Anyone know some good resources to find furnished flats in Berlin? Thanks!
interplanetjanet
Try craigslist Berlin. It's nowhere near as big as it is in the States, but there are some resources, including housing listings. Good luck!

Hey everybody.

Excellent resource you guys have here. I know forums aren't profitable so it's really appreciated.

I was curious if anybody was familiar with the fully-furnished accomidation leases they have available in many cities. The names HomeCompany or Citymitwohnzentral might come to mind, but when it comes to finding a place to call home, a wider variety is definately a plus!

To start off as a resource, I'll include what I've found and my experience.

- HomeCompany - never answered emails. Sent to three different addresses, one of which bounced. Most of their listings don't have photos.

- Citymitwohnzentral - They seemed helpful, but they don't have that much listed.

Thanks in advance for replies wink.gif

There are two magazines I can recommend looking into. I hope you understand some German at least. smile.gif The one is called "Zitty", the other "Tip".

Zitty-online:

or

Tip - online:

Look here for private ads posted for furnished rooms to let.

Mitwohnzentrale is ok. Rent in Berlin is very low so be careful - if someone offers you a 25 m2 room for 400 Euros you are being ripped off!

just out of curiosity.. why is rent in Berlin very low?

Because many people move away from Berlin, i.e., you have a lot of empty flats. There are hardly any international companies in Berlin providing jobs. Berlin is situated in the middle of "nowhere", unless you like traveling to the old eastern parts, to Denmark/Sweden/Norway or Poland. It's like they say, location, location, location. The people earn less than, for instance, in Bavaria or in Frankfurt. Many young families with money move into the so-called "Speckgürtel" around Berlin where they can afford to buy a home with a garden for their kids. Berlin has very high levels of unemployment, half of Berlin is what used to be the old DDR. You still have any number of old, run-down buildings where nobody wants to live. In short, people earn less and can therefore not pay as much. Supply and demand. It used to be different. There was a time when you could forget about finding a flat in Berlin(1994-1997).

Yeah, all the young professional girls are leaving Berlin. sad.gif

Thanks very much for the replies!

I'm gonna check out those two you posted, MB. smile.gif Ty.

Berlin is kind of like Montreal when it comes to both rent and the diversity of the culture. To add onto the conversation of Berlin vs. other parts of Germany, it's kind of like Toronto vs. Montreal as Munich vs. Berlin. (You can replace Toronto with Vancouver to get the same idea).

I know it's a little north of Toytown, and maybe out of the realm, but thought that I'd ask if anyone has any advice on finding an apartment in Berlin from around May 1.

I'd like to find something furnished for short term, about 3 months, so that I can get to know the city a little better before finding an area to settle in for longer. But I would consider going longer since it may keep me from getting completely ripped off due to the WM2006.

If anyone can suggest some websites or Berlin papers with a good classifieds section, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

Pretty much the same tips as for Munich - most of the websites are nationwide. Just a couple of the papers...

Berliner Morgenpost
BZ Berlin

I would recommend either of the two Berlin bi-weekly magazines - Zitty or Tip. Friends of mine have found apartments that way. Their classified sections are online too!
jml
Craigslist Berlin has a few listings.
Natalia
Zitty

I'd recommend Prenzlauer Berg

For three months you would be better off looking for a room in a house/apartment..

Hi! Just browsing through some English-German forums (I'll be doing undergrad thesis research in Germany [mostly Berlin] and Austria from May-July) and had to reply when I came across your post!

If you haven't found anything yet, PM or email me, and I can give you the contact info for the lady who owns and rents/sublets individual apartments in a building in Prenzlauerberg, near Senefelder Platz (or, two stops from Alexander Platz, as it is continuously described to me wink.gif). They are very small apartments (I'm staying in a 1-bedroom), but fully furnished and quite nice! Mine has a kitchen, desk, laptop connections - all I really need! wink.gif As I mentioned, I'll be renting one for about nine weeks (from a fellow American who sublets the apartment when she's in the U.S.), but I know there are many others available (well, I don't know specific DATES of availability, of course!, but they exist) for short or extended stays, because a friend of mine is also renting one for two weeks in July.

Anyway. Just throwing that out there, in case you're still looking! smile.gif
