Help the Australian moving to Munich

Hi there! I'm considering moving by myself to Munich for 4 months from Feb - June 2004 and have tried my best to find out what Munich's like on the net and through german friends but still have a few questions. I know 2 german words and Im a little worried it will be hard to talk to people. Is it easy to make friends? Is Munich an expensive town to live/play in? Also, I'm Australian and have never lived in such a cold/wet area... What sort of clothes will I need? Any general advice is much appriciated!!

About the language, considering the fact that people from Toytown regularly meet up somewhere, it shouldn't be a problem to talk to other people. It would be a different story if you talk to Germans. I can't really say if it's too much of a barrier, since I already talked a bit of German when I moved here.

What I experienced about the cost of living here, is that housing is really expensive, but the "daily life" isn't that expensive. (except when you go to Murphy's every day... tongue.gif )

About the weather, at the moment it's snowing out here and freezing...

Munich is a very fun place to live in. Lot's of places to go out at night for partying and a lot of people speak english here as well. I'm sure you won't have a problem meeting people here especially since the people on this website meet up very often to party. The prices are a bit high though compared with other places in Europe.

Learn some German, Presh. A lot of Germans in Munich understand and speak English but if you want to meet people, even a poor attempt at the language will go a long way for you. Even I get annoyed when I hear someone talking to a cashier/salesperson/whatever only in English as in, "of course you understand me and can serve my needs."

I'm assuming here that when you talk of meeting people, you're actually wanting to meet some natives. wink.gif

Cheers all, that was helpful! I'm started to get excited as I only have a few more weeks till I leave! I'm planning on doing German lessons if I can afford them and definatley looking to meet the locals - German or otherwise!! I picked up French pretty well so I'm hoping I can pick up the basics while I'm there. biggrin.gif Thanks for your help!
Presh
Also, excuse my ignorance, but why is it called Toytown? blink.gif

It's true. I look out my office window and there's just something not quite real about the place.

An example from The Words of Love and Pastry. wub.gif
Sie haben so schonen Honigkuchen/so schone Zuckertorte.
What lovely honey cakes/sugar tarts you have.
Ich kann in der Nacht nichtschlafen, da ich an Ihre Kuchlein/Marmelade denke.
I can't sleep at night thinking of your muffin/marmalade.
Geben Sie mir Ihre feinsten klebrigsuBen Brotchen/Ihre feinste bayerische Sahne.
Give me your finest sticky buns/Bavarian cream.

You will be suprised how far a little suggestion can go here.
