Has anybody ever been, or know of, anywhere near Munich where I could go and hire a few guns and go hunting? Rifle hunting is fine, as is going on a bird-shoot with shotguns. At a push clay pigeon shooting (skeet shooting in the U.S. I think?) will do.
An idea of how much it costs would be great too...
There's a guy at work who's well into his hunting. Been clay pigeon shooting with him before (can't remeber where). If you wait till Wednesday/Thursday, I can get details from him.

There is plenty of hunting going on all around , once you get out of Munich itself - you only have to come to my village on a Sunday morning to see all the murdering fcuks, blowing their bugles - which should be inserted in the other end instead - laughing in their fcuking annoying Bavarian accents, then jumping into their shitty 4x4's to drive off any butcher some poor defenceless animal for a laugh!!
It does upset me when they then parade all the Kills through the village on an open bed trailer so even my young daughter can see all the dead hares, deer, [pheasants and foxes piled up on the trailer !!
Jimbo - if you want to join this bunch of sick fcuks - try and arrange to have a tragic accident please !!

Entirely depends on how you do it - hunting stuff you're gonna eat afterwards is fine IMHO, but something like hunting foxes, with dogs, or even guns is not on. Not sure what, if any game, there is round here for rifle shooting - I'm sure you can bird hunt though, and as I said, I don't think that's too reprehensible. Each to his own though i guess.

I am all for guns - I used to be ( years ago - ) marksman qualified in .303 and .22 bore rifles. I have spent many an afternoon Skeet shooting. What I do not like is seeing these people killing animals which for them is a "fun day out" - Farmer Schmidt can grab his rifle and go pot a deer for the family table - I agree with you - but I do not like seeing it turned into a group event !!
Go shoot up a few beer cans - or check out the Olympic Rifle Range - I'm sure there must be clubs there you can join - just leave the wildlife alone - I see those creatures every day ( the deer - the foxes - the hares - the pheasants ) and I would rather continue to see then in their natural environment that hanging from the back of someones trailer !

Jimbo,
the x-box is my solution to the itchy trigger finger. You can hunt down Germans, (I mean Nazis) with authentic pistols, grenades, panzer rockets, machine guns, sniper rifles-complete with scope, and wit and common sense as you relive D-day et al. (Private Ryan) in the game Medal of Honor. If you don't have an x-box already, go to the
X-box lounge in Munich.

Medal of Honor/Spearhead is good to go, I have the PC version, and there are lots of hosted servers online (some with customized maps); which is better than just playing against the game itself.
Only PC game I have played besides Flash Pacman -
http://www.neave.com/games/pacman/game.php, it just doesn't take up all of my quarters like back in the 80's
Haven't seen XBOX, but understand can play online, is that right?

True dat. Online with a DSL line I think. I never hooked it up 'cause I had a hacked box and didn't want to be exposed. Then the chip got knocked about and it is kaput. I left it in the USA with the whole 110-220 thing. I plan to get it fixed when I go back. But for a while there I enjoyed over 50 games for almost a year!!! It is the best.
Thanks for the PacMan. ps

Just to get back on topic, I say that shooting an animal for food is far less barbaric than what the animals go through at the abatoirs. Chicken and Beef dont come come in to the world in cellophane wrapping.

Glorifying hunting is just sick and not something to celebrate. But is is the natural order, all these animals are lower on the food chain than we are.

Indeed. Massive stress means less tasty meat. I would personally prefer to be much closer to the source of my meat, but shops are sooo much more convenient.

Hiya,
I have no problem with hunting to eat as I have done so myself in Scotland. Same with fishing (I will never understand sport fishing though).
You might want to try asking at the Hunting and Fishing Museum in the
Kaufingerstr. as they are sure to have some ideas. It is between Hirmer and
Karstadt. Hiring guns and going on your own is probably not possible (due to gun licencing), going with a guide may well be though.
Cheers

I don't know much about hunting in Germany, but I can relate what I learned from the one conversation I've had with someone who hunts here. Sport hunting is definitely allowed here because it helps balance out a game population that would otherwise run rampant in the absence of real predators. My impression is that hunting is, however, tightly controlled. The guy I talked to had to take an intensive certification course (similar in effort to driver license courses) on hunting technique, identifying game, scatology, census-taking, field dressing, gun laws and whatnot before he got licensed. The guy I talked to was only allowed to shoot after carefully studying the animal population and determining that the animal in view fell within the "excess" category for that location, and wasn't critical for breeding. Overhunting is penalized, as is underhunting!

(Farmers here can sue hunters licensed to hunt in that area if a certain amount of their fields are ruined by animals.)
If you compare this to an area I once lived in where people would walk out of their doors to shoot dinner, and where school fall fashion was either "camouflage" or "flourescent orange,"

you can imagine how stunned I was to hear all the regulation that went in to this guy's hunting background.
Like I mentioned, I've only talked with one hunter, but my impression was that the sport was highly regulated. I don't know how that translates to accessibility, but I have a guess... If you do find something then be sure to share it with us, as I'm curious to know how easily accessible the sport is to the casual sportsman.
(Not a woodsman myself -- I prefer city "wild game"

)

Two hunters from Arkansas are out and one drops his rifle and shoots himself. The other calles 911:
"Hello, Hello? My friend is shot and I think that he is dead! What should I do?"
911 operator: "Well, are you sure that he is dead?"
"Hold on... " small pause. A shot is heard. "Ok, he is dead. Now what?"

Also the real life story of the hunter who dressed up his dog in his hunting gear and actually ended up getting shot dead by the dog.
Police said afterwards the dog would not face any prosecution

It's the same with fishing - you have to go on a course and take exams before you're allowed to fish. Costs quite a bit too from what I remember of the adverts (in all the
U-Bahn stations).

Me and a mate bought an air rifle from the local gun shop for some shooting fun. Nice Weihrauch (could never afford one as a lad) and a 'scope. Used to just drive out of town and set up a few targets - we had Bin Laden, Jeffrey Archer and a few other unsavoury people shot to bits in the woods
Proper hunting is taken very seriously here though and it's unlikely you'll be able to join in for a casual day.

A former colleague of mine in the U.K. used to own his own hunting estate and all you needed to do back home was pay him the money to hire a gun for the day and off you went. Normally about 12 guns at a time would go out and lay waste to the pheasant population of Sussex - everything that was shot was eaten I hasten to add.
It does seem that actual hunting will be a no-go for me, but I certainly would like to shoot something, even if it's only a couple of clays...

There's a list of shooting clubs
here. Maybe you'll be able to find one that will let you have a go on a private rifle range.

Cheers Malc - the interesting thing there is that some of those clubs were founded pre World War 1. I wonder if Hitler used to be a member - I wanna join Hitler's old gun club please...
On the Paintball note, yeah, if enough TT were up for it I would love to do some paintball - I haven't done it for years. On top of that I would like to try go-karting this year, and any other non-violent but testosterone type games/sports - perhaps a little fencing and then follow that with some competitive concrete mixing...

If anyone if game for makin a trip to go skeet shooting i am totally down for that. One of my favorite past times. Went to the oldest skeet range in america over the break. 20 shooting ranges and each with a different theme. Clay pigeons are either flying straight up, crossing each other, underneath you and even a rabbit that runs on the groud. If anyone knows of a sport range similar to this we should definately go. Keep a tally and the winner gets a round of drinks from all participants.
And if anyone is interested in a bird hunt that would be someting i may consider as well. I am not sure what the big game hunting is in germany, does anyone know when the season starts and ends? But with regard to the clay pigeons I would definately be down for that.

There's somewhere in Texas where someone runs a hunting club, yet the targets are naked girls and you hunt with paintball guns. Not a bad alternative

Saw the mini-series "Hitler: The rise of evil" over the chrimbo. Robert Carlyle played hitler and was amazing. The thing should be required viewing.

I'm not a hunter but if anybody does find a way to go plinking (taking potshots at tincans, milk jugs, etc..) around here let me know -- I haven't done that in about 15 years.
I've never been to a proper range either, and would go once just to know what it's like.

Well this might suit then...
Herr Indoors, who is a bit of an action man, comes from Berchtesgardener Land.
So is this is why I know about this:
http://www.rennbob-taxi.de/Yes you can go down the actual bob run (as in the one being used for this year's Bob World Championships in February) in a 4 man bob. No you do not get to drive yourself, if Georg Hackl can smack up his knees on this his home bob run then they are hardly likely to let any old sod go down it are they?
Thought that it might appeal to you lot though!

Perhaps they can arrange a trip to an abatoir for the kids so they can learn what actually happens to the meat they eat every day.

I am starting to develop a theory...
1. My father-in-law has enough guns in his cellar to defend the whole town single-handed including machine guns etc.
2. All the houses here have "bomb-proof" cellars.
3. All the houses here have "blast-proof" window shutters.
4. Everyone here stores enough food and water in their cellar for about 3 months.
Are you guys thinking what I'm thinking?
