We have wireless LAN available...
*

Wirelss LAN now has Internet? Last time I was there , you had the wireless router but you still needed a DSL provider.

You now surf wireless?

Thanks for any clarification
Hazza
It's all up and running - has been for about a month or so now
parnell
My lappy has a wireless card on it but I have no idea how to set it up...maybe you geniuses can rig it up. But remember that we still can't play Starcraft on a hacked copy over the net. CodeRed you have the full version which we could install spawns off of tho. Correct me if my head is in my ass.
Jawn
wired and wireless is my job, so I should be able to get it running for you..

Haz, do you have a WEP Key on the wireless (password for laptops)?

I think we will play starcraft on a separate LAN, through my switch. not on the internet

Who is bring starcraft.

Also bring your mp3's, any other games.. i have some giveaways as well
parnell
I'll bring 100 gigs of movies and mp3s on an external HD for those interested... I have a nicely working hacked 100MB copy of Starcraft , so no bother there.
This is looking so sweet , shame DW can't make it.
Jawn
I have never played starcraft... so I need a 15 minute tutorial
parnell
No bother... I thought CodeRed had played a little bit back in the day...still it's an easy enough game to learn.
CodeRed
i played it through back in the day. but that day is long gone. smile.gif

if you have done some real time strategy it shouldnt be a prob.

i have a starcraft cd here which can install pawns, but i think last time we didnt manage to hook up over the router. but this was most likely due to our stupidity.

so do we have a deal at 8.30pm?
Jawn
I will go there about 7ish to check out their interenet and do a small setup.

I have played Empire Earth, Civilization and Rise of Nations.. so maybe I can pick up starcraft fairly quickly.. I'll probably get my ass kicked but at least I'll know better how to play the next time.
parnell
I'm in for 8.30 but will prolly come 15 mins early just to get the hook up right.
CodeRed
okay will be there at 8ish. and will try to make Baran be there as well so we can install the crap etc. Baran has never played it before either so we can make teams according to experience.
profundo
I will stop by to see what the hubbub is all about. I could run back up and grab my laptop too, seein as how I live one block from The Arc and the little lady is working tonight.

Laters.
Jawn
I am at The Arc typing this message. So nice to have internet here. Thank you Arc!

Network is setup. I just put out a small hub (8 ports) 100mb.

All are welcome!
parnell
Well a truly killer night was had by those who attended with the neccessary hardware... we discovered that the more modern games such as Warcraft 3 run much better on modern hardware than the older ones... kinda makes sense I guess... fired up for the next session already! Now that we know what's involved we reckon we'll be much better placed for it. Many thanks to Jawn who helped out with the setup enormously - we couldnt have done without ya man. Also thanks to CodeRed for having the cojones to rush back home to pick up a copy of Warcraft 3 since Starcraft proved too problematic.
CodeRed
No worries. Now we just need a big block of ice to cool down profundo's heat machine and we're all set to chop each others heads off in WCIII.

Thanks again to Jawn. You the man.

Let's set a date within the next 4 weeks to do this again and then come prepared with everyone having a set of games already installed. Let's make that one shooter, one real time strategy (could stick with Warcraft) and maybe one racer.

Cheers.
parnell
Let's get agreement on the games then - which ones to download ? I mean the free uncracked trial demo special offer versions of course (wink). I know nothing other than real time strategy.
Jawn
I had a great time despite all the problems. We know better now!

Take a look at Rise of Nations

http://www.microsoft.com/games/riseofnations/default.asp

You can download a trial if you want (194MB)

You can buy this game new at Media Markt for around 39 I think
Although I am not sure if the play is then in German or English. Obviously some of us may prefer german. I suggest the best way to get this game is on Ebay. There is one that will end in 7 hours from now. It is around 6 quid right now. Probably will go for 12-14 quid at the end of the auction.

I was going to try and get this game from my friend at Microsoft but he wont send multiple copies.

As for the First Person Shooter, The older Countersrike mod on Half Life will probably work on our laptops. The new Counter strike will work if you have a good mobile video card and lots of RAM.

Another possible strategy game that would rock is Empire Earth II

See

Throw out some more games?
Jawn
Ok I really want to try to play this games on the next LAN Night

Rise of Nations (still need to buy or find)

Alternate - Rome Total War (just bought on ebay and arrived today) Who has 64 mb video cards on their laptops?

Alternate game

Counter-Strike 1.6
DrivinWest
I second CS 1.6. It shoudl work just fine on pretty much any hardware you've got. The CD I'm looking at right now says a PII 450mhz and 128MB RAM is the min. I think most can swing that.
3 Lions
Just speaking to DW today, for those of us who dont have a laptop and dont want to look like an arse dragging their PC down to The Arc or TB. What if we get one of us to act as a dedicated server? That way we have a central IP we can on log on to at some time.

CS 1.6 works for me. I have a PIII 700Mhz, 256MB RAM, 32MB graphics card, so it wont handle any of the newer games.
CodeRed
Rome- Total War rocks. I still have it on my PC here, but I thinkit requires some graphics power.

I'd also like to try Warcraft 3 again, after all it is said to be the best real time strategy out there, even now.

I've never played CS 1.6. How about America's Army? Free download from aaotracker.com and a great game but everyone would have to try it out at thome first to get used to it.
CodeRed
how about doing this again this wednesday with a holiday next day??
parnell
I'm good for Wednesday I think. I got CS 1.6 but apparently I have to pay something with this steam deal. Fuckin crazy bullshit huh !? America's army I can download tonight ... Jawn you technical genius you , are u ip for it ?
Jawn
I cant make it tonight unless you wanted to go really late and come all the way out to Augsburg smile.gif

Hope to catch you soon though.
parnell
Spoke to CodeRed last night ... this ain't gonna happen tonight it seems.
CodeRed
hey, interests seems to have waned...are we gonna do this again? I am practicing my skills with the Orcs so you better watch out. smile.gif
3 Lions
If someone can sort me out with a copy of CS 1.6 and an IP address for me to connect to, then I'm in for the next one? I'll speak to DW later, I know he's got a copy.
parnell
RIGHT!

The shit is about to hit the LAN!

We have three willing and unable gamers (CodeRed , theBarron and meself) all set to go on Sunday/Monday... we need more!
Inflatablewoman
Whats the deal on location?
parnell
@ IW
We were in The Arc last time and the set-up there is good... definitely need LAN cables and if you know your way around networking then that's a plus. I#m happy with the location if Hazza and the others are.
Inflatablewoman
How have you been getting your stuff there? Or are you just carting a laptop?
parnell
lappies all round my man ... we try to pick games which are not state of the art to allow us to get away wit it.
Inflatablewoman
dont have one. sad.gif

Bugger, dont much fancy carting my pc over either. And I would kick your booties too. :|
parnell
We accept your humble defeat with grace
Inflatablewoman
I shall investigate borrowing a laptop.
parnell
meh

Inflatablewoman
Damn it. I need a laptop.
3 Lions
Or, we just need the IP address to link to and we're at home and away.
parnell
Nah mate , come down one night and you'll see - true ownage demands that you hear the squeals from your opponents as you crush them mercilessly.

Hi All,

I am a newbie to TT, so be gentle smile.gif

I am too a gamer, but in the last two years been very few times online (gaming) and two times on a LAN party.
While reading this thread (from the beginning) I thought to suggest something:
From my experience most players belong to one of two groups:
1.(realtime) Strategy games (starcraft, spacecraft, warcraft, civilization etc)
2. Shoot'em up - first person: (CS,DOD,RavenSheild,ButtleField ,DOOM, Unreal, etc...)
(for LAN parties I am nor the second type, since I like the team play)

Although many like to play both, most will prefer one type as a "theme" for a LAN session.
So my first suggestion would be, to make a poll, and see which kind( if any, after all, i might be wrong on this) is preferred.
(Maybe one LAN session could be one kind, and the next the other?)
Second, make clear before the session, which games will be played(also poll?), so people get time to prepare (install etc) BEFORE the session, so that during the session it self, it will only be about setting up the network...

Also, I think you should consider playing online (internet) or not.
If there are enough people (say from 10 upwards) it might be better to NOT play online.
Since in the local LAN you have more control to set the server as you like, and dont have to be bothered with pings, cheats, kiddies and stuff like that...

I personally dont have HL2 yet.
I just dont have the heart to spend 50€ on a PC game (even more so now, since I hardly play lately)
But, for the others I have seen here that didn't play CS before (and asked about it), all you need is a legal copy of HL1, and you can get that either on ebay or Amazon for prices like 10-20€...
Then all you need to do it register on the steam engine - but it wont cost you anything.
The down side of steam is that it makes you buy the games.
The up side is that no one can steal your code once you registered it on steam.

I am up for a session if it will be mostly CS,DOD and Battlefield and RavenSheild.
I can bring with me a HUB for 4 PC's if needed.

I hope you didn't all fall asleep while reading this long post...

Cheers
Dani.
parnell
Hi Daniel ,
amongst the few peeps here I know , only CodeRed could lay any stake to the claim of being a serious gamer ... I played a lotta Starcraft in college ... that's about it. We currently don't have the numbers to break up into two groups BUT learning a new game amongt new chums is often a great evening's entertainment. If you have your games on a uh ... transferable format then I'm sure we'd all load em up greedily like the hogs we are. Why not join us this weekend ? OINK!
Jawn
I am a little fuzzy on the details. Where, When?? I am available Sunday/Monday. I really want to try one of the newer strategy games but I guess no one has checked out Microsofts Rise of Nations. There is also the new Empire Earth II which just came out. Warcraft III is easy for us to play but I never want to see Starcraft on my PC again smile.gif

Gimme details...
parnell
Jawn
LMAO @ Starcraft...sorry bout that - my fault - I downloaded the Rise of Nations demo ... wasnt THAT impressed ta be honest. If we can run it and you can bring it we will play it.
Jawn
For those of you with full on desktop PCs and a few extra bucks lets play Counterstrike Source online. No need for us to get together, no need to setup a server as there are many to choose from in Germany.

I will come later with more details.

www.steampowered.com is where you can buy and start to download Counter Strike Source/HL2
Jawn
when, where??
parnell
Arc unless we have other nominations, Sunday/Monday will be decided by close of business today.
Jawn
i assume you want me to bring all the geek network stuff or are you good?
parnell
I dunno really , perhpas best to bring what's convenient but i guess just what worked last time would cut it down a lot.
