This copied from an email sent to me from home... anyone seen it before?
This sounds like a very easy and simple idea to help out if something does
happen to us.

I learned of this thanks to Bruce Madge on the LIS-Medical discussion list. I think this would be a fantastic idea to be initiated in other countries (US, Canada, Australia, etc.) as well. In fact, I emailed the local TV stations & NPR the following message with the hope that this could be publicized--you're welcome to copy it &/or forward this email:
Hello. There's a recent campaign launched in England by the Ambulance Trust PALS; the following info is quoted by permission. "The idea is that you store the word ICE in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted 'In Case of Emergency'. It's such a simple idea but could be really helpful in an emergency - it would save ambulance crews and hospital staff time and would ensure that a patient's loved one was contacted as soon as possible."

hmmm. But is it real? I'm pretty sure that in the UK it is the police that trace people's next of kin, and that hospitals are not allowed to release any information to non-family members: I would imagine a number marked "ICE" is not acceptable.
I followed the link and couldn't find anything about "ICE" - although perhaps my browser is playing up.

I've heard of this on another messageboard but the concluson seemed to be it was a bit OTT. You can probably find out the "next of kin" (even if its not "family" by looking at last 10 dialled numbers.

Unfortunately that's not true, especially if living abroad. Why would you call home (or next of kin) from a mobile. My last 20 calls where ALL business calls.
And when i lost my mobile once, the people that found it couldn't find an entry for 'mum & dad' cos i had it stored as P's (for parents), my brother is stored as a name, and in the end they called my grandma.
So an international standard like ICE (or whatever) i think is a fantastic idea, especially as most people in the world that have technology own a mobile, and it's probably the one thing after keys & wallet that people take with them everywhere.
Bring it on, i'll subscribe to that idea, especially as if the need arises, i probably won't be worrying about the cost of a call from my mobile to the uk. Hmm, perhaps i should think about having a local (munich) person as my Next of Kin.

I just checked my last 10 dialled numbers:
My Ex
My home number
2 of my closest friends, mobile and home numbers.
Another friend, mobile and home numbers.
My boss.
More reliable source of an illicit bottle of gin if I'm in the hospital.

i think this is a good idea as well, and have just addes an ICE - Notfall contact numbers to my mobile phone. I have added more than one number to the entry just in case the first person is unreachable.
I agree with KT. Many mobile phones are used for business (probably still the majority of them) and the chances of finding personal contact details in them are lower than in privately used phones.
Mind you, a simple card in your wallet (like a donar card) with such details would also be enough.
edit: just checked my last numbers:
anonymous TT member
a different anonymous TT member
a another different anonymous TT member
a work colleague
a team mate from touch
another team mate from touch
yet another team mate from touch
a work colleague
a friend
another friend
so no-one in my last ten numbers that are family or ICE contact people.

When I (last) dropped my phone in a taxi the driver phoned my husband the next day to tell him. How did he know? When hubby gave me the thing years ago, he put his number in as "Dave my husband" and the taxi driver had let his son-in-law (who spoke english, he remembered me speaking English) go through the phone for identifying bits of information. I got my phone back the next evening.

Sounds like a good idea. ICE though -- acronym is already taken in Germany. I suspect that "Emergency" would work in more languages. Not in German though, but yeah, if you're in Germany why not change the entry to read "Emergency - Notfall" like OG did? Luddite question - how long can the name in a cell phone be anyway?

I managed to get "ICE - Notfall - in Case of Emergency" into my phone, but i suppose it varies on the phone.

I'm also a bit intrigued by this entry. Does the writer believe that readers don't have a concept of what 'another country' is? and why are they suggesting particular countries at all? The bit in brackets seems totally unnecessary

Suggesting English speaking countries because as we have already established, ICE already means something, for example in Germany

Story Here. It's weird how the simplest ideas never occur to us, or do they?
99% of use carry a mobile most times, does anyone have such a number in their phone or those with kids, do you put such a number in their phones.

Following the post about the ICE number that is currently a hot topic in the UK, I'd like to mention that we are trying to introduce something similar here in Germany called IN - for Im Notfall.
I do a firefighting blog, and initial response within fire services has been very good so I do expect it to go viral and reach some sort of spread before long. We're also trying to go through the telcos to endorse this idea.
There's more info under

But if they are going to want to implement something like this world-wide and you have the entry as ICE in your phone and you are in Germany, it will not be much use if the Germans are looking for "IN" and vie versa... Someone needs to decide on an international standard! :}
Maybe all phone companies should start implementing a colour-coded button on all phones that everyone could use if a phone is found or next-of-kin is needed... then you do not have a language barrier...
Hmmm... 80s popstar Vanilla ICE must get fed-up of being called everytime his mates get pissed-up on a Saturday night and fall into the gutter...

Keep only the cards you actually use in a metal business card holder, put your keys in your left pocket, your money in your right with your phone (assuming you don't mind it getting scratched on the coin), your cards in your back pocket (metal card holder allows you to sit on them no problem

).
And Robert's your Father's brother!
