I am planning on going to Milan within the next three weeks. Does anyone know a cheap way to get there rather than take a train?
michnic
fusilli, have you checked http://www.gexx.de/ ?

Cheap flights to destinations around Europe, though I haven't tried it myself.
Keydeck
I've used Gexx to go from here to Vienna. Excellent stuff! However, they don't fly to Milan from here.

Can anybody suggest a discount airline that flies between Munich and anyplace in northern Italy? I need to make it to Turin (understanding I can't fly direct Munich-Turin, however, but railing it from there should be easy).

Alternately, is Munich-Turin a reasonable railway trip? Which websites should I check for getting a good rail fare?

Thanks in advance.

I've flown direct to Turin from München many time, I think the airport is called Malpensa (there are two in the local area from Turin). I flew with Air Dolomiti, I believe they are part of the Star Alliance with Lufthansa.

@Thyroid, Malpensa is one of the two airports in Milan not Turin.
Have you guys tried the Alitalia (part of Skyteam) website, somtimes they have speacials/ last minute discounts and you could find a flight direct Munich-Milan for about 99euros.
I tried to see what was available and seems liek if you book for a flight leaving the 21st of May (Munich to Milano Malpensa) and returning the 24th of May, the price is arround 114 euros. Maybe with a little digging and tweaking you can get a better deal.
Cant garantee that there wont be delays however.
Worth a try.
cheers

Hiya
Turin does have an airport: Citta Di Torino (TRN).
Amadeus (the same system that travel agents use) will find any flight to anywhere.
Lufthansa flies direct but you will have to shop for deals (try http://www.opodo.de etc).
There are 4 airports in Milan, Air Dolomiti, Airitalia and LH fly to Malpensa and Orio Al Serio (BGY), Austrian and Air One fly to Linate (LIN) but not directly from MUC. You can't fly to Segrate SWK from Munich.
You can also get the bus to Milan from Munich (and it is not that dear either).

A good website for finding out which budget airlines fly where is whichbudget.com. From Munich they list flights to Elba, Naples, Rimini and Rome. I'm afraid that my Italian geography is rather weak so I'm not sure which of those are in northern Italy sad.gif

For the trains, have you heard about SparNight?? You can travel overnight for 29 euros one way across Europe. Destinations from Munich to Italy include Venice, Milan and Rome. Never done it myself though.

BTW, you can book trains to Italy on the normal German Railways website.

i had a nighttrain journey a couple of times. It really is comfortable and easy but would def recommend "Liegeplatz"which is like a bed... on these trains it is like 49€ one way, but u save a night in a hotel and you are there early. It seems like u could take the night train to Milano and travel the rest with a normal train.
For further information u call call the Deutsche Bahn. Their service no is 11861 (no city code)
Check the routes here. Just make sure u book it early enough as these ways are usually booked up.

If they fly there, I don't recommend LTU.

I just flew to and from Teneriffe with them.

You must pay for your own beer and headphones for inflight entertainment!

Service was crap.

Never again if possible.

I'd recommend the night train.

Guns'n'Roses wrote a song about it, and it absolutely rawked.

Does anyone know of how one can go about obtaining a cheap flight to Napoli. Only want to stay one night, which is clearly a problem when it comes to price sad.gif .

Any ideas about rough prices for the overnight train from Munich to Naples? Diebahn.de doesn't do pricing/Preisauskunft for foreign networks, so it's problematic assessing costs. I've to get to a wedding in Sorrento for the first of June.

They don't make it easy to find, but this is the booking page for night trains (click 'Anwendung öffnen'). Avoid weekends and book in advance for €29 tickets (€39 for a bed) to Naples.

Cheers STB smile.gif 29 is a song

That site is indeed a maze of information cul-de-sacs.

That Michelangelo Express is one slow train. Great views but she goes damn slow over those mountains. I have been on that train too many times. unsure.gif
