I'm probably looking in the wrong places, but I can't find hummus in the shops. With the large Turkish population I thought it would be easy. Can someone recommend somewhere?

Thanks.

There is a kebab shop / turkish deli on Leopoldstrasse where you can by hummus (it´s on the Lardy's side, but further in the direction of Münchner Freiheit)

failing that, there is my cure-all for the discerning munich foodie: Hertie markthallen at Hauptbahnhof

I keep reading that as "where to buy humans in Munich". I'm not sure whether you can buy them, but there are some places outside the city borders where you can rent them for a short while.

There is a similar area around Hauptbahnhof, but you can likely buy hummus there as well as there are loads of turkish shops and the like.

There is a great deli in Viktualienmarkt... the Homous is ok ... try the Basil Pesto .. it is wünderbar!!!

Have you tried making your own??? Quite easy .. if you can find chick peas in Munich ... ??

You'll probably find chick peas (Kichererbsen) at one of the Indian/Asian stores.

Malc,
you don't have to go anywhere exotic for Kichererbsen.. I found, much to my suprise, that even Penny Markt stock them! The problem is getting hold of the tahini. But Kaufhof offer thath if you look hard enough.

You can find chickpeas in any supermarket actually. I made my first (and last) batch of hummus a few weeks back and it was complete shit so thanks for the heads up on the pre-made stuff Willy.

I got some tahini at Kafer in December last year following a long search in other top-end supermarkets.

PS: The hummus I made tasted like crap too.

in my opinion- the key to quality hummus is a good dose of lemon juice and lots of fresh garlic in addition to the standard chick peas and tahini. also know people who add curry powder, sun dried tomatoes or olives. i prefer mine straight . anyway, something to ponder.

Now that I think about it ... so was mine!!

So it looks like all of us are crap at making homemade hummus!

HME, I used a liberal dose of fresh garlic, fresh lemon juice, even a few chopped coriander leaves and it was still terrible!

BTW, tahini can also be found at V-markt at one of the "ethnic" stands where they sell corn tortillas for any of you brave souls who aren't deterred by the hummus horror stories and still want to make your own.

How can anyone possibly go wrong with making a bloody bean puree?

Get chickpeas, add other stuff, blitz.

ITs just getting the proportions of the flavours right. Try using a good bit of cumin in there. Covers up a multitude of sins.

Anyway, here is a link to loads of hummus recipes if anyone fancies trying again.

I think a key here is having the right machinery. The best home made hummus I've tasted was made with a food processor so the consistency was very good and everything was well mixed together. Not so good was the stuff from the blender, as it couldn't mix everything so homogenously.

There's a small Greek shop in Aberlestr which always stocks home-made Hummus. And Aubergine salad. And sheep cheese salad. All very garlicky and all made on the premises. The shop is inbetween Lindwurmstr and Alramstr.

There's a new "Asian" shop opened up next door where you can get fresh coriander and allsorts of exotic yummies. They even sell PG Tips! Very Asian. :-)

One store owner showed me a can of stuff clearly labeled hummus - it was not Hummus. I tried a few BIO stores. And of course the local Lidl and Markauf. I'm talking about the dip, the spread, the mashed Garbonza bean and spices, and other ingredients, a main staple for vegitarians and vegans. Why so elusive?
