Favorite childhood recipes

eg. grilled peanut butter sandwich

Maybe nostalgia is getting the best of me, but I have cravings for odd childhood recipes (no I am not pregnant, nor is my wife). My favorite: grilled peanut sandwich. Easy to make:

Take chunky peanut butter, butter and two pieces of either white or brown bread. Go about it as if it were a grilled cheese sandwich, but use PB instead of cheese. In the frying pan let the bread become crispy as the PB. My two kids pass on it, but I love 'hem to this day.

PS. Naturally super chunky works best!

I used to have grilled peanut butter sandwiches as well! But with the smooth variety
Johnny English
Sounds like a proper healthy choice to me. Right up there with a battered Mars bar!

I assume it would be served with maybe Coca-Cola and a plate of fries on the side?

Which reminds me:
I was on rugby tour the other weekend. We discovered that we could make one of the boys "vomit on command" just by discussing eating cold baked beans straight from the tin. Boy did we have fun with that one.

Scottish Pie. Lamb chops.. Damn, why have I become a vegetarian?

Sloppy Joes! Cook chopped onions and ground beef in a frying pan, add 1/4 c. ketchup and 2 T. cheap yellow mustard. My kids love them. My husband can never remember the name, and calls the schlippy-schloppies.

I had nearly forgotten Sloppy Joes! Thanks for the receipt.

Main course: 1 slice of bread. One slice of process cheese. Unwrap cheese (this is important). Place cheese on bread. Place cheese and bread on plate. Put into microwave on HIGH for 25-30 seconds. Take out, fold in half and eat.

Dessert: Take one normal sized marshmallow. Place marshmallow on plate. Put into microwave on HIGH for 25-30 seconds. Watch marshmallow grow to enormous proportions. Take out and pull apart (using a fork, not your fingers, learnt that one) into threads that upon cooling are nice and crunchy.

Ah... elementary school and early physic experiments upon my lunch. I never ever complained about being a latch-key kid.

Something I learned at summer camp as a kid, cooked on stoves made out of cans:

Fold two pieces of bacon into v's, and put one on top of the other, one in an upside down V and one right side up. Take a piece of bread and rip a hole out of the middle and place it on top of the bacon. Crack an egg into the hole in your bread, and fry up the whole creation as one piece. Mmm.
randy
1 plastic cereal bowl
2-3 spoons of peanut butter
1 medium squirt of Aunt Jemima syrup

Stir well, enjoy your candy.

I used to do something similar except I stuck chocolate chips down inside for variation on a theme smile.gif

OMG I so wish you could get Pillsbury Choc Chip dough here! That is the best ever...forget making the cookies...dough is gone before one drop even hits the oven.

Talkin' about cookies...I could really go for some double stuff Oreos. Yum.
PES
I have seen oreos in a few places, but double Oreas can only be had Stateside? Pepperidge farms cookies are dearly missed, but Ben and Jerrys can be had at many tankstellers!
alala
actually, Nabisco's been branching out with the Oreos lately, coming up with mint, and peanut butter and all kinds of madness. But PES is right, they never have the right kind here. My SIL sent us a giant box of Oreos, Nutter Butters, and Kool-Aid last year. Yay for family.

Cut banana lenghtways down the middle. (do not remove peel)
Place slices of cheddar cheese on top. Grill until cheese is brown and bubbly.
Use peel as plate to eat banana from.

Enjoy!

Massive Sugar-Rush Glazed Cinnamon Toast

Put some powdered sugar in a bowl. Add a bit of milk until it makes a nice thick spreadable glaze. Add cinnamon to taste, and mix in.

Lightly butter two pieces of white bread. Spread the glaze on each piece of bread. Put bread in oven and broil for a few minutes (watch closely!), until the glaze starts to bubble and the bread toasts a little bit. Remove from oven, and enjoy the resulting sugar rush!

Always loved cinnimon toast, esp. with raison bread!

So much good food...

I could really go for a bread pizza.

One slice of bread. Spread on pizza sauce (or other tomatoe sauce as available), add cheese and vegi“s. (meat optional) Grill in oven till golden brown. Eat! biggrin.gif

Oh the things I miss. Good thing I will be going back in a few months. (Or is it? unsure.gif )

MMM! Cinnamon toast- taught my niece that one, drives my brother crazy, as she calls it Auntie Carm toast not cinnamon toast.

I loved smores- especially at the campfire- toasting marshmellow and squishing it between 2 graham wafers with a chunk of chocolate

Banana Boats- banana peeled but not taken out of peel, hollow out some of banana, then fill hollow with minimarshmellows and chocolate chips, then pull peel back up, wrap in tinfoil, toss in fire, then carefully with Fire Tongs, remove, and eat. Yummy!

Baked Apples, Cinnamon buns with maple syrup in coating (baba always made them).

PES - guess you must be American then biggrin.gif

Timmeh - you mean there is more than one type of the disgusting brown stuff??? That doesn't bear thinking about! The advert in the UK is definitely true - you either love it or hate it! It's got to be one of the top ten things that would put me off kissing a guy!
lemon
1 slice of bread spread with Miracle Whip and then Cheez Whiz. Melt under broiler, but keep an eye on it, as the Cheez Whiz can burn (yuck!) Try with (cooked) bacon, tomato and salt and pepper (or Cajun seasoning) on top too.

Yeah, the stuff in NZ & Oz is darker and not as runny. Tastes different too, I don't eat the UK stuff, only the Antip stuff.
You'd be put off kissing a guy cos what? He has marmity goodness in his cupboard? I fear by the time you discover that, it may already be too late. I can understand it if the guy had smeared it on his face and spooned half the jar into his mouth in preperation for a kiss, but I think people like that should be avoided regardless. Don't blame the marmite, it is my friend.

A slice of white bread, cut in small squares, with lots of milk and sugar.

Red
English muffin pizzas using Thomas' English Muffins and Polly-O mozzarella cheese... yum.

Microwaved sliced pepperoni (spicy salami, NOT those little green peppers): slice pepperoni into 1/2cm thinck slices. Arrange on a plate with plenty of paper towels underneath to catch the brigt orange oil that seeps out. Microwave on high for 1-1.5 minutes. Blot off pools of fat that form inside slices. Delicious!

Finally, my favorite dessert: microwaved M&M's (still eat these today). Getting the chocolate melted inside without burning it is a science. One needs to have a good feel for the microwave and a good ear. Place M&M's into a bowl. Microwave on high until you hear lots of crackling noises (this is the shells cracking). When the popping just begins to slow down, remove M&Ms. Do not wait too long, or your chocolate will burn and get all sandy in texture.
