Is this possible?

Yes, I know there is the ignore user function. Never tried it. Not entirely sold on it.
I've been in the Miscellaneous section, reading that thread about Muslims in Germany, and that freaking asshat nutjob Dastagir is seriously killing what could otherwise be a decent thread, as the guy doesn't really communicate, he just puts long posts of drivel about the end of it all, God (Allah), and whatever whatever.
To alleviate things such as personal bias, would there be a way to get people banned / modded via consensus (voting), to say "your peers are currently sick of your crap. you are banned for 10 days for reasons x,y,z"
Now I'm not stupid. But I can't remember how the registration process here works. Would a username be banned, or ultimately the registered email address? I know from time to time, the freaks of the world can't handle being hated on TT and just make a new user account and log back on. That means more work for the admins, which we of course don't want to burden them with!
Or at least banning someone from a thread?

That would get pretty arbitrary. Everyone has their buttons and would vote for anyone who pushes them to be banned. mlovett mentioned her car forum somewhere; this that and the other topic were banned and the place died of boredom. We need some diversity to sustain discussions and even arguments.
Use the ignore function, horsey, that's what it's for.

Voting to ban users sounds like a popularity contest to me. One of the popular kids has a tiff with another user and all the popular kids friends get together and vote to ban the other guy.
If somebody is completely out of line, you can use the Report function and if he's not but you just don't like him, you can ignore.

I'm for bans. Certain users engage in a continual pattern of disruptive behavior as evidenced by their astronomically low reputation on these boards. The worst part is their intimidating and bullying tactics, especially toward new users which for some reason has been tolerated without moderation for years.
My suggestion would be to place limits based on accumulated reputation points on how frequent a user can start or reply to topics. Or if a certain percentage of readers following a topic choose to ignore a user and that user has a bad reputation then that users reply should be removed and prevented from posting.

Nope the best way to fend off an attack here is to make a really nasty attack back. If they are long term users of TT then count their posts on their profile, use the "Find members posts" to gain a flavour of their putdowns and tell them you've been indulging in more valuable activity then them, which if all they do is attack newbies, will almost certainly be the case. PM them a nasty if necessary. That usually does the trick. Don't allow yourself to be intimidated by them.

Yes, but how do you explain BadDoggie? He's one of the best personalities on this board, but the "weaker" amongst us vote him down.
Now there are people who receive purely negatives, and net negatives. Banning people who get purely negatives would be worth considering. Although BadDoggie gets net negatives, I have no problem admitting I vote a lot of his posts positively because he says what people don't necessarily want to hear, but often need to hear.

User-voted bans would be stupid and cowardly. If you disagree with what someone is saying, write a post saying why. Or just give them a -1 and then cackle a little bit. When you get tired of disagreeing and have run out of -1s, hit the Ignore button.
If you really, really object to the way a person is acting here - attacking other members repeatedly, for example - hit the Report button. EdBob chooses who to ban, not you.

I always found Doggie okay. You have a rest from him at the moment as he has become a Dad.
I know of another established TTer of my personal acquaintance who is solid gold with lots of negs. The whole idea of negging and pozzing is crap imho. And I am not even negative rated myself. It just gives the 30 second soundbite mindset even less time to think things through.

I would not disagree with a petition to get rid of the Jokal.
