After the success of Picasa and Google Maps, Google have now released another new product called Google Earth :
http://earth.google.com/index.htmlIt's a globe of Earth which you can zoom in on from space right down to individual building level, to satellite images. 3D graphics are also available for major cities, i.e. you can look at NYC in 3D and change the camera view to whatever you wish.
You can also use it for driving directions, or finding schools, restaurants, parks and hotels.
However, because it's only beta, there's a limit to the number of downloads. At the moment you get the message:
QUOTE
Google Earth downloads temporarily delayed
Thanks for your interest in Google Earth, but we're sorry we can't offer you a download right now. As you know, Google Earth is in beta, and we're still building out our ability to take on new users. We're making good progress, and expect to be able to accept new downloads shortly, so we recommend you check back daily at earth.google.com. We hope to be able to welcome you and other new planet surfers soon.
We appreciate your patience,
The Google Earth Team
It was fine just yesterday though

It's a really fun map of the world to use, and you can mark your house and wherever you like with markers.

I also love
this site. Here you can find the up to date position of any satellite of your choice, the current position of the ISS or of Hubble.

it would be great if someone could "placemark" all of the u-bahn and s-bahn stops on the map, and post the .kmz file here on TT...
maybe the TT admins could also "placemark" all of the top bars, and meeting points, especially since the "layers" function does not seem to work (outside highlighting the road names here in munich)...
would make things a hell of a lot easier for newbies like myself to get around...

S-bahn - so far only the S7 ... and U-bahn only the U6 but it's a start.
The KMZ file attachments don't show up. PM if you want them.

Thanks Marty - that rocks.
@dmgk: disagree. It's the user interface that makes Google Earth special as well as the images.

If you go to
http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/ubbthreads.php/Cat/0 you can find all sorts of interesting things for google earth.
I've got realtime traffic reports for Germany, the weather, and a few interesting landmarks.
Plus I was tracking the ISS and the Shuttle as it came in to land the other day.
It's great! (Not found a practical use for it yet, but it's still great

I dunno if many people are playing about with Google Earth, but if you are, I've found that when marking your own objects in Google Earth, the icons can go all wrong and get totally mixed up. Alot.
Can happen alot when you are shifting folders about, and fiddling with other kml/kmz files you might have downloaded. I've been fiddling about manually with an XML editor in the kml file to get rid of this problem, but it seems to derive from STYLE tag references getting screwed up, normally caused by the fact that entire folders can have a shared icon style.
Can seemingly also result in your cache getting messed up, and google earth crashing.

So Don, this software ain't so toll then?

Ooh, no, quote the opposite. The fact that one can fiddle about with the kml files is great. You get bugs in every bit of software under the sun, but it only ever bothers me if it really stops me sorting the shit out that I want to sort out. These kml files are really simple, and open up alot more possibilites than the GUI alone will give you.

Has anyone tried to find Mount Everest lately? Or Tibet for that matter? I think China took Google Earth to court or something. Bizzarro!

Do you have an older version or a newer version? On my old version it looks fine too and the resolution is high, but someone at work dl'ed a new version yesterday and Tibet was gone and Everest is in Chinese on the close up and the resolution is a lot less.

Apparently this the roof of Yarm School in Stockton on Tees. Some ex-students broke in on a weekend and painted a giant knob on the roof of the school. Seems it wasn't noticed until someone saw it on Google Earth. It has since been removed. The knob, not the roof.

I just cranked up Google Earth in order to zoom in on the centre of Freising, and noticed that the pictures are new. This is good news - except that the muppets took photos when there were clouds in the sky, thus obliterating the centre of town. Do I have to wait another three years until they take new photos before I can use Google Earth again, or is there a way of accessing the old photos? Anyone know of any other sources of aerial photographs? I know that the
Bayerische Landvermessungsamt have them, but they only show a small section at a time.

You should probably write them an email about it. If they are aware of such a thing, maybe they would change it back to the old version..

Most of Google's Mapping/updating is automatic. Kick'em an email and see if they can get better pix.

I often suggest Microsoft's
Live Maps as an alternative to Google as they use different imagery, but in this case it seems
their Freising pictures are pretty low resolution.

Jun 12 2007, 4:12 pm
OK, so I just cranked up Google Earth and Freising is there again in its full glory. They seem to have used the images they had before, so although the resolution isn't as high as other areas near by, at least you can actually see the town!

Hi out there,
the Freising airphoto is totally messed up.
Someone manually highlighted the Munich Airport, the surrounding area is underexposed and cant really be viewed in acceptable quali. A bunch of clouds also cover parts of Fresing centre. How is this highlightinng made and how is access gained?
Best regards, rixxo

It's a mess alright. They had reverted back to older, cloud-free photos, but now the clouds are back, which is of no use to anyone. I'll email them AGAIN.
here`s a little easter egg for Google earth - the newest version:
press Ctrl+Alt+A and you go into Flight simulator Mode - its a bit trick to control but great fun!
