The Hip Hop music scene

Hi there, I'm thinking of moving to Munich for the summer but i need to go somewhere with good hip hop!! I couldn't face a summer without good music. Does Munich have a good hip hop scene? Preferably more underground than 50 cent etc!! I'm into Jeru the Damaja, Nas, J5, Dilated peoples and i'm also really into turntablism. Anyone with any info on German Hip hop PLEASE let me know!!!

It's pretty rubbish here in Munich actually.
I can't stand the 50 cent etc. stuff, but I love the ones you cited for example. There used to be a club that played GOOD hip-hop on fridays, but they closed down recently. I can't think of another place that plays and decent stuff

You can get decent hiphop in Munich. I have been to Atomic Cafe when they are playing what you are looking for, and there are hiphop shows fairly often at Backstage and other locations. And the hiphop that you see here is usually of the indie variety. Turntablism as well. They had the german finals of the DMC (or was is ITF, I can't remember) here last year. And there are certainly plenty of vinyl shops that sell quality hiphop. That said... Munich is a soulless town and is almost void of any street or alternative creative culture, so you may feel disappointed if you are coming from somewhere in the states with a decent scene. It can be what you make of it though. I would say there is enough to get you through.

EDIT: just saw that you're coming from Ireland. In that case, you should be fine.

Thanks for the info, Is there a regular club/pub night that i could go to for good hip hop every week. I'm torn between going to Munich or Prague. In munich there's more of a chance of getting work i reckon, Prague is much cheaper and has a very good hip hop scene but i prob couldn't get work... I only want to go somewhere with good music, that really is the most important thing to me!

Props for knowing Jurassic 5. I mention J5 and people's eyes glaze over here.

i've gotten completely out of the funk/hip hop scene since moving to munich since the electro/house/techno side of things has a lot to offer and i love that stuff too.

would be great to see tribe called quest, or the like, pulling through town though

One of my favourite bands - Ugly Duckling played here in Munich at Funky Kitchen last week. It was pretty good!

There is a hip hop scene here, mostly centred around the snowboarding scene, so there are lots more parties around winter time, sponsored by all the snowboarding companies.

Dj Real is probably the biggest hip hop dj here and he puts on quite a few parties around the place, often featuring one of Germanys biggest hiphop djs - Stylewarz.

Ugly Duckling are wicked too... Pity i missed that! How often is there good hip hop gigs like that? Are pubs/clubs open to the idea of starting a hip hop night? Or do they prefer to go with Djs they know / recognise?

Well if you like a Tribe called Quest, they played in Munich not so long ago (saw a poster advertising for them, as well as Guy called Gerald (diff evening though) ).
Saian Supa Crew played here too, if you like French hip hop...

Yeah should be ok though, konzerte = concerts, clubs = clubs, hip hop = hip hop.. the band names will appear the same

Masta Ace is playing at "New" Backstage tonight (9 pm), tickets are dirt cheap at 12 € so it's a must for a starved Hip Hop fan here in Munich. You will find me there by the bar wearin a b-ball jersey and complaining that there are just kids coming to concerts here...

Anyone who is going? I will definetly be at the JMT & Non Phixion concert as it will definetly be the underground Hip Hop concert of the year hands down.

I am defintiely down for seeing JMT and Non Phixion. Thanks for bringing that show to my attention. I've been pretty down since I missed ugly duckling a few months back.

I've changed my plans and am only gonna be in munich for a few days in july... Roughly 16th ish for 3 days. If anyone knows of any good gigs please let me know. Cheers!

one of the best normal weekend hip hop nights is at Frankies its a rather small club at Schwabing but the best for great mixing an scratching of hip hop beats. also the garden does great hip hop nights as well generally mid week but always cracking beats.

Will there be a hip hop gig in Frankies this weekend? I'm gonna be around maybe this Friday and definately this Saturday...

Just ensure that they do not have a 'private party' going on. Usually it is a pain to enter then. I must say though Frankies has gone downhill over the years.

Hey all! I'm coming back to Munich for a few days at the end of November. 25th - 28th i think... Anyone know of any hip hop gigs going on around this time?
