I just want to warn people against going to Piatsa Greek restaurant in Schwabing. After searching long and hard with my boyfriend for a nice Greek restaurant, we found Piatsa and thought we could give it a try...

Upon arriving, I ordered 2 große Weinschorle. The waiter appeared to not understand my German, and after repaeting myself 3 times, was informed that you pronounce "große" with an "r"! (My German is absolutely not perfect, but every other local I go to understand my German perfectly and do not need to be told from a dumb Greek waiter...

Second, there were only about 3 tables full and took ages for our drinks to arrive, then ages for the starters to arrive. Credit where it is due, it was well presented - but was nothing special. Then we waited a long time for the main course. When it arrived, the roast potatoes were soggy and cold, and spinach and carrots were also cold (also nothing creative, imaginative or Greek about this dish!). After complaining, we were brought another plate of vegetables and soggy potatoes, but warm.

The meat was good apart from one meat was missing and we had to ask where it was. We were only then informed that they were out of this meat and had automatically substituted it for something else. They *did* offer some Tzatziki and 2 glasses of Weinschorle for free (WOW! Pushed the boat out there! smile.gif Oh, I forgot: one piece of meat seemed to have a *slightly* off taste as if it had been in contact with something that was off! sad.gif

I have had my own dining club and my boyfriend is an excellent cook, and this was possible the worst experience we have *ever* had! Stay away!

Address: Leopoldstraße 33, 80802 München.

Sounds like you were treated to some real greek customer service in that place. I married to a Greek, so it's ok for me to say that. We've tried a few greek restaurants in Munich, and one we would both recommend is Fresco in Freimann. Not a hip or upscale address and not much to look out from the outside, but inside it has a nice, warm decor with a lot of dark wood and the food is a step above your average moussaka and souvlaki taverna. The last time we were there I had gavros, a small mediterranean fish I've never seen on menus outside Greece.

Another good one that I found (live next door to) is To´tzeki´s (Can´t spell it for my life)...but they have really good food, decent service and always a smile. (also no problem understanding bad german or most english. Of course they are also a bit out of the way, being in Haar.

I can (again) heartily recommend Paros in Haidhausen.

Paros

If Vassily is there, and you tell him that "Tim the Canadian" sent you, and you then have bad food, or bad service, or a bad time, I would almost consent to pay for the meal. unsure.gif

Really, we go there all the time, and aside from one night when neither of our two or three normal waiters were there, it has always been EXCELLENT!

My GF just walked in, I asked her what she would say about Paros, and she said "ja, super" - sie ist Deutsch, you know how excited they get.

No, BTW, I sadly do not have any interest in this place.

Usually when we are there it makes us want to go back to Greece...

Best Greek restaurant bar none is Athene in Unterschleissheim. I know its not exactly central but it is bloody fantastic and they have absolutely no problem with kids either.

Its at the bottom of a modern office block and doesnt exactly strike you as being a charming place to eat but walk inside and you enter a differnet world.

Nearly every time we have been we were asked if we had made reservations. No matter what night of the week you go it is nearly always packed by 8pm.

While you make your choice from the pretty hefty menu you get an Ouzo on the house. Kids get a Kinderouzo (lemonade). The portions are very generous and (almost) without fail have been excellent quality as well.

After the meal you will recieve a small complimentary dessert and a cocktail or Metaxa.

As you leave one of the ever attentive waiters or the owner himself will intercept you at the door and offer the ladies a small present of a quarter bottle of either red or white wine.

Now thats what I call a service orientated restraurant !

11 out of 10 for the Athene

They will often force a whole bottle on us at Paros (but don't tell them I told you biggrin.gif )

thanks for the warning...I live right off Leopold str. and found most (not saying all) restaurants on it to be pretty poor though...

Generally I think nearly all of the restaurants on Leopoldstr. are tourist traps.. okay...maybe Burger King isn't smile.gif

Best Greek restaurant by far that I have found almost anywhere (one place in DC was better) is in the Heide Markt in Freimann. 10 minute walk from the U6 Kieferngarten. They even have a large kick ass biergarten and there is a field across the street to play softball in or anything else when it is too crowded in the EG. wink.gif

@ Hartlepool- thanks for the heads up... its always good to know prime location locals that have bad service, and even worse food.

sidenote- maybe the free tzaziki was to cover the bad food flavour! laugh.gif

Everybody seems to overlooking the fact that Piatsa have belly dancers on the tables Fri & Sat nights. Great crack!

I did go mental at the waiter in there once though when he didn't want to serve me and my girlfriend because we were only ordering drinks. (He couldn't be bothered I think). I went to the bar ordered a bottle of champagne and complained. Lots of free Ouzo followed.

In short, yes service is crap but the belly dancers are great. Make your own mind up.

Yeah, forgot that... They turn it into a club on some nights and have a great atmosphere and music (not Zorba but good modern Greek pop music), with lots of Greeks spontaneously dancing including women belly dancing on tables - I recommend it for the nightlife! wink.gif

Maybe Piatsa has changed since it has become a party place later on in the evening. But I have to say (along with Paros) it is one of my favourite places in Munich, and the staff are really friendly to me! The beer garden out back is fun, too.
Maybe you got the wrong guy on the wrong day, I'd like to think so. Piatsa is hugely popular witht he Munich greek population, so it can't be bad surely?

Well I have a close affinity to Greece and can understand and tolerate slightly slow service, but there were FOUR cooks in the kitchen, only THREE tables of people, and FIVE serving staff... how could it possibly be so slow??? :} Maybe I caught them all on the wrong day! LOL

It *is* immensely popular with the Greek community for the nightlife (or was last time I partied there a year or so ago) but come to think of it, I saw no Greeks eating there... smile.gif

I've been to Piatsa 6 times now - last time last Friday & I've always been happy with the service, food & general setting. Maybe you should try this again.

I was there last night, accompanied a mate who needed a bite to eat quickly. As I'd already eaten and didn't intend to stay for very long, I just ordered a beer and when the waiter was taking my mates food order, I told him I wasn't eating, "Ich bekomme nichts", and he took the menus away. So much to my surprise, another waiter arrives out later with my mates order, with an order for me. Which I refused to take as I'd patently not ordered any food. The waiter who took the order returned, understandably irate, and basically told me that I'd ordered, utterly convinced that I had in fact placed an order for gyros with pitta and a tomato salad, before calling me an idiot and throwing a few more insults and storming off. How hard is it to mix up "Ich bekomme nichts" with "Ich bekomme die Gyrospfanne mit Salat und ein Pittabrot extra dazu bitte"? And then be so incredibly rude about his mistake?

So, no, I'll not be returning, not even if they got a big bumper bag of good manners and humility and a competent waiter for Christmas.

Fail.
