Top tip for cross-topic quoting

Where did that TT quote come from?

Toytown Germany > Discussion forum > Themes > Metachat
Editor Bob
From the looks of the current TT post of the month topic it seems that a few people don't know how to make full use of the forum quote facility. Quoting within a topic is simple enough and most have the hang of doing it. But quoting between two topics, how do you do that then? Well, it requires a bit of cunning clicking on secret buttons and such, but it's not too complicated. Here's how...

*) Find the post which you want to quote.

*) Click the quote button which appears to the bottom right of that post. The button looks like this:

*) On clicking it the button will turn red (provided you have javascript enabled on your browser) like this:

*) Then find the other topic, the one you want to post to. Click one of the reply buttons (doesn't matter which):

*) You're then presented with a textbox containing the code for quoting. Look at this and delete any excess text - i.e. text which isn't relevant to the bit you wanna quote. Don't delete any of the codey bits, but the more plain text you delete the better, quotes should be as concise as possible.

*) Once your quote text is ready, add your own message beneath and the click "Post" button, and Bob's your uncle. A cross-topic quote including the original poster's name and post date.

Note that the quoted text also contains snap the magic trackback button. Snapback is a little red arrow in the bottom far-right. Click the arrow and you're sent back to the original post. Thus you don't necessarily need to write, "I took the above quote from such-and-such topic". Sure, you can post that if you like, but it's redundant because the crosslink is already there. The snapback button looks like this:

Here's a screenshot of a crosstopic quote with the snapback button highlighted:

It also works for multiple posts, thusly:

1) Find the post which you want to quote.

2) Click the quote button which appears to the bottom right of that post.

3) On clicking it the button will turn red (provided you have javascript enabled on your browser).

4) Find the next post u want to quote and repeat steps 2 and 3. And so on...

5) Then find the other topic, the one you want to post to. Click on one of the reply buttons and Bob is still ur uncle

quick question, may have just been something with my browser.
while about to post something today, I had clicked quote on two posts, same thread, and then clicked reply. Only one showed up (don't know why), and so I just added in the quote code and copy pasted the other quote in. Posted it, and went on about my day. Later on, when responding to someone else, in a different section of TT, I clicked on quote, went to reply, and bam, there was the quote that went missing earlier. Could easily be something screwy with my browser, but has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks Uncle Bob! Believe it or not, at one time, this was a favorite expression of my kids, "Uncle Bob!"

Here's a questions/suggestion: After learning a bit of German, my ability to spell English words properly has gone to hell. Any chance of having a handy spell check button to quickly check the stuff I type before posting? huh.gif
