A bit off topic, but I thought it interesting that the germans have "Kindergarten" for a school for children and "Baumschule" for a place that grows trees. I know that we pilfered the Kindergarten, but it would seem more correct if it were "Kinderschule" and "Baumgarten"

hey Brokem

they dont teach children in kindergarten.. they socialize them... so in fact, kindergarten is appropriate... the kids dont start learning to read and write till they go to schule...which in Germany is age six... so my daugher will be extremely social and illiterate in German till six... (she is learning english and Spanish at home)

My reference was to the idioms used in the building of the two german words and seem to fit better if they were switched. I used the definitions found on www.dictionary.com for the below definitions, so I am surprised that you believe that your children would be better off being placed in a plot of land and cultivated. But as I wrote earlier, this is off topic and was only an interesting observation of the two german words. Good luck finding an appropriate school or garden for your children.

Teach: To impart knowledge or skill (socialising would be considered in this definition)

School: An institution for the instruction of children or people under college age. (This also seems to be more appropriate than garden for where you would send your children)

Garden: A plot of land used for the cultivation of flowers, vegetables, herbs, or fruit. (seems stange that you would believe this is more accurate of where you want to send your children)

The German language doesnt always make sense when translating ... look at gloves... who in the world would call their gloves a hand shoe in English...

I like the use of the word garden... you place things in a garden that you nurture and where they can grow in a protected environment... that is what a German kindergarten does... but you are right.. school would be more logical...
