hunnybunny
No, im the hunnybunny in Nürnberg...Yes, i was there. best advices comes from here... biggrin.gif
Scogs
I am sure there is an Irish bar there no idea what it was called, we went last year and watched a cup final...the place was about 90% english speakers...is it still open? all I can remember was it was near the rail station
interplanetjanet
Now that Scogs mentions establishments there, I went to both a really yummy Indian restaurant and - believe it or not - a really yummy Mexican restaurant there. I'll have to take a look a map and tell you where they're located...

FYI: Virtual Tourist has a decent collection on Nurnberg Info

I think the place IPJ might mean is the The Enchilada at the Obstmarkt in Nurnberg. Met a lovely couple once that mentioned it to me. Sure enough theres a damn good review, also on Virtual Tourist.

OH and PS to IPJ: its not always about you...I read the post as a dig at both you and Scogs wink.gif

Even though I used to live in Erlangen, I can't remember the name of that Irish pub either! sad.gif It is next to the underpass leading to the main station as you are going/coming to the main city centre/shopping area.
In Erlangen, the Goldener Mond (run by Vinnie - a big sturdy Irish man) and The Fat Lady (run by Swan - another Irishman - makes great toasted sandwiches) would be the two places to go to if you wanted to meet ex-pats.

So my friend Lou is new to Germany and looking to expand her social life.

Unfortunately she is outside of the Munich scene, but thats where the job is.

Anyone other expats or English speaking Germans living around the Ansbach/Neurenburg area and interested in a meet-up???

Adult friendfinder? I get emails from girls "in" Regensburg all the time.

Hi Honeybunny,

I am Australian and have lived (near) and worked in Nuremburg for two years. I met one Australian at a party last Christmas and that was it. But there seem to be many Americans in Erlangen (10 mins away from here) - I hear their accents in Aldi.
boomtown_rat
she's moving to Berlin now
Cynthia
Hi Gemini, tell Lou I'm here.
Elfenstar
I'm sure you know about the military base in Ansbach (if it's still open).
boomtown_rat
hunnybunny would no doubt be pleased to hear from you, although it seems she's contemplating a move to Berlin
hunnybunny

Are there any kind of ex-pat meet-ups in Nürnberg? I've heard of one organised by the GFK? Does anyone have any details? Would like to meet others who've been here for a while and instead to stay a while longer too...
lindyloo2
I´m new to all this, whats the GFK? Have been in Germany for nearly five years and have not heard of an expat or Brit Group. Is there anyone else out there in Nuernberg area?
Adi
I'm told there are plenty of Brits working at Adidas in Nuremberg.
Stuza
Seems a bit desperate ... but its not, promise!

We have a group of friends already but we wish to expand our social circles more, so, anyone fancy a beer? unsure.gif

We also need to be shown where to get a good old fashioned "English Curry". Tadsch Mahal is ok but ... just ... not quite "there" biggrin.gif

I'm taking a day trip to Nürnberg this Sunday, 28 May, with my 15-yr-old daughter to do the Kaiserburg, Dürerhaus, a couple churches and the Lochgefängnisse. I would like to meet some TT'ers who can help us find our way around (not that I haven't been to Nürnberg before) and would like to show off their adopted city.
PM me if you're interested in meeting up.
thompsha
Hi there,

I am new to this site but have been living in Nürnberg for 3 years, so I was just having a read through some of the questions...

There is an English pub now (the only one in Nürnberg) which has been there for about 8months, it's not in the city centre but in the area not far from the Hauptbanhof (main train station) and the nearest U-bahn is Weißer Turm.

Hope that helps!

Hhhmmm! I've only been here in Nuremberg for a few hours. I'm British, but recently lived in Sweden for five years so I know the value of meeting native English speakers... If anyone wants to get in touch then that would be nice.

It certainly didn't take you long to find Toytown. biggrin.gif Welcome!

Ye' I've moved here for my job. I've spent the day walking around town and to be honest the jury is still out.
UrbanAngel
Welcome! Let us know how the Nuernberger sausages taste like up there smile.gif

Welcome to Nuremberg!

Not sure if you have stumbled across many bars here yet but there are plenty to choose from although it's a small city in comparison to many in the UK so it may take you some time to settle in!

If you want to meet up with some English speakers then of course the Irish bars are where you will find some and the English pub the Kings Arms, which is closed from this week for 2 weeks due to the fact that this place becomes like a ghost town in August!

As I've been living here for a while just let me know if you need some info. on anything and I'll try my best to help, or even someone to give you a pub tour! smile.gif
Irishguy19
just go the irish pubs. There is like 4 of them and all the english speakers hang out in them

Hiya!

While I'm still living in Passau, it's quite likely that I'll be coming to Nürnberg quite often and will want to hit the town and make some friends. Aussies are always great company (except for that one guy I met in Passau recently who couldn't keep the same story for longer than 5 minutes, but he had a cool drunk-Aussie accent - I adopted my mother's correct English.za accent). biggrin.gif So long as I don't screw things up in the meantime, I'll probably move to Nuremberg in February/March, as my girlfriend is doing her Jura-Referendariat there for 2 years, starting in October. Nürnberg has better IT-related job opportunities than Passau, also. cool.gif

I'll get in touch when she's settled and I'm up there.

have not been to nuernberg in a long time...but have been in germany since 1986 and have lived in cities/areas from east to west and north to south...if you know a bit about the culture, mentality and language you should have no problems with making friends...
Alexis
I will be moving to Erlangen (15 minutes from Nurnberg) 1st week of November. I lived in Munich for 2 years and liked it there. I am a little nervous about moving to MittleFranken. I passed by Roxy :-( the only English cinema (please let me know if there is another one) and that was a depressing experience. I am mother to a toddler, loves clubbing and meeting new people.
erman
hi folks,

Happy to announce that you have a new Nürnberger English speaker friend:) The one who has difficulties to get used to here. I hope we will be in touch.

Enjoy the Germany.

Erman

Hello all! I have just arrived in Nuremberg, and I'm wondering how many other TTers are in this town. My German is currently non-existent, so it'd be nice to be able to have the occasional beer with other English-speakers in the area!
