Bedframe / platform for Queen size mattress

Where to buy US sized bed frames?

I recently relocated to Munich from Chicago. Brought a very nice futon mattress with me but no bed frame. (Had to leave that behind). So now I'm looking for a new bedframe or platform. Any idea where I can find such a thing in Queen size (that's roughly 150 x 200 com) in or near Munich? Second hand would be great, too.

that's going to be a bit tricky as the standard sizes are different to the US. you can get

200x140
200x160

probably you can get the larger of these and just leave some space either side of the futon!

i guess specialist shops might be able to help though - but it will probably cost a fair bit to get one that fits exactly. ask at Betten Rid, they advertise all over the U-Bahn.

Just curious...how did you transport a queen-size futon mattress from Chicago to Munich? And how could it possibly be worth the transport costs? They have futons here too! unsure.gif

I guess that does sound a bit odd - the mattress was just one of many, many things ... my entire belongings. But the frame - well that's a different story. It was a beautiful piece (one piece!) I had designed while living in India. In Chicago, the only way I could get it into my bedroom was through the roof when I opened that to add a dormer. So there was no way I could get it out again and I had to leave it behind. Makes sense?

We use a 200x140 frame with a queen mattress, normal type not futon very thick.
We push two large big cushion on top. we pull them out when we want to read in bed, works pretty well.
The space on the side are not that big and don't bother us.

Ok, but why bring the mattress then? That was basically my question. I'm still trying to get my head around that one...did you send it in a shipping container??! I used to have a lot of stuff in the US, and I left it all behind...

I had the opposite problem ... brought a bed frame over from the US, left the mattress behind (couldn't bear to part from the frame). Could not find a queen sized mattress ... had to buy a 200 x 160 cm. So the next problem was to find a mattress base (or "lattenrost") which would artfully join the two.

In my hunt, I of course found nothing "standard" (no queen sized anythings). However at "Matratze Concord", of which there are several in Munich, they quoted me on making a queen sized bed base specially for me. I'm sure they would make the whole frame if you asked.

For the base, they were going to charge about EUR 200. I assume a frame would be much more. In the end I opted to build my own base ... and being the trial-by-error handyman I am, it ended up costing me about EUR 250 in materials and a weekend, plus a sore back for a few weeks until I had the design right. Should have taken them up.

The moral of the story ... head to Ikea and buy a whole frame and mattress probably much cheaper. Keep your queen size mattress to throw on the floor at Oktoberfest time when everyone you know from home rocks up on your doorstep!
