How to contact the tax office

How to check on the status of returns

I filed my tax return (late) through a tax advisor. I had exchanged a number of clarification questions with the tax authority via the post, but now have not heard anything from them for several months. We have subsequently moved out of Germany to the UK.

My tax advisor has not been that helpful in sorting this out. Does anyone know who I need to contact in the German tax authority to check on the status of my tax return?

Thank-you,

Chris

Any letter you have had from the Finanzamt will usually detail the name, address and direct-dial phone nunmber of the official handling your case. If not then you need to write to your responsible Finanzamt simply quoting your tax number (from your tax card) - any letters are then re-directed internally to the person handling or responsible for your case.

If you believe your tax advisor has been negligent then you should claim against him, or find another advisor to pick up the case. If you can show there has been an element of negligence you can mitigate any penalties the Finanzamt may impose as a result of late submission. My advisor often simply admits he was slow (even when he wasn't) to avoid bad feeling and subsequent additional costs...

I filed for my Tax-refund for last year and have not recieved any news or Money yet. How much time does it take to get the refund? Did any of you get the refund for the financial year 2005 already. Any means to check the status of my application?

2-3 months is average for those that are quick off the mark at the beginning of a new year. Ironically, it's a quicker turnaround for slowcoaches. My recent 2003 return was sorted in 2 weeks. Why not call 'em and ask status?
