American measuring cups for cooking

Where to buy them in Munich

Anyone have any American measuring cups they don't need anymore, or can tell me where I can get some? I only bake in American, and am finding myself using guesstimation. Some things just don't turn out exactly right that way tongue.gif

Any help, ideas, much appreciated. Thanks!

Tina

Sorry, can't get them here. Have a friend bring them on their next visit. It's a nice thing to request, as the person knows that it's something you can really use and really need. I even had my mom bring me a butter wrapper which I then pasted onto construction paper so I could better cut my weird-shaped German butter pats into tablespoons. That was too much trouble though -- I ended up improving my guesstimation, as it was less hassle.

See also the "General Tips" in the British and American Foods page of the Wiki (I wrote it). wink.gif

i have a 2 cup capacity measuring cup which you welcome to have when we leave in about six weeks from now. just remind me and we can make arrangements for you to come pick it up if you haven't found one by then.

for butter i use a scale and an online conversion resource i found here. they also do all sorts of other cooking conversions on there. i find it to be exteremly helpful.

For Mac users, I've found Koalacalc wonderfully helpful. You just choose the quantities you want to convert between, type in the number, and voila! It saves you from having to do the math.

In my kitchen, but you can't have them-sorry. wink.gif

It would really just make sense to print out a list of common quantities and their conversion. Would only take a couple of minutes. Get fancy and have it laminated and then just keep it in the kitchen. Problem solved and you can consider yourself to be all cosmopolitan.

I got some at Ikea in Regensburg...

Ikea thing

but is it cups and teaspoons and tablespoons? Do tell! That'd be great to know!

Yeah you can convert convert convert, but it's really a pain and puts you off baking...

I got some in my Ikea starter box when I got it back in october. It´s on ml but it also states the cups. The only problem is that it only measures up to half a cup, so sometimes I have to use like too much of those to bake something. I think in Ikea you may find something useful or maybe in Walmart, they usually have some american-like products.

I have a set you can have. PM me to arrange a meeting time/place.

They can also be purchased online here:

This is also the only place I have found pumpkin pie ingredients if that interests anyone.

I use my ikea set all the time...it has cups and yeah it only goes to half a cup...but I can just double it up if I need to. Takes a bit longer but hey. I also like the fact that it has teaspoons, tablespoons and even 'a pinch' hehe.

Hi Tina,
Just check Karstadt in the household department. They ususally have plastic containers marked with multiple measurements: liters, pints, quarts, cups, and sometimes grams for sugar and flour. If you don't find one, I have one 1- 1/2 cup measuring cup you can have from the US. rolleyes.gif Leave a message here if you'd like to have it.

Great site A-Ron. Know of anymore US supply sites over here?

wiki/British_and_American_Foods#Online_Shopping - it's wiki, so anyone can change it and add the shop A-Ron mentioned with a review of it.

So A-Ron, you've bought things there and been happy with the service etc.? Add it to the wiki!

I don't have any others that aren't already listed in the wiki. I haven't actually purchased anything from them just yet as I only recently discovered them but I will soon and will post my experience in the wiki for prosperity smile.gif

I know a local Tupperware lady, so if you want to order some measuring cups just let me know...I'm sure they've got 'em.

Thanks all. Way too lazy to do the conversion thing (I don't have time to sit down and read a novel here, who has time to make a conversion chart and worry about it every time you want to cook?), and a few people have a set up for grabs. If that doesn't work, next stop tupperware or Ikea.

I am set. Yeah. Next stop, kitchen. Just so you know, the first batch of Rhubarb crisp with guesstimation was way sour. The second batch is way yummy, eating some right now.

Yes, have to support IPJ...Tupperware is your way forward.

Rose & I spend many a happy year sending the stuff out by the lorryload...it costs a bit more but you'll never have to buy any more.

The Tupperware in Germany appears to measure in ml and pints and oz, but no cups. Anyone find evidence to the contrary?

I went to Kustermann yesterday and found Messbecher, but nothing measuring smaller than 1/4 cup, and they were all just the jugs with markings along the side -- an OXO Good Grips one, a Pyrex one -- but they didn't look that accurate to me. I'm sure those work ok, but I really like the separate cup for separate measures concept... smoothing off the extra flour with a knife after sifting it in...

If your Tupperware rep is work her salt she will be able to get you some American measures. The company is based in USA and "connections" will be possible if they try wink.gif

Ikea now sells American cup measurements in silver cups and shows on 1 side 1/2 cup and 1 cup, on the other it shows grams (so a different sort the to blue cup pictures further up in this thread). I think it cost EUR 1.99, so double the price of the blue cups, but silver's nice smile.gif

UA, do you mean Idealisk?

.com

de I don't see cup measurements on it, but I haven't seen it live either.
Katrina
I've got that IKEA one - there's only a half cup and 1 cup measurements on it on the inside (other side to the ml measures - UA also says is only 1/2 & 1 cup measure above too).
For the other amounts I use a plastic jug I got at Küstermann. Or the spoon set from Tesco's...
