I do believe there is an English version...Thanks for you help, though...

Do any on the dedicated or PDA version provide TMC (traffic) information? TMC data is transmitted through the FM radio station sub-frequencies.
YorkshireLad6
Some do (TomTom supports it for example), but you need an add-on tuner. Others get similar traffic detail via GPRS

@YL6
GPS??? Are you sure?? GPS is a one way communication Satt. Navigation system It just feeds Lat/Lon coords into the recievers.. not traffic data..

The 2 ways of getting TMC (Traffic data) into a nav programs are:

1. With the reciever mentioned by YL6 above which pulls the info off the FM/AM radio ways.
2. Via handy (Dial-Up internet) requests the info from the TMC server then disconnects. (Route 66 does this and for 9 EU countries) as long as you can get in internet connection it will work and can be configurged to do it at a set interval.

I know I must sound crazy, but I will pay the stupid amount asked by BMW and use their built in system.

I know all the arguments, but when I watch people show me "how easy" their system is - with strange things stuck on the windscreen and cables badly hidden leading to cigar lighters and GPS sensors...

I know the BMW iDrive system is awkward...

I know the BMW naviagation system is not as good as the Mercs (but I'm too young to drive a Merc )...

However it's just so much simpler to have it all built in and when you look at the difference on the lease (less the 400€ for the PDA version) it's about 6€ per month.

Worth it in my book.

Thanks for all the info though. As a result of it I went down to MediaMarkt fully clued up.

Further research show the following:
.
There are currently 10 public and 2 private RDS-TMC broadcasters in Germany.
All of them broadcast in the FM range (87.5-108MHz). And since RDS-TMC is a Standard all other EU countries also follow the same spec.

The following Countries Support this Spec. and offer RDS-TMC Data

Austria
Belgium
Czech Republic
Denmark
Finland
France
Germany
Italy
Spain
Norway
Sweden
Switzerland
Netherlands
UK
US (Country wide Via Sat. Radio - Certain areas via FM)

It is also planned in Portugal.
Ireland,Hungary and Luxemburg currently have no plans for deployment.

If you want to find out more info or how it work go HERE

There are also Private companies (1-2) that offer Pay-For-TMC info via
GPRS, which is not compatible with the RDS-TMC standard and requies a special
reciever and a monthly/yearly payment. This service is mainly in the UK.

Future deployments will see RDS-TMC data feeds move off the FM band and onto
Sat. Radio (also in EU), and DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast).

For those with Bluetooth devices which want to have a GPS/TMC reciever in one unit look HERE (Siemens) or HERE (Navigon)
More tea, Vicar?
I know all about the Timex Watch GPS system - best prices, use (running, cycling), getting items fixed/replaced (almost) for free.

I'm sad that way, but use my sadness "wenn du lust hast".

Yeah all well and good but who's gonna lend me one to play with?
