Karneval on 11th November in Aachen

Do people in Aachen celebrate it in a big way?

Hi,

I live in Cologne where people go mad at Karneval time. My sister is coming to visit next week and I booked a hotel in Aachen thinking we could have a couple of days there (I've never been either) but stupidly I booked it for 11th November, aka first night of Karneval. Can anyone who lives there/has been there at Karneval time (I mean the one night in November not the week in February) please tell me if it's a big mistake to go there on 11th November? Usually I do love Karneval but I only dress up and stuff in February and don't bother with the 11th November. Are the streets and restaurants and pubs all going to be packed with people in fancy dress, swaing to Karneval music? Or will we still be able to find a few places where we can eat/drink without the Karneval madness?

Thanks for your help!

Hey Loz,

I have been in Aachen for 4 years. By 11th November you mean "Der ELFTE ELFTE ELF UHR ELF". i.e. 11.11 at 11.11am. This is the beginning of the Karnival. This has nothing to do with the Karnivalzur or Carnival parade/celebrations. They usually happen during the end of February.

Coming back to the question, 11th of November will just be like any other ordinary day. But if i vaguely recollect, i think i have seen a few people dressed up in costumes for evening parties. But not on a big scale though. This was my experience. Maybe, i was not aware of something big happening on this day.

Going to Aachen on 11th November for this, not worth it.

It's "Hoppedizawach" on the 11th.

Not normally a massive party unless you are a total "jeck" and hunt out the places where it is celebrated.

Can't tell you about Aachen but Duess and Krefeld area it seems to be just the hard core karnevlisten that get worked up about this and have a bit of a party in the local square or town hall area.

Of course you could be unlucky and have booked the hotel they want to use for their meetings.

St. Martin“s Day

... The day is celebrated in the evening of November 11 in Belgium (mainly in the Dutch-speaking Flanders), some parts of the Netherlands and most areas of Germany and Austria. Children go through the streets with paper lanterns and candles, and sing songs about St. Martin. Often, a man dressed as St. Martin rides on a horse in front of the procession ...
