Ultimate Frisbee - Wednesdays and Sundays-----------------------------------------------------------------
This game looks like excellent exercise, I think I'll come along on wednesday.
Ben, I actually thought that you had came up with the name 'ultimate' just for this thread

I read the rules but I see its a non contact sport...As I've never played before, I cant guarantee that I won't get really pissed off when I can't win the frisbee and just thow in the random rugby tackle here and there!!

@scotsman: yeup, it's quite a big game in the states and down under - although there are about 5 teams in Edinburgh so I guess it must have got to Glasgow too.

I know it's impossible to please everyone, but if this is going to be a regular event, wouldn't it be better to schedule it on a day that doesn't have another regular event (i.e. not on TT Tuesdays or Curry Night)?
benpanter
Apr 11 2005, 10:40 am
So far, the intersection between
curry night folk and frisbee players is exactly one - me. I'm sure I can make both if I need to!
But seriously, we chatted about it last week and the week before, and Wednesday works for the people who turn up - and it's them who this is aimed at. I'm not after any committment, if someone wants to turn up on one day and not the other, odd days when they can make it or even one day and never again, I really don't mind. I just want to play!

Just to let everyone know frisbee is played in the same place as Rugby.
I think Wednesday is a good day, and there's hardly ever a day when there isn't anything going on.
P.S. This game is a high energy game with lots of fun and laughs

It's on at 6, so if you want to curry up as well, you could come for a run around and then disappear off to your curry at 7.30.
Healthy.

Excellent! So glad to see it on a regular basis! Thanks a ton, benpanter, for setting it up. I'll definitley be there Wednesday.

DW, you are such an aero nerd
P.S. What Re is the flow in that pic?
benpanter
Apr 11 2005, 1:45 pm
@DW: Does that mean that the only advantage over a normal frisbee is the spoiler for stability? I guess all the stability in a frisbee comes from the angular momentum of the spin (gyroscope). Which would explain why more spin applied to the disk makes it fly better. Hmmm... interesting.
DrivinWest
Apr 11 2005, 2:13 pm
@ BSF and BP
Advantage 1: Lots of I
A higher moment of inertia is good for stability; once you get it spinning it is inclined to maintain that angular veocity more readily. This particular Aerobie disc has a very thin center section with a heavy rim around it. This increases the moment of inertia while not increasing the overall weight of the disc.
Advantage 2: Aerodynamic
Not sure about this. I suppose it is meant to lower the pressure on top thus creating greater lift for a given velocity (straight line, not angular). It could also be a turbulence producing mechanism like turbulators on high aspect ratio wings; they create an (more) efficient turbulent flow effect while at low Re numbers.

All I have to say, if we use an aerobie, when you throw it way over my head, YOU can be the one to jog the extra kilometer to pick it up.
benpanter
Apr 11 2005, 2:24 pm
yeah... I think for the game we'll play with a bog standard 175g disk... but it'll be fun to chuck the aerobie about too.
BostonSportsFan
Apr 11 2005, 2:27 pm
showem: we could throw the disc upside down and then it could come crashing down on your head (or take out your ankles). You wouldn't have to run at all!

Me, a handful of folks from work, some people from here... should be enough for a good game again!

I'm still hoping to make it. If I'm in the same state I was yesterday after work I don't think I'll be showing up.

Sounds like enough! Even 3v3 is alright, 4v4 or 5v5 is ideal!
I will try my best to be there (90% likely that I will). Figure ride home at 4:30 ~ 5, then jump into other cloths, jump on the S/U - Bahn, and try to be there shortly before 6. I haven't played in a while, and I'm definitly looking forward to playing again!

@BSF: First Sunday I stopped counting at about 25. Last Wednesday we played 7 on 7. Last Sunday we were 8 on 9. Tonight... maybe less.
@jip: Turning up late is no problem really, we tend to just pass the frisbee about for the first ten/fifteen minutes anyway.
@mybutterfly: Great - I'll try to moderate my anti-bug language this time

Notice to all: Wearing trousers rather than shorts is a very good idea. The grass is full of blood sucking bugs - they hurt for a week!

Glad you all enjoyed it... I'm away for the next 2.5 weeks, but if you stick to the times above I'm sure the folks from work will continue to turn up and play... I'll be checking the board every now and again while I'm away too.

Thanks all for a great time!!

@mybutterfly: Preferably someone who isn't twice your size!
haha, now I've got new shoes, so no more falling on my arsch every time I try to stop. Now I've just got to see about getting my leg better after pulling a muscle riding to work the other day...
See ya'll tomorrow.
As as side note, just kinda putting the fishing line out there with this idea. Anyone interested in a fun league UF thing? Play winning team gets a round at the end of each night/day of games? I've put my thoughts on how it could work below. If you are afraid to post that I'm an idiot for suggesting it, or afraid of looking like an idiot for showing support, pm me and I'll try to keep a tally of ja/nein.
My proposed structure:
Teams: Randomly chosen at the beginning of each gameday. Teams of 4.
Reason: Avoid the case where not everyone from a team can show up all the
time. Also helps avoid perpetual 'Super Teams' who win each week
Play: 3 on 3, so that each team has a sub. Slightly smaller field. ~60 min game
w/ halftime?
Payout: Loosing team buys winning team a round at the end of the night. 0,5l or
smaller bier/cider/soft drink (trying to avoid expensive drinks).
Playing time, team size and #players in play at any given time is negotiable. Can also keep individual player stats in order to crown a UF champ runner-up and second runner-up at an end of the season Arc party

Not restricted to TT members.

This idea might work, but probably only if its a different night than these (i.e. not Sunday or Wednesday), and can get enough people who would be into ultimate enough for game with stakes. I would definitely consider though.
See you tomorrow all, can't wait. Definitely busting out the cleats, I slipped way too much last time!
are you still meeting where the X marks the spot?

Yup. We meet there, then find space someone closeby to place. Just look for the people throwing a frisbee and speaking English near there!
yep, the X still marks the spot. Or at least I haven't heard anything different.

Apr 17 2005, 11:15 am
Yeup, I'm pretty sure BSF's is a 175er.
With regard to the mini tournament thing... maybe.
My plan for these sessions was just to have fun. Hence, if one team is being muellered we always change the players round so that they're more evenly matched. Nobody keeps score, because it doesn't really matter what the score is at the end of the day. When I think enough people look exhausted, we play best of three to bring the pace of game back up and finish on a high note (although the day after I can never remember who won!).
Perhaps I'm a bit idealistic, but I just want anyone who turns up to be able to play and have a good time - even if they've never done it before and aren't that good. I don't like it when the game gets overly competitive, because then the weaker players feel they've let the side down and don't get to touch the frisbee. The level last Wednesday was high, but usually we get some people who aren't so good, and I want to include them too.
Although the mini tournamet could be fun, for the time being I'd rather just stick to playing... but I'm just one player, and if that's what everyone else wants to do I'm not going to stop you!

[Edit 1: Warning, I'm jetlagged and this post could be lost in translation]
[Edit 2: I'm also worried that I sound like that BASEketball film...]

Apr 17 2005, 11:25 am
I agree with benpanter about the regularly schedule games, which is why I suggested we perhaps do the tourney on a different day, so that both those who want to play while keeping score and those who just want to toss the disc around without worrying about score can have fun with frisbee!

Just a quick reminder, today's game (as are all Sunday games) is at 4pm, NOT 6pm like on Wednesday.
