Life in Feldkirchen

What it's like to live and work there

Assuming the paperwork keeps moving forward I will be working for Intel in Feldkirchen by the end of the summer. My wife and I are trying to narrow down our living locations. There is the catch that I will need to travel once or twice a month so fairly easy access to the airport would be highly useful.

We have a 2 year old son, we are not into the night life at this age but we still like a good place to eat from time to tome. By doing our own research we have an eye on Erding. It looks like it is about 20min by train to the Office any yet not that far from the airport. Though it is far from Munich. If anyone has lived or knows much about Erding I could use some first hand accounts.

Our other 2 thougts where Markt Schwaben, or just biting the bullet and going with the city life in Munich proper. Maybe Bogenhausen.

Does anyone have any thoughts on these places and raising a child? Or is there any location I may have overlooked?

Thanks everyone!

Have you thought about living in Feldkirchen? It is growing quite quickly and very child-friendly. I'm living here raising my son who will be 3 in August. It's 20mins straight s-bahn to the centre and also in the inner circle so you don't have to pay more for tickets to the centre.
The airport takes around 45mins by train. Really easy with only one quick change. I take this journey regularly with my son.
Hope this is of some use!

and bus connections on the weekend/holidays from Erding to the Airport are almost non-existant...

As for the train tickets, get a green card for the entire network for 50 Eur a month.
If you can get your company to let you come in by 0930 you'll be doing great...

There really isn't to much in Markt Schwaben... Erding is the place to be..
Downtown costs way to much $$$ (Esp. Bogenhausen) and can seem a bit to noisy, crowded and dirty..

I live across the road from Intel in Feldkirchen and its a really nice place to live. There is a nursery, school, gymn, beer garden, lake, a few restaurants and a supermarket. Easy access to central Munich. Everything you need really:)

I live in Bogenhausen, and love it... great beergartens, playgrounds, most of co workers live in the area with their kids, and love it too. Plus good connections to Ubahn, Sbahn (to the airport- Englschalkinerstr or Daglfing) and bus and streetcar. I live closer to Arabellapark. Has everything I need.

plus a good pool nearby.

I like the what I am hearing about Feldkirchen and I spent some time focusing on the area along with the near by towns as well. There are more options for housing then I was initially lead to believe. I also guess part of me could not realize that I *don't* have to commute to work, I could actually walk, bike, snow ski or bus, instead of spending an hour a day in traffic. :-)

So within the Feldkirchen area anyone have any living tips? Places to avoid living, places to eat, to shop etc?

Any part of Feldkirchen is fine. I used to live in Schwabing when I first moved here, but it used to take me nearly an hour to get into work. Then I moved to Feldkirchen and now it only takes 5 mins, I can even nip home at lunchtime;-)

Also the cost factor, I am nearly paying the same for a 2 bedroom house with a garden as what I paid in Schwabing for a 1 bedroom apartment.

There is an Italien, a Greek, a Thai and a pizza restaurant, a hotel which serves nice food and the Fliegerbrau which serves German beer and food(they make their own beer I believe) and is quite popular with people from all over Munich. There is also a cafe, a bakers, supermarket, florist, hairdressers, beauty shop, chemist. There is probably more but thats all I can think of.

The beer garden where the lake is, is open in the summer months and a lot of people come here to sunbathe and have a barbie and a few beers. You can go swimming in the lake in the summer months.

Just down the road between Feldkirchen and Ascheim there is a waterpark where you can go wakeboarding in the summer and a sports park where you will find tennis courts and other things.

To get to the airport I usually take a bus directly from Feldkirchen to Ismaning S-Bahn station and then get a train from here, only 3 or so stops to the airport on the train.

S-Bahn is direct to central Munich, takes about 20 mins.

Hope that helps!

Don't forget the fruit and veg shop and the fresh fish cooked outside on a Friday! I think we even have a little street market at some point but only been there once. The Kindergartens are all easy to get to and really friendly.

Plus, there's the Riem Arcaden which should cater for all shopping needs a few mins drive down the road.

The lake is just lovely in the summer. My son goes paddling in the water, then there's a playground with slide, climbing frame and sand-pit just near the beer-garden.

You even have easy access to autobahns in all directions so no getting stuck in jams in the city before you get to one.

Well I am coming to town to do some house hunting. I have a week of meetings outside of Munich but July 4th --> 7th I need to find a place to live for the family. Thanks again for everyones input. (oh and if you happen to see any nice family homes, pm me :-) )

I worked in Ismaning for 2 years. Its a really nice place to live with really good restaurants, only 15 mins drive to airport by back roads and 15 mins drive to Munich and 15 mins to Feldkirchen

Feldkirchen is a convenient spot. Good for access to town by both public transport and road. It's in the "inner ring" so is very economic on the SBahn. It's also got easy access to the Autobahn, north towards the airport, south to the mountains (45 minutes to the nearest ski slope) and east to the Czech Republic for a nice weekend in Prague. The evolution of the Messegelände (Exhibition Grounds) only 2 miles away has improved facilities in the area dramatically, for hotels´and eateries especially. Microsoft in Unterschleissheim, (15 miles north), HP and Sony-Ericsson in Dornach (3 miles away), Intel in Feldkirchen itself and Wrigley in Unterhaching (15 miles to the south) have contributed to a thriving international community in the area.

The only thing Feldkirchen is NOT particularly good for is international schooling. MIS (25 miles north) and BIS (30 miles south west), and the European School in Neuperlach (15 miles into the city) are not convenient to reach, especially by public or school transport. If you have younger children, however, it's often a better idea to drop them in the deep end at a local German Kindergarten. You'll be amazed how quickly they pick up the language, and soon become your translaters in the stores...

The area of Feldkirchen and Aschheim is financially one of the richest communities in Bavaria (because of the higher tax payers living there), and local amenities reflect this inward investement in their quantity and quality.

I will be starting work in Feldkirchen in July and living in Aschheim for a few months. Does anyone have any info on good gyms in the Feldkirchen area?

I worked in Feldkirchen for years.
Surburban desert but maybe that what is what you are after.

Hand enough into town on the S-Bahn.

Among others there's the Gim Life Club fitness centre in Feldkirchen, but if you live in Aschheim, then the brisk walk between the two is much cheaper...
