Can anyone recommend a good web hosting service. I bought a domain through yahoo but think their price for the web hosting service is a bit high (12 USD a month) so wondering if anyone has a cheaper option they can recommend. I really only want it to post pictures and info to for family and friends.

Thanks,

try http://www.westhost.com. I pay 6.99$ (per month) for a two year hosting contract. I have been with them for years and they are fine.

Hi

A website I help moderate is looking out for a new host. I don't know all the technical details myself but I hope what's below is sufficient:

Php4 (or 5)
Mysql 3.24 or above
Excess of 2GB of space, the more, the better
Currently spending $20 per month

Any of you IT bods recommend anywhere?

I highly recommend Hosting Unlimited.

Been with them for a number of years now and am very, very happy with the service.

I'm on the Elite package for £69.95 per year (~ $127).

2,000 MB of Unix Web Space
30 GB of Monthly Bandwidth
Unlimited POP3 E-mail Accounts
Unlimited MySQL Databases
Unlimited Subdomains
Microsoft FrontPage Extensions Installed
Advanced Site Stats
cPanel & Fantastico Auto-Installer

Check with your internet provider. We get spacing for free from them. I'm afraid I'm not sure how big it is, but it does the trick for us.

I said "F-that" to web hosting companies many years ago, and decided to Collocate a huge & powerfull server with a tier 1 provider.

The up side of the deal:

1. I get whatever hardware I want (And own it)
2. 24x7x365 Monitoring and reboots
3. All the HD Space/email addresses/software/etc I can ever need

All for 150 Eur or so a month
(Very cheap if you rent out space to others) cool.gif

One seem to be pretty good value. I think I'll be signing up with these chaps unless I come across any better deals within the next few days.

I use www.anhosting.com. Right now it's $5.95, and comes with 750 gig space, 7500 gig transfer per month and PHP, Perl, Python, GCC, Ruby on Rails (RoR). Frankly, I have no idea how they do it for this cost. They even let me SSH in, at which point I can install my own stuff on the box (not root though, only in my home directory).

Their support is pretty quick too.

I used to have my site hosted with Powweb and never had any complaints either!

@Hutcho
Cause they load 4-6 (Or more) customers off one physical server.
Hutcho
They probably load even more than that onto one. Still, it's like 4 euros a month, seems like it's a competitive business to be in.
