Hi,

not sure if this is a "Germany" thread or a "Misc" thread. Feel free to move it if necessary.

I may need to clear copyrights to either audio material or novel extracts in the future. Has anyone any idea whether in Germany:

1) material over a certain age (say 100 years) becomes public (like, can you quote Goethe to make money, without paying for the quote?)

2) there is a certain "free" limit to the amount you can use without paying for it. For example, I believe you can copy up to a certain amount of a book. I think it's some really small percentage of the total text like 1% or 0.1% or something. Or less than a certain percentage of the length of a song.

and finally

3) where can I find a decent lawyer to tell me about this stuff?

Jimbo - you must know some, oder? biggrin.gif

Copyright lawyers in Germany? Off the top of my head, no, I don't -reckon katrina is a good bet though. Any problems finding one, let me know, and I'll have an ask around and see if I can't get a name for you.

Hiya
Nah all my contacts are patents and industrial IP, not specifically this kind of thing.
Here is the legal text though:
German copyright law text as of Sept. 2003
You really need some good legal advice though and I am not a lawyer.
Please get some legal advice, maybe one of our publishing types would be able to help as it is more their stuff?
