Just Moved to Halle and I only speak English.

Tips and advice Please

JosephineN
Hi My name is Josephine and I just recently moved to Halle from America. I am a Business English Teacher at a local language school.

I speak English and Chinese and am looking for fun things to do in Halle. I like to run and exercise. I also enjoy fashion, music, and popular culture.

I'm also looking for a church that has English services or even English translation for its German-speaking services.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome.
You are always welcome at our little gatherings, just keep an eye out for any thread that mentions a night out in Leipzig.

Hi Jo,

A good way to meet people is to srart learning German. Register at VHS Halle for affordable German lessons or ask at the Uni. You'll need German if you want to live independently in Halle. You'll also need it for your teaching. I suspect you may have to teach learners with low levels of English.

I presume you're working as a freelance teacher. As a freelance teacher you're supposed to be working at different schools. If you just work for one, you're in danger of not being classified a freelancer if there's a check. Also if you work as a freelancer you have zero rights. The school can and will give you no support when the work dries up. They will also have no qualms about giving your hours to another teacher if it suits them for whatever reason. In your own interest talk to other schools/collegers in Halle and Leipzig and don't really on one school.

Regarding God. There's is http://www.soli-deo.de/ which is run I believe by a group of Americans.

As Paul said you're welcome to join us in Leipzig whenever,

Good luck

Hi Jo,

What part of the states do you come from? I moved to Dresden from Austin about 7 months ago. Still no Job

@les,
Thanks for giving me a link. I was able to contact some people and I have two churches to visit. One is an Anglo church in Leipzig and they have a British pastor there.

@Malinche,
I come from San Francisco actually. What is your profession? I'm actually looking for a second company to work for too to pick up more hours.

I don't live in Halle but commute there for school. Nice enough city. I definitely second the advice about learning German, it'll make things a lot easier.

Are you interested in art or history? There are some good museums!

Annual things that I've thought were interesting would be the Lichterfest (a sort of local festival in the city and along the river) and the annual volunteer day, where residents can sign up to help out with local projects. Look into those once you can speak some German, it would probably be a great way to meet new people. Those are both in the summer, though. Hmm. Christmas market is coming up!

Hello,

Talking about exercise, my wife goes to the "welcome lady fitness" which is near the Rehnbahnkreuz tram stop (near the train station) and is women-only. She seems happy about that, so I guess it is OK.

We have good experience with the Inlingua courses. The volkshochschule (VHS) in Halle is unfortunately far away from everything else. There are also courses given by the University ( http://www.sprachenzentrum.uni-halle.de/ ) but I think it may be only for University related students and post-docs.
