This coming Monday is a public holiday, and the weather's apparently going to be quite nice, so how about a day out at the races?
There's a meet on at the
Galopprennbahn in Riem, sponsored by Erdinger Brauerei, starts at 13.30
We need to sort out a place to meet up and stuff, anybody got any bright ideas?
Probably best to meet in town and then go from there, because I seem to remember that it's quite a big place.
Some of us will be staying relatively sober, since we'll be going on to
The Arc afterwards for the pub quiz.
Anyway, post here if you fancy a good day out having a flutter

Are hats allowed? I've never been to the races here.

May 10 2005, 2:12 pm
I would've thought so - you can wear whatever you like

IIRC there were some people there in posh clobber and some people in jeans.

There's Aying beer and there nothing better going "giddy up" with a pony. I'll be there as long as I'm not too long in the "Labyrinth" Sunday night (local party for local people

)

It's a TOP day out with thrill, spills excitment and beer.
I'll dig out some posh looking gear and try and look like a gentlemen, maybe.

OK, I'll have a think on the frock front. I'm not stretching to a hat though.
Where are we meeting? Any ideas?

Sounds fab. I will not be dressing up, though. I have suits which look nice for work and Sunday goin' to meetin' but it's been ages since I've had a nice Southern gentleman's trouser and sport coat combo that would look appropriate at the track.

grtho: If I can trouble myself to say trousers rather than pants so as not to confuse my snooty English pals, surely you can figure out what I mean by sport coat. (insert whichever smiley indicates that I wasn't actually offended nor do I intend to give offense)
topsy: that's neuhasen plus two local people. Well, one local and one local sympathizer at any rate.

A sport coat is also called a blazer or a jacket. And that's about the limit of my sartorial vocabulary.

Love to come. What are the details please, and which paper would be best to pull out a form guide from? Bild never has them, either does the Süddeutsche when I've previously looked.

@ mightypies, good point, actually - we need to sort out where to meet.
Shall we meet in town somewhere at 12 and then mosey on down there?

Not sure about the rest of you, but Topsy, I've always been a big fan back home of the late morning 'boozy breakfast' beforehand - having a massive fryup somewhere accompanied with a few glasses of champers or weißbier, followed by a traveller to the track. Thoughts?
Topsy
May 11 2005, 11:18 am
It does sound very tempting, doesn't it.
I'm just a bit scared that starting that early would lead on to carnage... We'd have to be very strong and self-controlled.

Ok, hows this for a goer:
Andechser am Dom, weißwursts and beers from say 10ish?
Or does anyone know of any places opening early-ish (say between half nine and half ten) where a big fuck off breakky is on the cards?

Are you allowed to take a picnic? I am that clueless.
Topsy
May 12 2005, 8:36 am
I can't imagine that they're gonna frisk us on the way in.
I've been, but it was yonks ago. I know they had a food tent there, but I seem to remember there were long queues.

munich nags, gg's, donkeys, flutterageyou can take whatever you desire in...you wont be searched unless you have a skin and do some kind of salute..so you can take your own nosebag and liquid refreshments (if that way inclined)..
all you need is a ticket to get in. you can free tickets for entry from your friendly neighbourhood spark ass banking depositary anywhere in muc. or maybe this option has been removed since i got mine.
otherwise i think it costs around 9 eur to gain entry into this fine equine establishment.
i might be there if you want a bet with a bookie rather than some fcukin faceless machine.
grtho
May 12 2005, 11:50 am
€9 ! seems to have gone up a wee but. But aye, you can take a picnic hamper.
I might bring of my lovely homemade strawberry liqueur.
Betting via the automated tote is easy and everywhere , so you can nip over and put a bet on easy rather than hanging all the time in the bookies which has a very "South London" atmosphere - God I'm all posh today.
Topsy
May 12 2005, 11:52 am
According to their website it's 5€ to get in.
It's 10€ on a Gruppenrenntag, but there's only two of them, and next Monday's not one of them.

May 12 2005, 11:53 am
there aint any bookies as such, that would be too much fun
mightypies
May 12 2005, 11:53 am
Has anyone been there before? How's the bookies ring set up?
Topsy
May 12 2005, 11:54 am
But you can place a bet, though - you go to that little booth thing near the entrance.
Or has that gone now?
flogger
May 12 2005, 11:57 am
yes and you need an a level in rocket science to fill your tickets out..at least for all the bets worth doin i mean...the possible real earners.
however
if you are doing straight win or place bets its quite possible i suppose to work out, you just pen in the gap like a 2 yr old your donkey of choice, race nr, bet type and stake, nr of bets/horses backed etc..oh and inside leg measurement and bra size

The Arc has a whole bunch of free tickets that i'm sure he would be willing to give away as he can't make it himself...just pop down and ask.
grtho
May 12 2005, 12:59 pm
If you want to bet, bring a pen!
As mentioned above, just fill in the card, give to the cashier at the LOADS of tote desks and then go back to collect your winnings. You need to sort out the cards as if you have a bundle it is very easy to throw away a winning ticket!
You can also bet for a place that can be a life saver if that rampant stallion turns into a beach donkey at the first corner.
There are "real" bookies there to that offer fixed odds while on the tote it shifts.
Minimum bet is something like €3 so everyone can have a flutter.
The "real" bookies are more for those who really know what they are doing.

I think we are just going to meet at the
Ostbahnhof at 12 noon.
Let's just meet there, outside the Internationale Presse.
I'd love to start drinking early doors, but I'm a bit worried that I'd be to tiddled to do the quiz in the evening (and that would be just wrong).

May 16 2005, 10:39 am
ok so for those of us who are not able to get to
ostbahnhof by noon, how does one get to the races via train?
where will TTers be at the track?

May 16 2005, 10:42 am

S2 direction Erding
Get out at reim and head for the back of the train.. over the level crossings and its 200m infront of you..

Yeah, it was a good day - I didn't win one single bet, but Showem won just about every race. I think she's probably still there, counting her winnings
Definitely have to go again soon, though. It was good fun, even though my plan to become rich didn't materialise.
