Roots is still at the top of the wheel but I'm sinking. Can't even figure out why I'm so high on the list. I don't even own a karma.
Is it just me not seeing something, or does anyone else have a problem w/ giving karma and it not showing up in the tally? I sent some a couple of min ago (first time in the last couple hours that I've sent any), yet the karma didn't show up... hell, the person's alias hasn't even shown up on the list yet... I had something like this happen earlier too, and it took a while before the person's alias showed up (ca. 30min... but I wasn't exactly checking every 5 seconds).
ok, I just wanted to use bling in a post...

parnell: you nailed it with "pettiness".
This feature is crap. It looks like a bad implementation of moderation/ratings found in Scoop or Slash code (kuro5hin.com/slashdot.org) but without any accountability or display of who/what/why. You can mod yourself up/down, there doesn't appear to any audit trail, it can be easily gamed with a very simple script, and it's being abused by at least a few people based on the guidelines listed on the
karma ratings page.
I spent way too much time working on a post yesterday about
old German measures and watched as one person hit a + and three a - inside 10 minutes. That's a load of shit, as is IPJ's, OG's and that of the majority of the people in the red zone.
The karma assignment as implemented is nothing but a "popularity vote based on the votes of the petty". It could be a useful tool in filtering crap posters. Instead it's being used and abused by a few miscreants who actually think the rest of us don't see what they're doing and that we really give a shit.
It could possibly be useful if placed on threads or comments, but as implemented on users overall, serves no purpose whatsoever beyond the furtherance of pettiness.
Please turn it off.
woof.

I think it's a cute touch by the mods, as long as you don't take it seriously. It's a nice feeling to read something and send them happy vibes, or read a troll post and knock one off.
I wouldn't worry about the placings too much though - it's affected by too many things to take very seriously and it will probably get abused a bit, especially to start with.

May 19 2005, 9:23 am
I've been on this site quite a while ... not as long as Kza albeit ... believe me if people were as open on the site about their pettiness as they are in private then there'd be a lot less rumour mongering and lie spreading on TT. I can't get upset with the karma, the number of folks ignoring me etc. etc. - as Timmeh (I think it wuz) said - it's the ultimate in ownage - people can't meet you face to face in real life or even in virtual life on the board and bring their shit to your face so they'll stick you when you can't see em.
Still it's a beautiful day.
Yeti
May 19 2005, 9:23 am
I've never felt like knocking one off after reading a troll post but there you go. Different strokes for different folks.
In its current simplistic form its pretty useless, but it could be combined with a per-post scoring system so users can tag each post as a troll, or interesting or funny or whatever. And a per user karma should only used internally to support that.
Marshbot
May 19 2005, 9:26 am

If someone is making trolling posts then it's not going to put them off if people send them bad "Karma". In fact it would serve as a vindication of what they are doing. Better would be to find out where they live and go round and break their fingers. All in good spirit of course.

@Keydeck
Yeah but the idea would be that people who are allergic to troll posts can possibly set up a filter or sort them out.
Im thinking of how slashdot does it really. And I think thats a good moderation system if the members of the site think such a thing is needed.
But considering there arent that many totally offensive or annoying posts the current system seems to work very well. (I mean the current system of having a few moderators, not the karma system thats just a silly novelty)

I don't follow that, and I'm rather familiar with the rumour-spreading and outright lies being told by certain people about others in meatspace.

You'll find discussions about that everywhere in the invision development section. The problem is that the Invision developers don't see it or don't care. Rating posts on a thread would be useful and having those ratings affect users behind the scenes could also be put to use (though it's not necessary here since this place hasn't yet been discovered by the crapflooders), but this? Shite, for the reasons I enumerated above.

I apparently used up my allotment of Karma in a 24 hour period. I had no strategy really but was giving them out willy nilly. Im not even sure who I gave what to and why. A few exceptions though:
1. I did give bad karma to 1 or 2 people by accident. Jittery trigger fingers from too much excitement and coffee so I had to even it out with a good karma.
2. I also sent good karma to some people because they had to much bad karma or no karma at all.
3. I threw in some negatives around and where I really went wrong, is that I think I kind of blew my wad on Islander. Which I don't feel to bad about since I've mocked him publicly and privately. Marcus Blair too, though I guess by Kza's point that just might be petty but I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of feeding his troll.
I would definitely love a troll button. We can even make a big do out of it...a showdown for the TT Troll Title. I guess that could get very, very ugly. So scratch that. I do agree with Marshbot that some trolls can be quite entertaining.
/me love karma long time.

I reckon Kza's onto something.
If it was possible, it would be great to have it per post. At the moment it's a bit like a popularity contest and doesn't really count for much - but if people could tag a particular post for worthiness that'd be entertaining.
Not that if someone disagree's or whatever they shouldn't post their thoughts on the thread as well - but just as a funny aside to get a picture of what TT in general thinks of a comment. Other than that, I think it should be taken with a grain of salt.

It's only a popularity contest if you treat it like one. I honestly think it's interesting why people get rated certain ways. I made the decision to rate people on their subsequent posts. That is, the ones I bother to read and strike me as either good or stupid (in a non-funny way). I've been giving a bit out here and there, but only one something strikes me, not just because it's there.
I figure it'll settle down in a few days.

I don't think it means anything Parnell.
There's some other folk like that too who I think always post with clever, witty or informative replies (or all of the above) and they've attracted lots of negatives or are in the red. Can't work it out myself.
