It may look bad down there, but how bad is it really?

What we need is a more advanced form of karma grading. A number that will reflect a member's karma on an absolute basis rather than merely providing us with a really large or small positive or negative number.

For instance, somone like Jimbo, currently at the top of the list with a + 31 Karma count has +42 and -11. Under a new system, his rating would be 3.8 - a pretty good score. But Gen, currently in 15th with +14 and -2, would have a score of 7...

On the other end, someone with a score of, say, +5 and -51 (.09 new system) would obviously be in much worse shape than someone like IPJ whose score would be a relatively good .42!

Of course there are millions of possible permutations for new systems and I suggest we start looking for one that better reflects the realities of today's Toytown!

I've opted out as I feel the whole system has been undermined by the socialist members of this board, who feel that 'Karma distribution' is the only way to go. As a capitalist Karma-erer I have therefore voted with my feet and left the building.

there is no way on this planet or any interplanet that janet or should i say interplanetjanet deserves a negative 104 karma when other people (no names no pack drill) write utter drivel of posts and are still in positive territory. So any one who gives a damn about well thought out posts should give some +ive!

I personally think that once the whole karma system has been set up in the final configuration, the whole system should be reset. C'mon. I know there are a few people who really dislike me, but enough to give me -104 now that we can't just dole it out indefinitely? I doubt it.

I stopped playing once the new system was in place. So whatever I have now is probably true. Infact I ended up giving myself -6 due to the weird system.

On a serious note I'm afraid that some people take the karma thing a bit too seriously - I'd rather it was removed if people are going to either 1. take too much pride in +'ive Karma or worse still 2. take it personally or start suspecting conspiracy theories when they're awarded -'ive karma.

Having said that I've been watching it closely this last couple of days, and if you do take it seriously and want to get +'ve karma, it does discourage you from posting anything that might offend, or anything that challenges somebody else's point of view. Whether that's a good thing or not is open to debate, but suffice to say that in the few seconds between me posting a slightly sarcastic comment, and me then 'opting out' I received -'ve karma from somebody.

I say scrap it.

I dont mind whatever system he uses, as long as he publishes the code for it so we know how it works. I was really scared to use it a while back when I ended up triggering the tactical voting feature which gave me - karma! You cant have such a feature unless you explain it to users!

I think if people are going to take their karma rating on here seriously then they should opt out. It is a bit of fun. I personally enjoyed watching my karma fall like a stone when I made the rather nasty comments about Victoria Wood the other day.

I would like to see everybody so that I could witness the climb of those at the bottom. I am not obsessed with this karma thing but it does add some entertainment value to the forum.

Only the long-time users (sounds like a smack thing doesn't it) have sufficient weighting to keep themselves so gorgeous and loved and popular on a daily basis.

It would probably be more accurate if long time members couldn't give karma at all period.
It would also be more accurate if it got reset every Monday morn at say 3:30am. Those long time users using their special powers would get tired of taking the piss on someone if they had to do it every Monday morning anew. Then ol' eBob could see who was abusing the system fairly quickly and ban their karma giving powers by taking their magic wand away from them.

Did you know that at the start of the karma set up... I actually gave you and eurovol about -30 karma before things became stable. Just because I could?!?!?!

Surely I deserve some negative karma for that???

Oh, and I also voted for myself constantly, and when someone else got anywhere near me, I would find their posts and give negative karma to them.
