Having a full medical check-up - Hamburg

Which medical practitioner to go to for a check-up

SweetAngelSmile
My mother suggested that I go for a full medical checkup soon as my family has much history with diabeties, cholesterol, heart desises... The only problem is that I'm in Germany! I have no idea what kind of doctor to book an appointment with. Is it normaly 1 doctor who does everything, or do I have to go from doctor to doctor? And if I have to book many appointments with different doctors, what does a full medical check up consists of? And is this all covered by my insurance (TKK)?

You probably want a 'Facharzt für Allgemeinemedizin' (general practitioner). Start there and if there's something they can't do themselves, they'll give you an Überweisung (referral) to any specialists. Insurance coverage is generally very comprehensive here, but ask if you'll incur any extra charges for the specific tests (they're usually very good about telling you ahead of time).

Depending on your age, your insurance should pay for a Gesundheitscheck, as they call it here, every couple of years. My regular doctor (Hausarzt) does all the exams and testing in his office. If you don't have a regular doc, call up an Allgemeinmediziner, as Sprudeln mentioned or an Internist and ask for an appointment.

I am not sure whether it "depends on your age". I think you are entitled to a yearly check up from your insurance. Many people don't avail of it .. until they reach a "certain" age. Whatever that age is, is up to you.

I go to the gyno once a year. Dentist twice a year. I usually went to my GP (Internist in my case. I think they are considered-ish the same as Allgemeinarzt) when I had something wrong .. and had the check up at the same time. This year (I guess I have reached that age) I made an appointment for a check up without any reason.

If you do not have a doctor, why not ask here if anyone could recommend one where you live. Nothing better than having a good doctor.

I just checked this again and the Gesundheitscheck (which is different from the Krebsvorsorge) is paid for every two years after the age of 35. Women 20 and over and men 45 and over are entitled to a yearly Krebsvorsorge exam. I also go to my gyno twice a year and insurance pays for this so there may be a few differences.

Because the OP is under 35 it would be best for her to check with her insurance provider as to exactly what would be covered if she wanted to have a complete physical done. Her family history would be taken into consideration.

According to your profile you are 27 years of age and you say that your mother has suggested you go for a full medical and your problem is that you are in Germany. Believe me, your being in Germany is the LEAST of your problems.

Are you planning any trips home soon, maybe during the holidays? Maybe you can get a checkup scheduled with your family doctor back home in the coming months? If you just have a lack of deutsch communication skills, most German doctors speak english if you can get past the staff and schedule an appointment. Another tactic is to find a local doctor, get to the office early (as soon as they open the door), and see if you can wiggle your way in to an open or cancelled slot. If you have private insurance or pay cash they'll move you up the queue. Good luck.

Nope, a full physical takes time and you definitely need an appointment because they have to schedule all the tests and procedures. They won't do it on a drop in basis.
