Climbing - Weekly outdoor climb

Who is interested?

I am probably getting ahead of myself as all my gear is still somewhere between Japan and here, but I am itching to get out there and climb. Are there any people/groups going out weekly or however often as yet? Who/when/where, etc. Spring is here, and I need to climb!

Indoors is an option too, but outdoors is definately a priority when the weather is right.
jeremy
Only rock I know of is sport climbing near Lenggries. There ara a few crags there.
interplanetjanet
If you've got a car, my hubby and I are up for it. We've got trad gear, too. We hardly ever make it out to the climbing gym anymore, because it's on the other side of town and is expensive on our student budget. Outdoor climbing, though, we're definitely up for, but we're both a bit out of shape and would need to start again at lower grades to build up some muscle tone.
quarblotz
i'm interested, but i don't have any gear or muscle tone. keep posting more details and i'll think about getting a pair of shoes, if you promise we can start slow... smile.gif
chewy
I'm game if we can get this started. I leave in July so either have to start now or sent shoes back sad.gif
Wildflower
Hi, haven't made it outdoors yet this year, but climbed quite a few single pitch routes near Munich last year, there is an area with grades to suit all levels smile.gif at Bad Heilbrunn ( off the Garmisch park autobahn, near Penzberg, way) theres's also more difficult routes dry.gif grades 6 and above at Kochel ...and there a really interesting bouldering crag near the Isar at Buchenhain !
All bolted routes ... huh.gif
interplanetjanet
I've been to the wall at Buchenhain. Very nice, if it's convenient for you. Haven't been to the other, though. I think I'll have to stick to those below 6 while I build my strength back up.

(yeah, they really love to bolt here...)
MysteryMan
It depends on what type of area it is. If it is a klettergärten then the place is seen as a training crag anyway and everything is bolted to death. Go to a wilder crag though or a specific climbing area (Frankische Schweiz or Elbsandsteingebirge) and it can be patchy AND there may by a local ethic that is religiously stuck to. In the Frankische Schweiz for example only the really hard stuff is bolted at all, and most of the first bolts are 3-5m from the ground. Elbsandsteingebirge in contrast has NO bolts and no regular pro (i.e. nuts, wires and friends) is allowed (only knots). The alpine stuff (which is what I am / was into) or multi pitch can be very differntly bolted according to route. Some are bolted every 2 metres or so, to death around the cruxes etc. etc. Some other stuff has no bolts, some with bolts at the crux etc. etc. Buy a guide book.

PS: I recommend the Kaisergebirge.
colin stewart
Yeah, I am up for it - either sport or trad.
tinap
Hey all,

Good, there is interest. What day works better for each of you, Saturdays in general, or Sundays. I prefer to get an early start (meet up in Munich or start/finsih pick ups for around 8 or 8:30, so we can be on the rock early, then climb as long as we want, enjoying the beautiful mornings.

No worries about no muscle tone and no gear. Harnesses are easy to share, as are shoes, until you find out if you really like the sport enough to spend the money.

Speaking of which, we can start earlier in the season if someone will share gear with me. I need a large harness (do they make xL and xxl?). As for shoes I would need European size 42 ish, anyone in that size range?

I don't mind bolted at all, in fact I enjoy leading bolted but am scared to death to lead trad. I also enjoy top roping when the situation requires setting up and then rappelling down first (abseiling for some languages). I think it would be great to get a group of us out there, whoeever has gear, bring it, and maybe we can set up a few different ropes so that everyone has something available at their level. I am more than happy to be the organizer, and provide a car that seats 4, but depending on how many want to go, we might also need another vehicle.

After I get an idea of how many are intersted, and whether Sat or Sun works best, we'll plan further. I'll do some research into where around here is good. I have heard of a few ideas other than those you have given so far.

Who is up for this next weekend, the 30th or 1st? The next weekend I am out of town so the next possible weekend is the weekend of May 14/15. If that works for you also, insetad, whatever, let me know.

Climb on!!!

Tina

bernucha
Hi everyone there!
I am interested but i must say i have no idea AT ALL sad.gif (plus, no muscles and no equipment). if you still think i can join the group, i will be more than happy.
anyway, for me it`s imposible this weekend (30.04 / 01.05), but i have no problems any other sunday.
cheers,
B
interplanetjanet
@tinap

My husband wears a 42, but his shoes are shot (holes). If he gets some new ones before you do, then perhaps he can share.
chewy
Saturdays best for me, no problems getting up early. only equipment here is shoes (37 ish-small anyway). Don't mind what we climb as long as we do!

Don't have a car and too young too hire one, so i'll leave the transport up to someone else.

Unfortunately, we're not available this weekend, but we'll be happy to join you on the next one!
Wildflower
Hi all,

Yep Im happy to join some outdoor climbing ...yeeeh haa
this weekend ...planning to mountain bike Saturday, Sunday is a possibility?

most other weekends in may, sat or sun is good with me...so count me in !

I have some gear, spare pair of shoes about 38/39 if that helps...not sure about how they might smell though dry.gif

anyways, hope we can get out soon, thanks for posting this one tinap !!! good plan, as summer is just being ...its to be hot ! damn hot ! this weekend ?!
smile.gif
tinap
It is looking more like the weekend of May 14/15. There is some talk about meeting next Tues at the gym to check out knot tying and belay skills before we hit the great outdoors. How many of you can/plan to be at Thalkirchen next Tues (May 3) from 19:00 to do this? We can also then pool ideas on who has what gear to share, where to go, etc.

The other though is if InterplanetJanet and her husband are available this weekend, and we have enough gear between us (I have zero), we can easily go somewhere this weekend, watch them belay, and then if we feel comfortable with their skill, we will each climb accordingly. We can also test each other's belay skills by having two belayers, for example IPJ belays her husband, I am on belay behind her so anyone can watch me, and then I would be considered qualified. Can you picture that in your head?

Who leads? That is important too, won't do us too much good to get out there and have not one able to lead. I can lead 8's, need gear. Sunflower, do you lead? IPJ and husband? Who has a rope? Who has quickdraws?

Tina
interplanetjanet
Hey, sorry, but as per my previous post above, I'm not available this weekend. sad.gif

I've only led a couple times and would definitely not be comfortable doing so after so long without climbing at all. My husband, however, is an excellent leader and one of the very few people I'm 100% confident in with respect to setting up belays with trad gear. He's been climbing a lot longer than me, but we're both decent climbers when in shape. My most difficult climbs were probably a US 10b and an Australian 21, both on toprope. His are higher, though neither of us could do them now, I'm sure. I've never climbed any multi-pitches higher than a US 8 or 9 or so, and only following. My husband has led lots, though I'm not sure what his high limit is - surely not as high as before now that we haven't been climbing in a long time.

We've got a new 60m rope, draws, slings and trad gear (cams and nuts).
Tom17
Would love to come along soon... I cant make this weekend though.

I have been with IPJ and hubby before and had fun, but I dont have a climbing partner so I would be an odd one out.

Love to lead but havent done any outdoor stuff yet, would love to give it a go!
chewy
Unable to make next tuesday as i have a visitor in town. Otherwise i'd be game.
tinap

I got my gear, I got my gear, let's go!!!

Anyone on for this weekend? I have all the gear we need, but would need at least one more person with a harness so people without a harness could come along. No one needs to worry about being the odd man out, because throughout the season people tend to pair up with partners in their skill and interest range, so you won't be odd man out for long.

Tina
greg
I'm up for some climbing. Got my own harness and shoes and some metal gear but no rope. am free this saturday and probably some of the following weekend. not really that good (and a bit out of practice) but very keen to get onto the rocks.
tinap
OK, let's do it! Who else is up for Saturday? Where should we go???
Wildflower
Hi , when and where this weekend?

Im planning to mountain bike one of the days, but possible free the other ?? not sure which yet! huh.gif

Will be free weekend of 15th/ 16th also. smile.gif

I have a harness and am a competent belayer, okay with leading easier stuff , but have not lead outdoors for a while ! also got a rope 50m ?! yeah not so good for here, was sufficient for a single pitch in Scoltand.Got some quick draws and trad gear ...and one pair of spare climbing shoes ( size 38/39)
I will be at Thalkirchen as usual on Tuesday anyway from 7pm.
Bannockburn
Tinap,

Wildflower & I are heading down to TK tonight from 18:30 onwards if you are interested in joining? smile.gif

Did you find anybody for tomorrow?
tinap
Bannockburn -- thanks for the Thalkirchen invite. Would have joined you but noticed the invite too late.

RE CLIMBING SAT APRIL 30

Haven't had much response, and no one has contacted me directly, so I guess it isn't happening. Sorry if I got anyone's hopes up. For those of you REALLY wanting to go, get ahold of me and maybe we can get somewhere Sat afternoon. I will be offline from 8 on, but will be back on in the morning.

Definately want to get out there the weekend of the 15/16 though.

Tina

Ok so is there a plan for the 15/16th? I need to go climbing
tinap
Yes, we are going, just need to figure out where. Let's work on planning for Saturday.

I need help with ideas on where to go. I dont' know the area. Here are some suggestions I have come across:

Frankenjura, 2 hours north, 4,000 climbs
Kochel
Bad Tolz
Oberamergau
Gardasee in Italy (3 hours, maybe for a weekend trip)
Near Lengries
Buchenhein
Bad Heilbrunn
Stenwald (http://www.sportclimbing.de/search_small/neu.php3?Go=neu&Tab=Steinwald_Fichtelgebirge)

So we need a place, who is going, transport (I have a car can fit 3 more, maybe tight), and also a guide book for where we are going with the routes. I can pick up the guidebook if necessary.

Might be easier to go somewhere someone coming along has already been so we don't waste our first outing wandering aimlessly.

I am gone May 5-10, so will be out of reach then.

Let's get this planned. Don't care where we go, but let's go!!!

Tina

Who's in? Will welcome any or all input.
interplanetjanet
Hubby and I are definitely in, but we have plans for brunch on the 15th, so the 16th is better for us for a full day trip. A 1/2 - 3/4 day on the 15th is good, too, after brunch. We don't have a car, so it would be great if we can squeeze in with you in yours.

I propose that, if we end up doing this regularly, we plan to have our summer climbing culminate in an expedition down to Gorges du Verdon at the end of the summer. Great climbing and lakes to swim in. There's a great little campground in the nearby tiny village of La Palud owned by a guy who rambles at you in French even when he knows you don't understand a word, and when I was there last it was only 4 Francs/night (or perhaps I actually did the conversion in my head, and it was actually $4/night).

Ooh, I'm starting to get really excited about climbing. smile.gif
tinap
Chewey, Wildflower, Jeremy, Quarblotz, Colin aka Banockburn, Bernuca, Tom 17, Mystery Man, Greg and anyone else,

Are you available Sun the 16th for a full day of fun in the shade (or sun)?

Whose got a suggestion on where we go? See post above for ideas.

IPJ, I love your idea of gearing up for a long trip to Italy. That would be awesome.

biggrin.gif
jeremy
I ama Dad!

If I was without responsibilities I would very quickly step into my old harness, I used to love the sport.

All I can do is offer places I've heard of.

Another tip:

My old colleague used to climb round Bamberg.
interplanetjanet
@tinap

I've never been to any of those places, so any one is as good as another. Perhaps the question should actually be which one we can easily get a book for. I'm not about to go climbing routes I know nothing about.

It's actually in France.
bummer
hi all, pls count me in. am good for 16th (is that a sunday or monday?)

only beginner but have my own shoes & harness. no rope though.
Marijke
Hi, I've just started in Munich this week for an internship. I'm used to climbing indoors, since I'm from the Netherlands, but not very good at it. I've climbed outdoors, but always toprope, and when encountering rock when crossing gleschers and trying to reach tops. I've got a harnass, shoes, abseilacht etc., but no rope or nuts. Don't have a car unfortunately. I'll try to make it on thursday.

I love how that statement is self-explanatory. biggrin.gif
tinap
@ bummer

We are planning on the Sunday, I think it is the 16th. Or maybe the 17th or 15th. Whatever the Sunday is.

@ IPJ, do you have guidebooks from last year? I agree, we need a place with a guidebook, but it is easier to go out and get one if I know where to get it for smile.gif And France sounds just as good as Italy (didn't you mention Italy in one of your Earlier posts? Hmm, might be losing it)

@ Marijke, you are more than welcome if you are available.

Who else, what do you know, where should we go, etc?
interplanetjanet
No, unfortunately I don't have any guide books. Some are easier to find than others, so perhaps we should do some homework to see what's available.

If someone is going to Thalkirchen, perhaps they can ask about them there? Anyone who lives in town (I don't) able to stop by Hugendubel to see what they've got?

And yes, you're crazy. wink.gif I mentioned Gorges du Verdon and La Palud, but they're in France. I've never been climbing in Italy (though one day I will make it to the Dolomites).
tinap
I can easily check both at Thalkirchen tonight, and Hugendubel tomorrow (wherever that is). The problem is, I don't know where any of these climbing places are, so I don't know what is too far away for a day trip. I would rather only drive an hour or two, and climb forever, than sit in the car forever.

I'll also ask whoever is at Thalkirchen tonight what they suggest and take it from there.

PS, I swear you mentioned the Dolomites, but must have been while I was googling places to climb. tongue.gif
tinap
OK, this is what I learned from the Thalkirchen group. Bad Hellbrun (Heilbrunn?) is close and has lots to do. It can be crowded, but has easy stuff and harder stuff. So let's go there.

I will pick up a guidebook tomorrow, unless the sky falls or something.

How's that sound so far?

Tina

I am in for Sunday 16th, but please take into account that: i never did this before, i had no equipment at all, so i mostly depend on all of you!!!

@ tina, we`ll meet next tuesday around 7pm at thalkirchen, right?

icemocha
This sounds so cool and I have always wanted to try climbing. I will have to warn you if I join I am really out of shape and have no equipment. Since I have friends back home who climb I will buy a pair of shoes, but will need to borrow everything else. (including basic instruction) huh.gif

Sunday the 16th is great for me.

is there a place near Ostbahnhof where one can do bouldering and wall climbing ? Someone told me about a place, and I think it was in that area.
interplanetjanet
Yeah, there's a climbing gym near Kultfabrik called Heaven's Gate. I've never climbed there, but I have stopped by to take a look. It looks like a good place to climb, but I was more impressed with Thalkirchen.
Tom17
Sorry to jump in so late on this post. After talking to IPJ at the 80's night I have decided to come along too.. 16th is good for me too.

I have all the gear I need for bolted climbing, except a rope.

As I do not have a car here, can anyone give me a spot in a car?

I have climbed at heavens gate too... As you say IPJ, it doesnt compare to Thalkirchen, but its not bad.. I dont remember what the bouldering wall is like there (is there one?) but the one at Thalkirchen looks fantastic... I must do more bouldering..

KGE, just jump on the U-Bahn to Brudermuhlstr... Its really not that much of a pain to get to if you already live in town (Ostbahnhof)
chewy
I'm in for a trip on sunday 15th May. I can't do 16th as i have to go to brussels on a business trip.
FatBoyFat
Hi,
I'd be interested in coming along! I haven't done any climbing in the last 4 years (and an awful lot of eating).

However, I have a harness, boots, rope, car, and other stuff. The rope is a few years old and was mostly used for Glacier travel (No leader falls). I guess it should be okay for top-roping if we need one?

I'm easy on the exact date, as long as it's not raining?

P.S. Anyone up for a little Klettersteig, when the weather clears.

Paul.
interplanetjanet
After all this discussion, I'm unfortunately not going to be able to make it at all this weekend. Sorry!
tinap
[COLOR=red]

OK, looks like Sunday the 15th is working best for everyone. Who has wheels besides me? I have all gear, including a rope, and any other ropes will be more than welcome as it will be good to have a few ropes going.

Now we need to figure out where to meet up in Munich, what time, confirm who is coming, etc, etc, etc!!!

The plan is easy routes, reviewing knots, making sure everyone knows how to belay safely, and just having a good, SAFE, time outdoors!

Tina
