Bonfire night in Berlin?

I know it's an English tradition but...

Highwayside
Hi there,
Does anyone know of any bonfire's taking place?
Thanks
Callie
Seriously? Really, why would they?
RainKing
From what I read, just pick your spot near any expensive car in Berlin and await events.

I would love to have a bonfire night event... I'm so sad to be missing fireworks etc. Surely a few people could get together in a park somewhere, set off a few small fireworks, wave some sparklers around, eat toffee apples (I'll make them!) without facing any trouble for it? I have no idea what the legalities of public fireworks are here.

I know of a few, but they usually happen on the 1st of May!

I noticed one or two bonfires in gardens here on Halloween, and heard quite a few fireworks going off too (though they must have stockpiled them for a long time as they aren't legally on sale at the moment). Perhaps something pagan going on - AFAIK Guy Fawkes Night in the UK was an appropriation of a Celtic fire-festival that already occurred, and I've been in Ireland for Halloween where I've seen bonfires and fireworks (and I'm sure they weren't celebrating the burning of Catholics!).

Otherwise, the largest bonfire in Brandenburg is held annually here in Basdorf at Easter (Osterfeur), more than likely another Christian appropriation of the pagan festival of Beltane (cf Edinburgh Beltane fire festival).

If you are nostalgic for a parkin (gingerbread) fix, lebkuchen is a good alternative, and now in the shops ready for Christmas!

Wait just 8 weeks or so until Silvester (New Year's Eve).

The legalities from Wikipedia:

Im Allgemeinen ist das freie Abschießen pyrotechnischer Gegenstände nur in der Silvester/Neujahrsnacht erlaubt.
So the straight answer is "No". Eating toffee apples is probably Straffrei (unless they could be classed as a dangerous weapon...)

Heh. You'd probably have to get a permit from the Sonderbeauftragte für Kariesangelegenheiten for that one.

Thanks to the people who wrote something informative or expressed an interest.

Thanks! I can't tell if this is open to the general public, or aimed just for the families of the school...

Its strange there are not many because bonfires are very popular in Germany.

Books anybody?
