Hi there, we're a family of four (plus dog & cat) currently living & working in Taiwan, where we've lived for over 8 years now. Although we are originally from Germany, we have no clue about the cost of living there right now & would like to hear from non-Germans about their experiences regarding financials in Munich. We're considering accepting an offer from my company that would take me back to the headquarters there ...

So, any info on e.g. the average rent for a small house outside the city that would be big enought to accommodate two bigg'uns, two kids, a labrador and a cat and maybe has a bit of garden around it would be really appreciated, other info of course too regarding other cost of living, maybe something like how much on average do you have to spend on food and/or other aspects of life.

Thanks a lot, any reply is highly appreciated!
Xpet.

That is a little high for "out of town" unless you mean warm, now on the outskirts, that is about right-cold. Feldmoching area which still has Ubahn/Sbahn access will drop those numbers by about 400-600 and still be warm miete.

Keep in mind, though, Xpet asked about a house and for four people. My apartment with two bedrooms on the outskirts of the outskirts is ~1000/month warm. A house with three bedrooms should be substantially more.

our house in the suburbs whith 3 bedrooms, bathroom, living room, dining room and kitchen plus garage and bit of a garden is 1400 (cold), just as a reference. Otside town could be a bit less although travel costs increase.

IPJ, you're in the new expansion zone and near Garching/Freising. From Unterschleißheim and west, those prices do drop. The only place that I know that has Ubahn service and is still reasonable for what he is wanting is Hasenbergl and Feldmoching and that is only because it is the "ausländer" area.
Now if your talking only Sbahn, then head towards Ebersberg (east) or FFB (west), but don't head south or towards the airport. There are deals to find everywhere, but less likely in those last two directions. We found a three bedroom house (double-house) in Feldmoching that was 1100 cold, but we were like 5th on the list and of course the first one took it.

What I don't get is that it's apparently quite expensive around the airport, when usually one would think that that's a low-rent area due to the air-traffic's noise- and other pollution??

Thanks for all the replies, looks like we'll try to aim for the s/e or s/w, work will be in the south (IF I get the job ...) but that seems to be the most expensive section of the 'burbs and outlying areas ...

Thanks, if I stumble upon any info that might be worth sharing I'll post it here. Xpet.

Hi all!!
I thank you in advance for your kind attention and courtesy!
I will be coming in Munich for a job at the end of June and I will spend six months.
I need some information about how much money I need to live in Munich: I pointed out that I need almost 300 euros/month for a bedroom, depending on the apartment (shared or not) and on the place, as usually expected; I think I will live in a shared apartment, hence I will be able to preserve a part of my earnings!!
How much do public transports cost? I think I'd wish to move freely in Munich, especially in the evening and during the week-end.
As Italian guy I'm quite sure I love good kitchen, thus how is cost of food?
And night life?
I think I said everything!
Bye and thanks again! cool.gif

most of your questions can be answered by using the search function (top right).

you can get rooms in shared appartments for €300 but be prepared to pay more. A single-room apartment will set you back a lot more than that.

for travel costs check out http://mvv-muenchen.de

food is generally as cheap or cheaper than Italy (except maybe espressi)

Depends where you are. I live less than 3kms from the runway, but I rarely hear anything because I live north of the airport and the planes take off/land east-west. I guess if you're south of the airport you also wouldn't hear much.

Can't really help you with costs because I pay 200 euros a month for a room in a student WG, probably not what you're looking for.

I'm gonna head over for a year or two, and I plan to look for a job when I get there. Now, I'm bringing about 10k with me to keep me going for a couple of months until I find a job. Do you reckon that will be enough for about 6 months until I find a job? And how much is it for rent for a flat/house just outside the city. Not too far away from the city centre though. What are the prices for food/beer etc. Is it cheaper than Ireland? Answer as many as you can for me guys, cheers

Hi Andy,

not there yet myself, but have looked into the same questions. Here's a collection of threads that discuss issues that might be of interest to you, there might be more though ...

I'd say much depends on your personal life style, the kind of accommodation you're looking for etc., my first reaction was 10k for 6 months? No way ... but as I say, this is from somebody who doesn't live in Munich, yet ... Good luck! Xpet.
