Hi.
As some will agree, CNN gets into your head after a while as it's the only English language channels on standard cable connections.. and it's terrible.
Is it at all possible to get BBC Prime (they got it on cable in Portugal and it's great), BBC1, BBC2, ITV etc over here at all?
Is it a simple phone call or is it ridiculous expense and hard work?
Cheers.

Not too many choices here in Germany. Some of the others have been discussing about getting Sky here, best to do a search through the Toytown topics to see if you can find it. But you can get satalite and then you'll get BBC1 etc.
Other than that the German equivalant is Premiere, but then you get the occasional film in English, and BBC Prime.

Thanks Pepper for that, so is it fair to assume that if i want anything other than what i got already, its dishes or Premiere subscriptions?

I have just checked premiere's website and searched for 'bbc' and it brought nothing up. Plus i looked in the list of channels and again no joy.. so it don't seem like premiere is the way to go for the channels we know and love.
btw, i would also like vh-1 too if anyone knows how to get it.
Are there perhaps any other cable/program suppliers besides Premiere? or is that the only one?

You can get BBC Prime - but you need a digital receiver which you will probably only have if you subscribe to Premiere.
You do not subscribe to BBC Prime through Premiere though - you need to call Kabel Deutschland and they will ask for your Premiere smartcard number (found on the back of the card) - this is how they activate the channel for you - on your box only and not for everyone in your building. Tell them you want BBC Prime, or the English language package only (about 5 euros a month) and if you're lucky you will get it that day.
If you don't have Premiere and the digi box you need to receive it, forget it.

You can get a satelite dish and a Sky box through Bavaria Satellite TV (a couple of English guys that will supply and install). Then you can chose betweent the full package where you have to pay each month. Or you can just get free to air channels so then there is only the initial set up charge. The free to air channels worth watching are BBC 1, 2, 3 and 4, and Sky News and TCM, but thats about it. Thats all I have and am OK with it, though. I agree, BBC Prime is fantastic!! (I moved from Portugal 4 months ago!!!). I loved People and Arts too, but sadly we cant get that here either!

BBC 1, 2, 3 and 4, and Sky News and TCM,
Okay, I'm totally unfamiliar with these (sorry--just an American git here). What can I see?
I've also heard that there's a service somewhere that gets in NBC from the states, but no further info on how to access that.
Our building has a satellite dish, but we've been unable to figure out how to take advantage of it. Right now we only get about 12 channels and I can't believe I'm saying it, but I miss RTL II. When they changed channels back in November, we couldn't receive it anymore.

I think you need to get Sky if you want to watch BBC. More info
here.
BBC channels will probably be available on german terrestrial digital TV, but we'll have to wait till 2005 for that...
Malcolm, where did you hear about the possibility of 2005 BBC german terrestrial digital transmitions? Sounds interesting.

Saw it in the user forum on the
http://www.digitalfernsehen.de/.
Have a look at
http://forum.digitalfernsehen.de/forum/cgi...c;f=41;t=000743There is also a forum for receiving foreign channels
here.

That forum simply confirms that DVB-T (digital terrestrial TV) will come to Munich in 2005, and not that BBC in any form will come with it, which is very unlikely, although not impossible. DVB-T is already available in other major cities in Germany, but not with BBC. Interestingly, one of the cable networks in Austria now included BBC1 and 2, but they are probably simply highjacking it off the digital satellite service, where it's free to recieve in any case...
I think you'll find the folks at
Bavaria Satellite very helpful.

Hi All, I've been reading the posts in this thread and would very much like to get at least couple of other English channels. I agree that CNN sucks.
Could anyone out there please give me more information on obtaining English channels through Premiere?
Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. I'm afriad I couldn't get my fiance to agree with using the Sky Satellite route.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks flogger and Uncle Jamal. I have one more question. Is BBC Prime only sports or does it include other programming? Like history channel, A&E, movies, etc.
Thanks again.

another question on the topic:----
how can you find out if cable tv is available in
your area???
anyone know?

BBC Prime has no sport at all. It's a selection of popular BBC programming on one channel for countries outside the UK only. Shite like Ready Steady Cook and the Vicar of Dibley is currently flavour of the month, but they also do decent comedy and some documentaries. Saddest of all I have started watching Eastenders again...
I think the website is
www.bbcprime.comwalker1, all areas should have cable to my knowledge. Whether your building receives it is another matter - ask your hausmeister. I'd be surprised if it didn't. Cable here isn't up to much though so I wouldn't lose too much sleep if he doesn't answer in the affirmative.

Hi again!
I just talked to Premiere and they told me that 80% of their movies come in English (you can choose Deutsch or English). They also said that when you get the plus package (which consists of 13 channels), that most of those channels are also in English. Such as Discovery, Planet, Sci-Fi, Nostaglie, etc.
Does anyone out there have Premiere and, if so, is this really true?
Uncle Jamal

A lot (not sure about 80%) of the films they show are in dual language, so yes you can watch a lot of them in English, but the only other channel that transmits programmes in English, to my knowledge at least, is MGM. Discovery isn't that's for sure.

On Premiere, there is only CNBC, MGM, and usually about 5 to 6 films a day in English. With the English package part you get BBC Prime, and some strange channel called Extreme Sports. Last time I attempted to watch it, some Aussie was buggie driving through the desert, regularly tipping the buggy over !
