Mexican foodies take Berlin's taste buds south of the border - Germany

The Local
Three friends - a Mexican, a Texan, and an Australian - have finally brought authentic Mexican food to Berlin. The Local sat down with them to find out how they did it.

Before Maria Bonita set up shop in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district, the only authentic Mexican for sale in the German capital was produced by a lone man who hand-pressed tortillas in his own kitchen and delivered them by bicycle.

His name and website were whispered breathlessly between spice-starved expats indignant over the bland and bungled restaurant imitations, where ketchup with onion bits passed for salsa, pre-packaged tortillas gummed up their guts, and kraut - that's right, kraut - rounded out the garnish.

Cool story.. Anybody eaten there? Worth going out of the way to get there if on a day-trip to Berlin? I could go for some good Mexican...

I'll definitely check it out next trip to Berlin. About time!

Those guys rule. The food is as good as the atmosphere. Worth a stop even if you're only in Berlin for a few hours (I recommend the carnitas or the shrimp/fish tacos).
But let's not forget our buddies at Dolores too! Kick-ass California burritos that are also worth a try (Chipotle chicken). Both places have made my life in Berlin so much better (and it was pretty good to begin with).

Â"Mexicans can be lazy Â- I hate to use a cliché Â- but this food is labour intensive,Â" he says.
Nice bit of bigotry here. One can say that about ANY group of people.
Perhaps one day Mr. Manneck will take a sociology class. This is an intro topic.

As a German American - Mexican being lazy is an ignorant statement! I have found, as a group, the people residing in the US being of Latin American heritage are the hardest working people I have had the privilege to work with. I am not speaking of the illegal immigrants; but I am speaking of people who work harder and longer than any other generally identified group of people.

He was making a joke. Saying they're "the hardest working people" is just as racist as the other way around.
Their food rocks.

This is exciting! Dolores is the only place I know. All the other "Mexican" restaurants are so offensively bad. I will definitely check it out. As for those so sensitive about a Mexican guy calling Mexican people lazy. You need to take it in context. We (Mexicans) can do that to our own culture. Maybe you guys need a sociology class. Let me guess, you're all guilty feeling white people aren't you? Of course it was a joke and juvenile of him to say, but he's young and that's his prerogative.

Nice story, but I haven't yet encountered a lazy Mexican. They are workaholics at unfortunately low pay.

Mexicans have a self-deprecating sense of humor( and a wonderful sense of taste), so I don't think Ramsés meant any wrong by his comment. I've been living among them for many years, and I've found them intelligent, warm and fun as well. To my tastebuds, there is no better food than Mexican food with hundreds of tastes and variations. Cheers and good luck to Maria Bonita.
