Restaurant Recommendations for Heidelberg

there isn't a wiki entry for restaurant and bars for heidelberg (i thought there was), so i will start this thread. so we can post recommendations here.

i have a friend coming here on business, she will be staying in the Altstadt and is looking for vegetarian restaurants. she is indian and i have recommended the indian restaurant at the end of Plöck street (her hotel is near there), but she said she also likes to eat other types of food!

One of the most interesting restaurants in HD right now is Zieglers - great fusion cooking with exciting flavours. The seared tuna fillet with sesame crust is to die for, as is the rack of lamb. For vegetarians they have grilled veg with goat cheese, tagliatelle ruccola & sundried tomatoes, but the caeser salad has anchovies. http://www.billyblues.de/ Chef's day off Monday.

Probably the finest vegetarian option to be had (anywhere) is the pasta with truffles at Piccolo Mondo http://www.piccolomondo-hd.de/ which can be served as a main. Apart from that not much veggie choice, though. Excellent fish for the meat-eaters.

I've never been to Waves, but I've been told the (all veggie) food is very unusual. http://www.restaurant-waves.de/

waves has limited opening hours. mostly lunch and afternoons. their website however said on thursdays they were open until 9 p.m.!

There is Akademie Restaurant, on the corner of Ploeck and Akademie Strasse. It's a modern Italian place, with several vegetarian dishes. I had dinner there last week and loved it... didn't have any meat and didn't even realized it until now.

AAARGH! Had dinner at Zieglers last night and the food was unrecognisable - we actually refused to pay. The seared tuna was swimming in a swamp of cold onion gravy, and the chicken was so dry it was Saharan. Clearly to be avoided at weekends.

Bar Centrale in Neuenheim Marktplatz is very nice. They have a range of salads and a veggie burger.

I hope the regular chef is still there midweek. The second chef usually makes a fair fist of the recipes (though not as good) but whoever was working last night should not be allowed near food, ever!

we ended up going to Cafe Rossi. Akademie was very full (and the public seemed like well-to-do peeps in their 50s). extrablatt was simply too noisy.
