My soon to be employer has put me up in a temporary residence on Ruppertstrasse (# is in the teens) which is allegedly "centrally located." Can anybody tell me what this area is like? maps.yahoo.de is currently beschäftigt. Of critical importance is the proximity to quality drinking establishments.
Arriving on the 6th and counting the seconds between now and then...

Rupertstrasse eh? >shudder< Well, it will be handy for getting your papers done, as it's across the street from (might as well get used to trying to say it now) the Kreissverwaltungsreferat. If you are here until at least late September, you will be happy to hear that you are staggering distance from
Oktoberfest. Quality drinking around there, hmm, dunno. Cafe Blue is close by, at the top of Implerstr. One of the fun things to do though is to check them all out yourself.
Of course, nothing will be open on the day you arrive, as it's a public holiday, but bars might be.

Oh crap, now you've got me nervous. Can you go into details?
I should only be there for about 2 months or so at which time I should really find a more permanent place for all my crap.

Haha! Just pulling your chain.

It's pretty central, nothing to worry about. Close to a train line, but I don't think it's too loud. Really, not kidding, just remembering from living near there myself.

I'm going the KVR tomorrow to try and extend my residence permit. Really crazy, when I first came here, they only gave me 3 years. When I went last time though, it was hell trying to find where I had to go not speaking German.
Hopefully my German is upto the job this time, its far quicker if you can speak German, otherwise it's a bloody long time hanging around.

Wow, you guys are really helping to quelch my moving fears

Thankfully I've got a native helping me out at the KVR as my German is non-existant.

DrivinWest,
try the map at stadplandienst.de. to find your address.
then go to munichtoday.de for a so-so map on what you can find in your area (besides Theresienwiesen). It's generated by the Mr. Lodge website, but there's good enough
general (if not entirely accurate) info about all the different neighborhoods on the Mr. Lodge site. If your German's good,
www.ganz-muenchen.de is also a good site for founding out what's around you.

pepper, the KRV's easy to figure out with only basic German. For your residence permit, stay on the ground floor and look for the hallway/area corresponding to your last name (A-C practically right inside the front door; anything after N is a bit of a hike). When you get to that area, take a number from the machine and watch the digital display to tell you the door you must enter.
Hope your last name begins with R. I've seen the same woman on all three of my trips there in the last month and she's super nice, helpful, and speaks English.

So, looks like I have a long hike then, as my surname starts W. Last time, I just got someone who could not speak English, and then when someone who was available to speak English, they were in a bad mood. But my German is a lot better now, so should not have too many problems getting by with some broken German.

Substanz ain't bad--younger crowd, though.
It's right across from the KVR--don't let them fool you, the KVR makes Americans understand Kafka. Take a native German speaker. It's near-indespensible. My wife got mis-classified and had to take a Bavarian down there to yell at them to get them to change the permission to stay to resident status. Clearly, you have to know the language.
Also, right near there is Skandal, a good shop to pick up your first pair of lederhosen (or dirndl, depending upon your sex and predispositions...)
Lived at nummer 20 when I first moved here...it's centrally located, on 2
U-Bahn lines, and a pretty easy walk from the Zentrum if you miss the last one at night.

I don't get this thing with the KVR and um-, an-, and abmelden. I've been here a year and a half now and I would say have been detained not more than 1 hour in total. Aufenthaltserlaubnis: in and out in less than 10mins, anmelden 15mins, ummelden 15 mins. Was I just lucky or something?

Depends on what time you go, your last name, (as always, mood of the bureaucrat "serving" you).
A lot of people think the best time is first thing in the morning. Which is why there are A LOT of people there. I've always gone around 11 and gotten in and out lickety split.
Really, it's not that bad. It's just that going there for whatever reason is an inherently PITA task.

I've just got back from KVR to extend my permit, and my surname starts W, and it took 45 minutes. 40 minutes just waiting and hanging around and 5 mintues filling out a form.
Its only open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8am to 12pm, then on Tuedays from 14:00 to 18:30.
