Anyone fancy getting a little group together to do some gentle hiking next Saturday?
For many it's a long weekend so worth getting out of the City to head up to one of the huts for lunch.
I've got a car so can take another 4. Although I know of a few nice hikes, the location is open.

If I'm not working then I would be well keen.
I love hiking.
As long as it's not toooo strenuous

@Topsy---no Zugspitz and only if the weather looks good so more about the fun than heart attacks.

This sound nice. Been itching for a good hike. If I'm in town I'm in. Have a car too, room for one (top down if the weather's nice, natch

).
Sounds great, Shaggy. Don't have a car here so I rely on the SBahn, though as I've only been here a month I haven't been anywhere outside of the city yet. It would be great to go somewhere with a group, not finding going out much fun on my own, not used to it. Could do with some buddies to show me the sights. Where would you be leaving from?
Shaggy
May 1 2005, 5:13 pm
@alys- I think we are at 2.5 cars so far and about 8-10 probables so should be fine.
Will confirm details on Thursday.
whatever it is I am up for it...

Could be good for the first Alpine hike of the year. Where are yous heading for?
Shaggy
May 2 2005, 4:52 pm
Hi Jeeves- we've a few idea's about location but open to suggestions...ideally 4-5 hours hike up and down with a nice hut at the top.
Sounds great Shaggy! How would I know where to go, when and how to recognise the people I am going with??? I have Friday off as well as Thursday so this is the perfect day assuming the weather holds.

May 2 2005, 5:36 pm
@Alys- there r quite a few non posted ppl interested so will post details on Thursday.

If you don't mind a 100-mile/1 hour 40 minute drive, there's the Zillertal circuit in Austria that makes for 11km/5-6 hours of easy hiking.
"It's an immensely scenic walk, offering wonderful views over the turquoise waters of the reservior to the ice-capped peaks at its eastren end. ...though the route involves 850m of ascent and descent, the path is well-graded and generally easy". (Lonely Planet guide).

Apple: Bring a waterproof jacket
Genie: Might be a bit high for this time of year? (Still snow around)
Otherwise I'd suggest not driving too far. It's the first hike of the year for me and I need to get the bones moving first.

I agree Jeeves..OG has suggested a decent route near Starnberg.
worst case, if the weather isn't too great then maybe head to Alte Mare near Bad Tolz or something.. (water leisure centre... slides and stuff).. or?
Just wanna get out of the city for the day.
Are there really mountains near Starnberg?
I would love to come along and have a car, too. I don't mind too much about the weather, but if it's raining cats and dogs,
alpamare would certainly be a great alternative.

May 3 2005, 8:25 am
Mountains near Starnberg? Depends how you define "mountain". Or "near" for that matter. But on the whole I tend to a "no" to that. And no mountain, no mountain hike.
Shaggy, OG, you want to PM me the suggested route?
Topsy
May 3 2005, 9:04 am
why don't you post the suggested route, then we can all see it

Here we go...seems ideal. (courtesy of Helena)
look for Tegernsee - Neureuthaus - Gindelalm - Kreuzberg - Tegernsee
About 5 hours total easy hiking with good eating at the top.
Jeeves
May 3 2005, 11:57 am
Looks good to me. A 5 hour hike is a nice gentle introduction to the season. It stays low so there should be no great problems with snow. And it's accessible by public transport if nec.

May 4 2005, 9:59 am
This is a really lovely walk, with lots of variation, forest, open areas, marshy parts...lots of watering holes too. The whole (circular) walk takes max 5 hours (walking time).
...There is however the option (for non-regular walkers) to simply go up to Neureuthaus (about one hour, lovely view, good food) and then down...walking time about 2 hours. This can be followed by a relaxing beer at the hofbrauhaus in Tegernsee.
I might go for the second option...as I wouldn't mind getting back for the 'Lange Nacht der Musik' in München...
Shaggy
May 4 2005, 5:45 pm
Ok, so we know where we're heading...now to figure out logistics.
Meet up
saturday 9am (should be back by 4ish)
outside Gunther Murphy's...
Ppl- Still quite a few maybe's but numbers are about 10-15 total. If you're on the thread can I get you to to post/pm a confirm by tomorrow afternoon..
Cars- 2 definites (Onni & me) and 2 more possibles. Anyone else coming who has wheels? Persimmon? Kiki68?, Itchy&Scratchy?
Jags will also be coming along...
BTW, what is the other option if we get short of cars? Sbahn, RE, etc...??
Genie
May 4 2005, 6:15 pm
BOB goes directly to Tegernsee.
Edit: That said, could we also make a meeting point in Tegernsee if there are people going with public transportation?

I do have wheels but am anything but keen on driving into the centre of Munich on a Saturday morning. Personally I'd prefer to take the train anyway - the BOB goes right to Tegernsee.
Shaggy
May 5 2005, 8:56 am
@Jeeves- waiting for numbers.. may manage in 2 cars.
Worst case, we'll do the BOB and pick ppl up from there. Can you post train times?

Latest weather forecast for the area tomorrow (taken from the Bayerischer Rundfunk, which I generally find to be the most accurate) suggests it will be like today only cooler, with rain getting heavier in the afternoon. The snow line is set to sink to 1200 m.
@Jeeves/Shaggy: is it still a good idea to go?
I'm an almost definite, but with rain in the afternoon...
Shaggy
May 6 2005, 9:10 am
Risk of a bit of rain is normal at this time of the year. We'll be leaving at 9am so have at least the morning... if the weather looks dodgy we can always do the shorter 2 hr route.
Pls pm me if you drop out so we can sort out cars.
Or Alpamare... ?(see previous thread)

-Do the 5 hour hike with hut at top
-Do the 2 hour with hut at top then trip to Alpamere for those who want to (bring a towel and swim suit and we'll chuck in the cars jic).

Hiya guys - sorry for the late notice, but I don't think I'll be walking. My car handbrake has seized and I think I'm going to have to spend tomorrow hitting it with a big hammer. I'm going to have a go at it now... if I manage to fix it then I'll be there, if I'm not don't bother waiting for me.
