Bondi Australian Bar - Last orders (ever)

Closing for good: 14.May.2005

The Bondi Australian Bar just down the road from Karlsplatz, is closing for good. Tonight (Saturday 14.May.2005) is their last night.

I'm not sure why they're closing. But I guess it's the usual reason - i.e. not enough customers.

A quote from the TT reviews page:

QUOTE
Was in the Bondi the other night when a kangaroo walked in and ordered a beer !!!. The bartender charged the kangaroo 10 euros and said "You know, we don't get many kangaroos coming in here."

The kangaroo then turned to him and said, "At 10 euros a beer, it's not hard to understand." !!!

:-))

The location at Sonnenstrasse 8 will now be turning into a Tex Mex restaurant run by, of all things, a Chinese team.

Though, I don't miss it, it's really sad when some business closes.

It has / had its own plus points. Good location, spacious, ambience and of course English speaking crowds.

Maybe it required better management, in terms of marketing and pricing. sad.gif
Owain Glyndwr
although it is sad when people lose their livelihoods, i say good riddence.

hmm... so I guess you liked the place.
Brummie
the burgers were good. rip.
Tom17
The (very yummy) burgers rested in peace over a year ago now sad.gif

We went there a few weeks back to get one to find they didnt serve real food any more.
oli2000
Indeed. Was also there hungry a few weeks ago and was served a Dr Oetker pizza from out of the freezer, for € 9.- (!).

Never really liked the place, also b/c they had no decent beer. Fosters isn't the way to go for a local Munich bar.

Greg, the Aussie dude who used to run Bondi (until December last year, i.e. he left long before it closed) is now running Bunnys Pub in St.Johann, Austria. If you go skiing, snowboarding, or hiking round there, make sure you drop in and say "Hi"!

gideon
spent many a drunken night in the bunnies bar, used to be run by an aussie called paul before greg moved over. shame about the bondi, watched a certain mr. wilkinson kick a rather just in time drop goal there one saturday in a november long gone by... ohh did i get home drunk that day.
Jeeves
Prices up, quality down. Shut up, close down.

Where to for post-curry karaoke now?
Wee Mun
Bondi was the nicest looking ex pat pub in town, just unfortunate that they had to pander to scottish and newcastle and serve fosters. The location was always a problem too.
JoolyBooly
for me it wasn't the location, but the ventilation and sound.. it was always hot, smokey and noisy, the beer sucked, was expensive, and then they stopped doing edible food. What did they expect?
3 Lions
The location was spot on, U-Bahn, S-Bahn and Tram right outside. The problem was the lack of air conditioning and the 4,50€ cost of the shite beer they served.
Wee Mun
They must have been over charging you then, because a pint of fosters was never 4.50€

I always drank Carlton cold in there anyway, that was 3.60€ a bottle.

They also had air conditionin installed, but that was only a month or so before Greg went off to the Tirol. I think they decided it was not worth the cost of running it when the pub was winding down anyway.

The kitchen was closed because it was running at a rather big loss, shame, because they did some decent grub.
madgibson
What a bummer! I liked the Bondi for Karaoke - great atmosphere. Food used to be good when they served it. Dead handy for U/S-Bahn too. Oh well, that's life I suppose in the current economic climate. At least with Tex Mex - there'll be a new place to try for cocktails smile.gif
grtho
I had some fun times in there. Location was good for public transport but simply not an area where many people go out at night. Beer wasn't cheap either. Munich is a safe city but there were some stories of women getting hassled when they left the bar at night.
mightypies
If it had frontage, would've been a much different story. S/U Bahns, Burger King next door, and not as small and dungeon-y as some pubs. still, be nice to get out to a different pub than ex pat ones all the time
xargon
Long overdue, I say.

Hey Gideon,

Paul does actually still own Bunnys but has taken on Greg as the manager to run the pub for him. He is still very much involved but more behind the scenes now.
Wee Mun
Yup, Paul is still the lease holder. I am off down there this weekend to play a few rounds of golf with Paul and Greg smile.gif

Nicest looking?? Yeah right
Wee Mun
What was wrong with it? Nice big bar, DJ booth well set up, originally split level with dart boards, plenty of room to either sit or stand. Lots of aussie memorabilia.

NB. I do not understand people who say things like good riddance and about time, you were never forced to drink there. There are 6 friends of mine now looking for work who I am sure would love to meet people with that attitude. Tossers

why did it close down?
Bert
I did not say good ridence or anything of the sort, I just don't think that it was the best looking ex pat pub, far from it in fact.
Kza
Death to all pubs charging more than 3 euros a pint!!!
mightypies
Ok, we've all decided it was probably not the best pub in town, but it wasn't hopeless. just had no frontage = not enough thirsties off the street. Would much rather have the bondi than a tex mex place run by a chinese woman.

@Bert: I only addressed my first paragragh to you, the second was a general rant about posts earlier in this thread.

@aquascutum: It closed down because it was not making money. I think this was due to the location and no helles. Also as Mighty Pies said, there is no frontage, and it is placed right next to a burger king and an amusement arcade, so the lit sign outside was not obvious.

I think if there had been a big guinness sign outside, and it had been an irish pub, it would have had more success.

Harry will be happy as The Arc is the only expat pub in town charging less than €3 as far as I am aware smile.gif

If it had have been an Irish Pub and was charging what Bondi charged, then it would have failed. fact.

Sorry that people have lost their jobs, everyone slagging the bar off here are not critisizing the people who worked there. Its the fault of the owners for signing a binding contract with Fosters that stopped them even selling bottled helles. (Please correct me if I am wrong).

What do you expect us to do? Go to a bar where the beer is crap and overpriced just because the bar staff will lose their jobs if we dont.

First time I ever went here was for the 1st birthday party and the tarts & Vicars theme. Had an absolute blast, but we all concluded the same things -

No Air conditioning make its pretty unbearable when its full.
4€ per beer was a rip off and the fact it wasnt helles just makes it insulting.

Bondi were a sponsor on TT and they were well aware of what people thought of it. I even used to speak to Bex who worked there. Not seen her for ages? So, they had chances to do something about the problems. As far as I can see, nothing changed.
Wee Mun
fair enough, shows how long it is since I have been in there.

I shall rephrase then...

Harry will be happy as The Arc is the only expat pub in town charging less than €3 for decent helles as far as I am aware smile.gif
Wee Mun
@3 Lions, I am in no way suggesting that anyone should have gone there against their wishes, I just find the good riddance etc comments rather unpalatable. I find it rather like saying thank fuck someone is dead even though they had absolutely no effect on my life whatsoever...

Bex stopped working there a couple of months ago, I know her well.
mightypies
Fair point wee mun.

Not meaning to be silly here, or say something which could be offensive, but it's simple, some people liked it, others didn't, some didn't mind. At the end of the day, it's a place some people enjoyed either working at, going to or stopping by occasionally, and now it's no longer there.

Not as if i'm sitting on the fence or anything...
Yeti
It's a royal pain in the arse when your local shuts down though. Never been to the Bondi but I used to live in O'Reillys. Still miss that place.
Wee Mun
Quite a few of the O'Reilly's crowd ended up drinking in Bondi.
gideon
thats the economics of it, nice idea did not work, shame to see it go. sad for the guys who are out of a job. and as for beeing tied to a brewery thats how it works, nobody else will invest in a pub/bar/restaurant apart from them. banks wont touch you.

edit, yep o'reily's was one of the nicest pubs in munich, miss it too. but now there‘s the arc at least there is somewhere small and cosy again. (takes of old gits hat)
Wibble
Was a real shame when O'Reilly's shut down.

However, before that I used to drink in Hard Days Night in Occamstr. Started to think I was cursed - first local closes down so then I found O'Reilly's and then that shut down.

Given up having a local now.
potbelly
@Wibble ... Böllöx ...practically every bar in Munich is one of your locals these days wink.gif

Yep. Shame O'Reillys shut down. It was a cracking bar. Closest expat bar to it so far has been The Arc.
Eric the Hamster
FYI - O'Reillys is now a good club

More tea, Vicar?
Does no-one go to The Outland on Rosenheimer Platz?

Cheap beers, nice barman from Wolverhampton (Nick?) and loads of tv's. Screen comes down for all big games.
potbelly
MTV .. Yep regularly. In fact I was there last night. Good bar staff and friendly atmosphere plus a great pint of Guiness for when your watching the Rugby.
More tea, Vicar?
Good stuff. I'll look out for the man with Guiness and no sight of his toes during the upcoming games. (Now that will boil it down to only 15 on the day.)
potbelly
@MTV laugh.gif Yep... Starting on monday evening with the Lions vs the Argie bargies
Wibble
Will also be in Outland on Monday. Definitely my favourite pub for watching rugby. Have some very good memories of watching the World Cup there and some rather large gaps in my memory as well.

@potbelly - you only drink guiness when it's not your round. When it's your turn to buy it goes something like 'Hmmm, too much Guiness - think I'll have a helles instead' (I'm SURE it has nothing to do with the price). Not to mention your rather disturbing habit of drinking Apfelschorle for the first half of the evening!!! tongue.gif
