Did you know that there's a huge piece of the Berlin Wall standing in Munich?

I didn't until I saw this picture:

It's on Königinstr, opposite the American consulate, where the English Gardens begin.

They have chunks of it in some school playgrounds too.

In the eastern part of berlin they have a memorial with the wall still standing... there are actually a few of these around berlin.. also in the streets, they show you where the wall used to stand...

there is an artist in Berlin that also makes little markers showing where people used to live that were killed... you will find these markers in front of the houses.. in the pavement...

I kicked a chunk out of it when I was travelling in 93 ... I have it in my house back home.

Was handy as well as my brothers kids are young and just learning about historical events such as this - which captured their interest recently - and it was good to be able to show them ...

I can top that! I collected my own chips off the wall witha pick ax, on the friday night after they opened it (yes, 1989, I know how old I am!).

The Germans I was with thought I was nuts at the time - they were really embarassed when I borrowed the pickax. But when we got back to Heidelberg two of them asked me for pieces after about a week.

You kicked a chunk out of a concrete wall? Must have been tough boots you were wearing.

Which has more often than not caused a lot of distress for the peolple living in the houses, one such family had bought a house years after the war, not knowing about the history, as a marker was placed in front of the house, the family continued to get abuse from the locals saying they had no right to live in that house, called them Nazi bast**** etc...

The son was constantly bullied in school, stones were thrown through the house window etc...

Back aboot 5 years ago I visited Berlin and chipped off a piece of the Wall for myself as well. I found a pick-ax behind one of the more run-down sections of the wall and managed to hack a piece the size of a golfball out. Took awhile though...It's extremely hard concrete/stone!! smile.gif

We have 3 chunks displayed in a display case full of other stuff like that(significant golf balls, trophies from skiing and judo, etc). Kind of interesting stuff.
