Have a sudden craving to eat either Hot Dogs or some burgers tonight with loads of fried onions & mustard on?

Where can I buy the proper buns & rolls?

SleeplessInMunich
Most supermarkets have them, Tenglemann, Hit, Wal-Mart...

In the states!
There is a stale version of what you can get in the states at Netto and Lidl. They are actually better there than in some of the more expensive stores.
pootle
Edeka by your office has small burger buns made by muller, but the best are mady by the Golden Toast - but you need someone who has a large range of the Golden Toast products

I must be going blind. The only muffins I have seen in Tengys & Edeka are the breakfast style ones. Will check it out after work.

Try Hertie at the HBf or the Galleria at Stachus

I saw real (decent) hamburger buns at V-Markt on Balanstraße (near St. Martin Straße S-Bahn) the other day. They may also have hot dog buns. Don't remember if the H-buns had seeds or not.

Lidl sell sesame seed covered buns, Tenglemann I think have small unseeded buns, and you can also get larger whopper sized sesame buns at Kaufhof or Karstadt or whatver its called at Munchener Freiheit.
As has been mentioned, they are a bit stale tasting, very dry. If you cut em in half, lightly grill the cut side, and then nuke them in the microwave for 10 seconds, it helps alot.
Kaufhof/Karstadt also sells Heinz gherkin relish, which when mixed with tommy sauce, some mayo and some onion, is pretty close to a big mac sauce.

I bought some yesterday in Mini Mal. They are called Mega Burger Buns with Sesame by Quality Bakers. They look ok but I was slightly put off by the expiry date which is 04.09.05 !! I think if we use them sooner rather than later they may be better. Worth a try. huh.gif

Are you sure your not American and from the south? tongue.gif

Wave dogs are also great, but you have to get them just before they explode! The dogs here are no Oscar Mayer. wink.gif

I just got some Müller seeded buns at Tengelmann and grilled out hamburgers. Tengelmann also had ground beef (not mixed) on sale for a decent price ($2.20ish a lb).
I rolled my burgers out just like I would bread dough and used a large cup to cut them out with. The buns didn't crumble (recently delivered and not days old) and the burgers were actually juicy and held their shape. It was a lovely dinner. cool.gif

The quality of "hackfleisch" here varies alot. Normally the fat content is relatively high, and the beef is often mixed with pork. Just a heads up for anyone considering making up their own burgers. You need some fat of course, thats a given, but I've certainly made meatballs here that did not taste quite right, and had a consist4ency I was not too happy with.
Tim
You definitely need non-mixed ground beef. Sorry to all you P.C. people out there but a burger is a beef only thing - no pigs allowed. If you go to the butcher, he or she will be able to make some up on request if there is none on the shelves. (BTW, ground beef is Rind Hackfleisch.

As for buns, Munich has some of the best hamburger buns on the planet, made fresh every day and you can get them on every corner, they are called "Semmel" - that's a Kaiser to us N.A. folks. smile.gif Munchners like to put Livercheese on 'em and eatthem at lunch with mustard. Hmmm/Yummm dry.gif

Forget Golden Toast, please. That ain't Wonder bread wink.gif

you know that leberkaes isn't literally liver / cheese, right?
Tim
If not a wonderful blend of liver and cheese then what, I ask you, WHAT?

I think I sense a new topic: German Words That Are Not What They Claim To Be.

Berliner - resident of Berlin or doughnut?
Semmel - bread crumbs or kaiser bun?
Bitte - Please or You're welcome?

http://www.food-from-bavaria.de/frameset.p...nzelprodukt.php

So something like :

The basic ingredients of Bavarian Leberkaes are coarse de-tendonised beef, fatty pork, fat tissue, water and salt. It is important to point out that there is no liver in Bavarian Leberkaes, although this is usually the case outside of Bavaria. Leberkaes is baked in a cake tin and is a pinkish colour inside, and has a dark crusty outside.

That description just put me off Leberkaes for a while! biggrin.gif

Its bologna people and most bologna does taste better fried.

Bologna? Isn't that Fleischwurst?

I treat livercheese like a meatloaf hotdog. Cut off a slab, fry it up, smack it on a Kaiser and squirt mustard all over the beast.

Mmm Mmmm good.

As for this propoganda that it contains neither liver nor cheese, BAHH! I say.

No it's not..it's Spam dammit! I was at a convention here once and at the food place there, they naturally had Leberkässemmeln. Well, seeing as some international events are held here, there were english translations next to each food items and next to this one was stated, "Spam on a bun". I almost died laughing.

A Czech friend of mine here in Munich wants to make authentic American hotdogs and ask me if I knew where to buy the soft hot dog buns like they have in the states (not the German ones that are similar and hard).

I cant eat bread (celiac) so have never looked for any bread products so dont know where to send her.

Anyone have any ideas?

thanks in advance

Does anyone know of any brand of hamburger buns which are actually decent, and stores that sell them? The ones I've bought here over the years (don't remember brands actually, but the standards from MiniMal, Tengelmann, etc.) basically fall apart in your hands. A good sesame bun that holds together would be fantastic. Roman Meal would be ideal. Has anyone had luck finding something good?

Uncle Nick
You could always ask Hazza where he gets his.

Thanks for the merge. Here's a subject review of some of the hamburger bun brands mentioned:

Müller buns: Crap, avoid.

Mega Burger Buns with Sesame by Quality Bakers: Less crap than Müller, an experienced bbq'er can finish the burger mostly intact. Majority of people still end up using knife and fork.

Kaiser rolls: Not bad, Naturkind has a good "bio" roll. I think these are better for sloppy joe's, 'cause hamburgers should use real hamburger buns.

I haven't seen any Golden Toast buns, I'll look for them since they're recommended. Also will look at the selection from VMarkt next time I'm in there. So far, the one's I've tried (and remembered) have all been a bit stale and crumbly.
