Right honorable friends
Sooner or later I am going to lock myself out of my flat, it's a given. Recently arrived I have no friends where I can place spare keys. Any suggestion to where to put them, a hidden spot I can get to round the clock. Better sort it out right away before disaster strikes. Any suggestion much appreciated.

Here you go...just don't forget the access code and find a good spot to hang it:

Hey Bent, I can empathize, having locked my keys in a car with a running motor lately! Thankgoodness I had a door open at home and a spare set of keys...and a ride home from a sympathetic stranger.
No great idea, as yes, under the mat and all is where any thief will look. However, until someone comes up with a brilliant suggestion, there's always the method you used as a kid: Get a chain and wear a spare key around your neck. Under a shirt, no one will know.
And if any female looks under your shirt and sees it...you're going to score massive pity points with her and maybe have no more worries about where to leave your spare key. (Sorry if there's a significant other somewhere else.)
Good luck!

Keep the spare in your wallet?
I've worked out a pretty good system ever since I locked myself out and paid the locksmith 100€ for 1 minute of work. If I walk out of the apartment without my wallet or keys, I borrow 3€ from the local Kiosk, buy a tail comb at the main station (the supermarket there closes at 11:30 or so), take the metal wire, bend it into a Z shape and use it to push back the catch. Works like a charm and I have a pretty secure door.

My neighbour leaves their keys with me in case they lose them. I also am on guinea pig and plant duty in the holidays.
I don't give my keys to them though!

Just ask a neighbour. Or give them to me, if you trust, LOL.

You could do what this guy did:

Change the lock for one of those digital code things. Never need a key again until Alzheimers gets you.
Store a key with

Get one of those fold-flat/built into a credit card keys and keep it in your wallet.

Have a piece of titanium surgically grafted to your finger and get that cut to the key shape you need.

Having our own house & garden while still in the UK, our solution to the age-old problem of locking oneself out of the house was to bury a spare key in a watertight container in a spot only we knew about. This scheme worked perfectly for over 23 years in that (1) no burglar ever let himself in, (2) we had to dig up & use the hidden key once for real and (3) it was free of charge to implement.

Actually I have had a rethink and now have the perfect solution.
Plus points for this is that it blends in with the background pretty well and can be used with no formal training

Could you post your address here, too?

I believe that if you hide a key outside and sometimes finds it, gains entry to your apartment and robs you blind, your Hausrat insurance won't cover it because you have been fahrlässig. Or something.
That said, we may or may not have a spare key hidden in an undisclosed location.
