Now Iron Mike has finally called it quits.

1) Who was the best career boxer?

2.) Best boxer on any one day?

I'll start.

1.) Muhammad Ali

2.) Tyson (in his youth he was unstoppable; could have beaten a young Ali).

(I wouldn't start a bar fight with Sonny Liston either huh.gif )

big daddy and giant haystacks tag team. you wouldn't want to face those lads in the ring.
OhFFS
1. If you mean on ability then by Jack Johnson, according to many (even Ali acknowledged him as having been a better boxer). Heavyweight, anyway, but there are or were some truly great fighters in all of the divisions - Joe Gans, Willie Pep, ... the list is endless. If you mean on record then Carlos Monzon has to be mentioned, along with Rocky Marciano - both retired undefeated as champion, with Monzon going 81 bouts undefeated (his 3 losses came early in his career).

2. Not sure what you mean by this. Someone that won or did incredibly well in one particular fight but the rest of his career didn't live up to it? I'm trying to remember the name of the British boxer who faced, I think, Joe Louis, and gave him the runaround but eventually lost. Apparently he had been so dazed by a Louis punch that he spent the next few rounds on autopilot and he boxed the great one stupid, then he came around and tried to knock Louis out (which is where he came unstuck). Freddie Mills?

Former boxer Tyson arrested on DUI, cocaine charges

QUOTE
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (Reuters) - Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson was arrested in Arizona on Friday and charged with driving under the influence of drugs and possession of cocaine, police said.

Tyson was arrested in Scottsdale, 10 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona, after his black BMW nearly collided with a sheriff's vehicle, according to court documents.

1. Muhammed Ali, if by best "career boxer" you mean had the most notable career. Ali is a recognized legend, even to people who dont know jack about boxing. Speaking of Jack, I'd give an equal nod to Jack Johnson for the fascinating history.

2. Im not that up on all modern boxers and I definitely dont know any non-American ones but I'd probably pick Jack Johnson in a Fantasy match any day. Probably one of the best skilled boxers of all time, imho.

Edit: agreed with Eurovol, Rocky Balboa is tops, duh. laugh.gif
Silly Point
Heavyweight gets all the press, but middleweight in the 80's was a golden era.

1) Marvin Hagler - a complete boxer - only lost 2 fights and one of those a dodgy points decision against Sugar Ray Leonard

2) Thomas 'Hit Man' Hearns. Anyone who could floor both Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard is seriously frightening.
Panama
I would add Roberto Duran to the great-boxers list as well. Although Hearns was a great one as well. There are always legends as Ali who cannot go unmentioned.

Big Daddy (Shirley Crabtree) now dead, lived 5 KM from my parents and was an arrogant, look-at-me type. He wasnt liked by many people locally. His brother was OK though.
His nephew Earl Crabtree is a professional Rugby League player for Huddersfield and has played for England U21s

Knew also Adam Fogerty who was a British Boxer who held a couple of British and European titles before switching to Rugby League with Halifax and St.Helens. He is now a film star and has appeared in Lock Stock and two Smoking Barrels amongst other films.

Ali or Tyson although tough to really know. Tyson could punch but had problems taking a punch and lost the plot as well. Ali was never like that and so its highly respected by most
