you can also give yourself karma, that should be blocked
dr warner
i am at number 130 with -8 and gosh darn proud. don't think i can ever catch up to ipj though...girl!
interplanetjanet
Nobody's taking my hot spot! I'll bad karma myself to keep it!
Marshbot
This karma points thing must be per IP address or something? I share a computer with another TT'er and sometimes I can't dish out lovin to people for a while after logging in; it seems to think I've already given out some karma. ??
Jeeves
More likely to be a cookie. Try deleting a couple (before you log in) wink.gif

Edit: Nah forget that. It was worth a try...
dr warner
marshy, is this fellow tter the guy who crushes tui cans?
eurovol
Timmeh, welcome to the red zone. wink.gif
Timmeh
There be some good folk in the red zone, don't mind hanging here one bit.

But is real life isn't that the way it is: we make our bed everyday that we have to sleep in. Nice beds, not so nice beds. Let us pat ourselves on the back, and wear haircoats from time to time.

Error. No karma was sent!

I'm all out of Karma, I so lost without it...
Marshbot
Mmm, something's funky with the karma buttons. I tried to send you some love eurovol but I'm not sure if it worked, weird numbers n'stuff coming up.

Check the TT grand karmic scale! We're still giving mainly negative karmic juices to each other. -105. Where's all the good vibes hiding?

I appear to be collecting all the bad karma. Perhaps if I jump ship Toytown will be saved.

No, no, no IPJ. Don't go. I would really miss you. (I AM being serious). I'm really looking forwards to meeting you.
dr warner
no one wants to send ipj good karma but we're willing to send her some love. interesting. i think really she is quite touched by her rating. and as for the marshy and ipj bitch fight, i'm still loving it, bring it on!
parnell
@ dr w.
I've sent her some positive shit ... she should rejoice in the pettiness of the board.
Yeti
Roots is still at the top of the wheel but I'm sinking. Can't even figure out why I'm so high on the list. I don't even own a karma.
jip
Is it just me not seeing something, or does anyone else have a problem w/ giving karma and it not showing up in the tally? I sent some a couple of min ago (first time in the last couple hours that I've sent any), yet the karma didn't show up... hell, the person's alias hasn't even shown up on the list yet... I had something like this happen earlier too, and it took a while before the person's alias showed up (ca. 30min... but I wasn't exactly checking every 5 seconds).

ok, I just wanted to use bling in a post...

roots
Somebody is confusing Karma with Korma otherwise I have no business being there really. That after IW told me how he was trying to bring me down all day yesterday. smile.gif

tongue.gif I almost feel obliged to play now. I've only had two proper tangles with her that I know of, but apparently I have made quite an impression. Yippee skippee!
We'll have to see though, Dr... I wouldn't want to let you down now, and I know it makes you happy in your special place.. but we'll see.
BadDoggie
parnell: you nailed it with "pettiness".

This feature is crap. It looks like a bad implementation of moderation/ratings found in Scoop or Slash code (kuro5hin.com/slashdot.org) but without any accountability or display of who/what/why. You can mod yourself up/down, there doesn't appear to any audit trail, it can be easily gamed with a very simple script, and it's being abused by at least a few people based on the guidelines listed on the karma ratings page.

I spent way too much time working on a post yesterday about old German measures and watched as one person hit a + and three a - inside 10 minutes. That's a load of shit, as is IPJ's, OG's and that of the majority of the people in the red zone.

The karma assignment as implemented is nothing but a "popularity vote based on the votes of the petty". It could be a useful tool in filtering crap posters. Instead it's being used and abused by a few miscreants who actually think the rest of us don't see what they're doing and that we really give a shit.

It could possibly be useful if placed on threads or comments, but as implemented on users overall, serves no purpose whatsoever beyond the furtherance of pettiness.

Please turn it off.

woof.
Kza
+ve karma for you bad doggie, its what I have been saying all along tongue.gif

i get an javascript error everytime I try to distribute karma. I am currently at -4 (+1 / -5) smile.gif
Marshbot
I think it's a cute touch by the mods, as long as you don't take it seriously. It's a nice feeling to read something and send them happy vibes, or read a troll post and knock one off.
I wouldn't worry about the placings too much though - it's affected by too many things to take very seriously and it will probably get abused a bit, especially to start with.
parnell
I've been on this site quite a while ... not as long as Kza albeit ... believe me if people were as open on the site about their pettiness as they are in private then there'd be a lot less rumour mongering and lie spreading on TT. I can't get upset with the karma, the number of folks ignoring me etc. etc. - as Timmeh (I think it wuz) said - it's the ultimate in ownage - people can't meet you face to face in real life or even in virtual life on the board and bring their shit to your face so they'll stick you when you can't see em.
Still it's a beautiful day.
Yeti
I've never felt like knocking one off after reading a troll post but there you go. Different strokes for different folks.
Kza
In its current simplistic form its pretty useless, but it could be combined with a per-post scoring system so users can tag each post as a troll, or interesting or funny or whatever. And a per user karma should only used internally to support that.
Marshbot
That's true actually Yeti, I dislike troll posts cos I'm supposed to - but in reality some of them are really very good. (and some really not).

If someone is making trolling posts then it's not going to put them off if people send them bad "Karma". In fact it would serve as a vindication of what they are doing. Better would be to find out where they live and go round and break their fingers. All in good spirit of course.
eurovol
Hey, I like the fact that I have won the most karma votes for two days running! Good or bad, its better than none. cool.gif
PES
Your Karma ran over my dogma.
Yeti
Karmageddon !
Kza
@Keydeck

Yeah but the idea would be that people who are allergic to troll posts can possibly set up a filter or sort them out.

Im thinking of how slashdot does it really. And I think thats a good moderation system if the members of the site think such a thing is needed.

But considering there arent that many totally offensive or annoying posts the current system seems to work very well. (I mean the current system of having a few moderators, not the karma system thats just a silly novelty)

I don't follow that, and I'm rather familiar with the rumour-spreading and outright lies being told by certain people about others in meatspace.

You'll find discussions about that everywhere in the invision development section. The problem is that the Invision developers don't see it or don't care. Rating posts on a thread would be useful and having those ratings affect users behind the scenes could also be put to use (though it's not necessary here since this place hasn't yet been discovered by the crapflooders), but this? Shite, for the reasons I enumerated above.

Exactly.

Maybe the activation of karma is EB's way of saying:

I apparently used up my allotment of Karma in a 24 hour period. I had no strategy really but was giving them out willy nilly. Im not even sure who I gave what to and why. A few exceptions though:

1. I did give bad karma to 1 or 2 people by accident. Jittery trigger fingers from too much excitement and coffee so I had to even it out with a good karma.
2. I also sent good karma to some people because they had to much bad karma or no karma at all.
3. I threw in some negatives around and where I really went wrong, is that I think I kind of blew my wad on Islander. Which I don't feel to bad about since I've mocked him publicly and privately. Marcus Blair too, though I guess by Kza's point that just might be petty but I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of feeding his troll.

I would definitely love a troll button. We can even make a big do out of it...a showdown for the TT Troll Title. I guess that could get very, very ugly. So scratch that. I do agree with Marshbot that some trolls can be quite entertaining.

/me love karma long time.
Marshbot
I reckon Kza's onto something.
If it was possible, it would be great to have it per post. At the moment it's a bit like a popularity contest and doesn't really count for much - but if people could tag a particular post for worthiness that'd be entertaining.
Not that if someone disagree's or whatever they shouldn't post their thoughts on the thread as well - but just as a funny aside to get a picture of what TT in general thinks of a comment. Other than that, I think it should be taken with a grain of salt.
roots
Holy tamali, my karma is going down the tubes sad.gif
Showem
It's only a popularity contest if you treat it like one. I honestly think it's interesting why people get rated certain ways. I made the decision to rate people on their subsequent posts. That is, the ones I bother to read and strike me as either good or stupid (in a non-funny way). I've been giving a bit out here and there, but only one something strikes me, not just because it's there.

I figure it'll settle down in a few days.

BTW Bad Doggie, I +karmed you for the liter posts. I thought it was informative.
dr warner
who the fuck keeps messing with my karma? I am now at -2, this morning i was like -13! I am trying to catch up (down?) to ipj. it's that fucking thread about my lack of luck with the ladies that has done it, i was looking for sympathy not humour.

minus me please!!!
parnell
I've got a question which no-one is gonna answer ... how come Grinner attracts such negative karma? ... he hardly ever posts ... does not (unlike me) claim ownage and is a pretty pleasant person (also unlike me)
Marshbot
I don't think it means anything Parnell.
There's some other folk like that too who I think always post with clever, witty or informative replies (or all of the above) and they've attracted lots of negatives or are in the red. Can't work it out myself.
That's why I'd love to see which posts they got their plus/minus's for... I guess the people they've rubbed the wrong way have the clickiest fingers?
Kza
Its good you can only give 20 points in a day now too. Well it makes the karma system slightly less rediculous.
dr warner
and you can't do yourself

Nope ... u still can
