Dallas defence sucks!! I'm relying on Edge to get me at least 14.5 points tonight. I'm not hopeful.

First... I realize that it is too late to adjust week 1 (where the cheese stands to benefit), BUT

Somewhere between post #172 and #197, our scoring system changed such that Special Teams no longer received 6 points for a TD. Inconsistently, the position is referred to as DST (Defense and Special Teams) and the Special Teams (as well as Team Defense) still receive 2 points for fumble recoveries. I did not notice this until the NE did not receive points for the 108 yard kick return.

Was this an oversight or an implemented suggestion?
If the former, may I suggest that we adjust the scoring at least for subsequent weeks? (discussion expected)

@Perdido - regarding our week 1 matchup, I am confident that Vernon Davis (TE/SFO) will make this detail irrelevant...

The position is supposed to be the defensive team only. I actually thought that DST stood for DefenSive Team.

It is not a change from last year. Last year, TD's from punt returns and kick-off's counted for nothing (unless you happened to own the individual scoring the TD).

I'll have to check about the fumble recovery situation when I get home (cannot access that part of the scoring table from work for whatever reason).

I'm not really in favour of making any changes at this stage for subsequent weeks. The scoring system was discussed on this thread and up for viewing from before we conducted the draft and I don't think - for the sake of consistency, that it should be changed once the season starts.

But the idea was that the scoring for the DST is limited only to the Defense as it has in previous years.

EDIT: Post #199 shows that it's only Defence - I took the special teams part out because it wasn't in there in past years. I didn't think to mention it because as far as I was concerned, I'd fucked up by having it in there in the first place, so just "corrected it". So I'm sorry if it caused confusion.

Although DST is clearly defined to include special teams (http://munich.football.sportsline.com/help/glossary), the customized scoring table (http://munich.football.sportsline.com/help/rules) was available prior to the draft. I checked Yahoo (prior years' FFL), and I agree that they refer to the position as DEF (read: no ST) so we are nearly consistent with last year's scoring sans discussed enhancements. (ST fumble recoveries cannot have that large of an impact, can they?)

I was under the mistaken impression that by drafting a DST, ST TDs woud receive points (like they do at ESPN.com). I think ze Germans have a word for this... "dummgelaufen"

I agree with you that making changes is less than optimal. Anyone else want to chime in?

Did it influence who you were going to draft as your defence though? Because those sort of touchdowns don't happen that often and would make up only a very small percentage of your overall points at the end of the season.

Of course, if we did change the scoring system now, then you'd be even more pissed off if your opponent next week gets 12 points that way - after you got none this week. It would be bound to happen too - Murphy's law...

Yes, I did draft that way. In full disclosure, I mistakenly drafted that way last year(s) as well. Most magazines that I have seen include both D and ST in their team rankings.

My intent is NOT to improve my week 1 stats, but to bring up what I thougt was an oversight. You are correct that whatever we do, it will bite me in the ass during the course of the season...

Best thing to do would be to start a poll to see how many are open for a scoring change. It seems a returned punt/kick off, fumble recovery returned, interception returned, should add points to the defense/special teams.

I have never thought of punt or kickoff return teams as part of the D. To me they are like specialized offensive units. I drafted on the D part and not the ST part. Of course, how often does the ST part actually score anything? To include the ST part, you would have to include return yards in the scoring system. Are we liable now for ST fumbles? If we are, then scores and return yards should count, but if we aren't then leave it as it.

I'd prefer not to do that.

ST can only score points in defence (as far as I can see). Getting a TD from a punt return is not a defensive action. Forcing a fumble is.

Thus it is only defensive players (whether regular defence or ST) that can score.

Does that make sense?

watched this game. It comes down to one important factor tartence newman being out. If you cant play man to man then the blitz package is nothing. It was hard to watch.

It wasn't the difference between a win and a loss for me this week -- my loss was due to the coaching blunder of leaving Plaxico on the bench.

We never gave points for punt and kick returns in the past. We also never got points for Special teams scoring (unless you owned the individual who did the scoring).

But this is precisely why the scoring was figured out prior to the draft and I gave everyone the chance to have their say. The scoring system was available for everyone to look at on the CBS site for over a month before the season started.

So - the scoring will not change this year. Next year we can revisit this.

For me, it's totally based on false assumptions due to being in multiple leagues. Multiple leagues and I still couldn't manage a single week 1 victory.

Well, the first round was a huge shoot out between most teams. Several receivers are knee deep in points and could possibly be seeing a 50+ 50+ game. Makes for good FFB, but but bad D.
