"in München" magazine

is it useless, or what?

Toytown Germany > Discussion forum > South Germany > Munich > Life in Munich
Chicago
so I picked up a copy of "in München" wanting to find out what is going on in town. but the darn this is so terribly organised, that I still have no idea what is going on.

the thing is, the mag is organised BY DAY mad.gif - so if you know which day you want to go out, it lists what is happening ON THAT DAY. and then, the detailed info for an event is given in the first listing of it, so then you have to search thru all the previous days to find the detailed info!

the damn thing reminds me of the "soviet phonebook" - which listed all telephone numbers by the day it was connected. totally useless, but easy to put together.

but if you want to plan your social calendar according to what you want to do, then plan the days accordingly (i.e. Hey, so and so is playing on X day!!! I will be sure to mark the day in my calendar!) , then just forget it. you would have to read the goings on of every single day!!!

why can't they have a listinging BY EVENT??? say, a list of bands that will play in Munich during the next month, listed by band name. or a list of film reviews, listed by film title (not by day shown!!!).

am I the only one frustrated by this?

is there another magazine that actually provides the info in a readable manner?

They do have those things as well. The concerts are listed towards the back and have it organised by date and only the concerts. In the front, they have a films section; a theater section; and other diversions section; plus lately they have Open Air events and BUGA events. Then you have the day by day events. Personally I think this is great, as it has minimal advertisements with maximal information , organised well and best of all...FREE!

You can also use their webpage (which I agree is not the best organised), to serach by concerts rather than dates In münchen

Yeah, I'm with brokenM, I think it's a great magazine, especially like the price of free.
Chicago
yea, I like the FREE part. but the res is still worthless. the concert listings are still ordered BY DAY! or are private adds PER VENUE.

let me show you an example of what it should look like (I'm refering to the lower grouping "Early Warings" *not* the "New" or "Updated" groups)
http://www.chicagoreader.com/music/early.html

notice: listed by ARTIST - regardless of date of performance, venue, name of sponsor, star sign, or tarot card...

now that is a helpful list biggrin.gif

T o each their own, but to me it is irrelevant whether it is alphabetical or by date. As it takes me only a minute to read through all of the upcoming bands for the next few months. If I already knew the bands that were playing and I only wanted to know the date, then I would quickly type it in to a ticket seller.

I really do not see the advantage for it being alphabetised and I see more of an advantage when it is listed by date.
Chicago
as a case in point:

Q: "Is Wilco coming to town?"
possible answer 1: "Let me check the alphabetical list, in the part with Ws..." (2 seconds later) "No."

possible answer 2: "Let me search thru every single day..." (20 minutes later) "I'm sorry, who were you looking for?"

or another example:
Q: "What films are in the Münich FilmFest?"
in München's answer: "here is the list of the films that will be shown on each day." (no quick list of the films in the fest!)

and I'm happy for those people that have enough time on their hands to search thru the entire thing for such details. good for you.
Chicago
again: are there any good alternatives to "in München"?

I personally like the organisation better as it is:

What concerts will be this weekend? Or the weekend that my friends are coming?

Ahh, I never heard of this group, but they give a short description, and they sound perfect.

Or I scan all of the upcoming shows, and see bands that I had no idea that were playing here in Munich.

Rarely do I know that a band is coming when I don't know the date, as I have already checked online. However, reading the lists organised by date, I can see all the bands in an organisation which makes much more sense than how they would fit alphabetically.

I do not disagree with you that sometimes it might be nice to know the bands that are upcoming as they are listed alphabetically,

However, I would put that after the importance of listing the bands in chronological order as In München does. Therefore it makes the most sense to me for a current magazine of events to list these events chronologically.

Have you tried their website:
http://www.in-muenchen.de/
They at least list cinema separately.
Sin
Great free magazine - even got our next gig in there before anybody else. What's the problem?
Chicago
for those who (like me) prefer an alphabetical listing of up-comming events, this is possible on:

http://www.eventim.de

From the home page, select "Concerts" -> (music type).
This will give a list of events BY EVENT NAME for ALL of Germany. I haven't seen how to get this same sort order for Munich only. But still I find this better than that local publication.
Showem
Good to know Chicago.

But I still like In for days like today when I don't know what I should do this evening.
