Very annoying, why do they do this?

I completely agree! In many other European countries, the original language is always left in place and subtitles are added - not just for films, but all TV. This is like free English education, which is why people from the Netherlands, Belgium and other countries where this is done have such better English than most Germans.

However, Germans dub everything into German and you can really see the difference in their attention spans when something is dubbed vs. subtitled...

Hmmm, in Spain everything is dubbed as well. And... well, I am not even going to get into Spaniard English speaking skills smile.gif The titles get changed in crazy manner at home as well - Top Gun as "Pasion y Gloria" - I mean, really?!

Now that I'm in America it is the "high schoolers" that drive me mad. On their mobiles, loud, chomping loudly on their snacks, each one trying to outdo and impress their little friends. The girls are worse, with loud, Laguna Beach style OMIGAWD!s every 5 seconds. I remember catching a midnite showing of Jackass when it came out, and there were actual cops inside the cinema - the highschoolers were that riled up. I avoid the teenyboppers at all costs.

Petite, actually I found that in bigger Spanish cities the offer of movie theaters showing movies in the original version with subtitles is quite good. There are several in Barcelona where I lived for a year, never once had to see a dubbed movie (thank God). In Barcelona the offer as far as that goes is much better than in Munich!
I see you're from Valencia, maybe things are a bit different there than in Barcelona because BCN is very international (though Valencia is also quite a big city), but I think most Spanish people don't take the chance of watching movies in English even if they could.

I went to Batman: Darkknight at the Sony Centre in Berlin last night. I had two (German) girls next to me, giggling and talking all the way through, apparently they thought that any scenes where there wasn't dialogue didn't warrant paying attention to.
About halfway through I turned to them and said 'was ist so lustig?', they just carried on giggling.
There are a lot of threads on TT that start with 'why do Germans do this', most of the time, these stereotypes are not true, but there are some which most definitely do apply.
Also the thing about Germans laughing at inappropriate moments is spot on, I will take an AK47 next time I go to the cinema.

My first, and hopefully last, experience at the German Cinema.

We went with the family to watch "High School Musical 3."
(Yeah, I guess I set myself up for that one..)

BUT, the point is, yes, its normal for children to talk during the movie.
These girls who were 12-13 and in my step-sons school class, were sitting in front of us and talking the ENTIRE time.

They actually happened to be sitting in front of my sister-in-law who IS German.
She told them to shut up, and they kept talking.
She threw popcorn at them, they turned around and snarled at her.

She said "The next thing that comes is my soda, so shut the hell up."

hahahaha.
They shut up!

German talking in the cinema or making inappropriate noises... yeah know that one. Seems to be that Germans do not know how to whisper... at least when it comes down to my other half. I will whisper to her about something in the movie and she will answer full volume.. she just don't geddit. Good job we have a baby now and we cannot go the cinema together for a while laugh.gif God... I hope she doesn't read this thread unsure.gif

I live in D'dorf and go to the cinema regularly - to see German films, films dubbed into German and films left in the original English version.

I have - like Malcolm in Munich - NEVER had a problem with people talking through a film. Generally, I find that the half hour of adverts and previews gives people enough time to finish their food and drink (I know I do).

After that, you can generally hear a pin drop in the quiet moments.

I've also lived in London and come from North Wales. Likewise, I cannot remember any problems in the cinemas there.

Maybe people should come to the cinema with me.

I've had similar experiences in the U.S., especially with action movies like Star Wars or from Pixar. People howling in the middle or chatting about this and that. Nevermind the text messaging between teenagers...

After a while I bought a large screen and HT PJ and watched movies at home from DVDs (Blockbuster/Netflix), with my dog on my lap. Much better!

I watched 007 yesterday and expect for one snide comment in the middle of the movie by the two girls beghind me, it was generally very quiet.
