Kite flying day out

For anyone interested in playing with kites

Yo all!

I am thinking of organising some kind of kite flying day out here as we were talking about it in the beergarden last night. Unfortunately it is an extremely weather dependent sport so a fixed date cannot be set.

What I can do now though is gauge interest and find out who has kites, what kiting people want to do and what level people are at.

Any level of ability is allowed, even people who have never flown a kite before. My sports kite is apparently good for beginner-intermediate so anyone can have a go if they like. My other kites are power kites and with the right wind you can get dragged along by it or lifted up by it (fun!)

There are a couple of places we can do this. One is the disused runway near Neuperlach Süd, but the place that I think will be better is the large open field at the top end of Schleißheimerstr. The easy way to get here is the U2 to Dülferstr and you will be right on the field.

We will either go to the red area or the blue area depending on the wind direction.

Notice for this will obviously be short, but it will likely be a Saturday or a Sunday. If anyone is up fof trying one evening then thats doable maybe.

So.. who is up for this? I will reply to this thread when I think its a good time to go.

Tom, I'm in! My own kite is now, sadly, an ex-kite, but I'm pretty happy with big four line foils... or just a little two line stunter. Looking forward to it!
Tom17
I've yet to play with a 4 liner.. my power kites are relatively small (flexifoil Pro 10 & 6). I was looking online and it doesnt look *overly* difficult to make your own - there is software to make the cutting patterns, all I need now is a sewing machine and some kite fabric.. Would love to have a go at making one smile.gif

If I recall correctly, the four liners were blades, 4 and 6 meter jobs. It was on a beach in Orkney, and even with the harness on it was tricky to control them. I think in all I must have been dragged half a mile down the beach... great fun though.

Hi Tom,
I would be interested, I have a 4 liner, (and sewing machine, and material in storage). I've sewn a coupla miles of this material. But I much prefer to fly. 10mph is a good speed for mine, 3mph will work you to keep it up, 15mph or plus will kick you and ya need special clothing to prevent yardburn.
Also, does anyone know about flying kites in the English Garten? Legal?
take care,

Tom17
I am not sure about the legalities of flying ites in the English Garten, maybe if you go north to a quiet area it will be ok.. But I dont think the wind there would be all that great anyway, its loaded with trees everywhere.

Would love to maybe have a try on the 4 liner smile.gif

You are going to play on the tank meadow! That sounds exciting itself.

I'd like to come, but my kite lost its tail and it only seems to like to spin rapidly and nose dive without it.
Tom17
What is a tank meadow then??? Ahh.. Panzer = tank, I see..

Anyway, still feel free to come along, we can all share kites or something. Bring your kite along too as maybe we can fix it smile.gif

"four line foils... or just a little two line stunter", "flexifoil Pro 10 & 6", "kite fabric"... blink.gif
Kites in india are made up of paper and looks like this:

How different is it here???
Tom17
Well kites come in a million different varieties. Ranging from simple single line kites, "pretty" kites, kiddy kites, sports kites, power kites, traction kites. I guess it has developed a lot over the years.

On one end of the scale, your simple paper and wooden sparred kites are done to look pretty, from what gather.

On the other end of the scale you have huge traction kites, costing hundreds of dollars, which are used to pull you around the field in buggies, or pull you around the snow on a snowboard, or pull you around the water on a surfboard (Kitesurfing). These huge traction kites can look more comparable to a paraglider than a kite.

In the middle somewhere, you have sports kites and power kites. I first had a "Peter Powell" dual line stunt kite when I was a child, made with fibreglass spars and ripstop nylon fabric and was in the traditional diamond kite shape. Since the 90's, dual line sports kites have developed to be in a "Delta" shape and use higher-tech materials such as carbon fibre spars. This here is the one I have.

Power kites are just smaller/earlier versions of the traction kites I guess. Usually they are self inflating to create a "wing" shape rather than the flat shape of a normal kite. The idea being that you get more lift and more power.

See how there is a vent at the front that is how it inflates.

Here is one of my power kites.

If there is enough wind, you can barely stand with this kite as it pulls so hard. Its really quite exhilarating. On the bigger power/traction kites you actually need a harness so that the kite is attatched to you - otherwise I guess you wont be able to hold on all the time.

The 4 line thing is needed on the bigger power kites as they can be too big and uncontrollable. The extra 2 lines act as "brakes" by deforming the shape of the "wing". Probably sounds more confusing than it is. I have yet to fly one of these and cant wait.

I hope this helps a bit, kites have apparently come a loooong way from bits of string and paper smile.gif

Wow... very informative... thanks a lot..

Incase anyone is interested, I now have the machine and some kite fabric and will be attempting to make a kite some time in the coming months. If anyone is interested in seeing this done or seeing how it goes, then let me know.
Prag78m
I would be very interested to see it .. I own FlexiFoil and did excursion in their factory in UK several years ago..
Seeing how to make home-made kite would be very interesting for me ..

OK, if the weather stays as it is now (windy, warm and sunny) then we plan to go to Panzerwieze today. We will get there between 6 and 6:30.

Due to the wind direction, we will be in the red area of the below map.

Anyone want to come along and play?

It's at Dülferstr on the U2/U8 - visible on the above map.

Tom...

I am going to be there with off-road skates. & you? Do you have buggies or what?

All the best

Daniel
Tom17
I only have 3 kites. Want to get a buggy at some point but no monies right now.

I might try it with my rollerblades sometime on the runway out by neuperlach sometime though smile.gif
Tom17
I just played with the delta kite for a while in the end, but it was too windy for that really, it was acting more like a power kite than a stunt kite!

Did not see you there, unless off-road skates means one of those land board things. Speaking of which, I quite like the look of them. They look ok to control and much cheaper than a buggy smile.gif
Prag78m
Hi Tom,

I have PM that I am not coming - I have noticed that the wind was too strong on my way back from work..
"...unless off-road skates means one of those land board things."
no see attachment... -three 15 cm big pneumatic tires

" one of those land board things. Speaking of which, I quite like the look of them. They look ok to control and much cheaper than a buggy"
another benefit of Land Board is that it is much more easier portable (you don't need a car to bring it in) than buggy is (although not as easy portable as my skates are..)

"I might try it with my rollerblades sometime on the runway out by neuperlach sometime though"
I recommend you to choose weak wind for that; otherwise: when I have to fall than I prefer soft grass instead concrete :-)

CU next time

DANiel
