Any budget hotels in Mainz?

Wife needs somewhere to stay

Old Janner
We are an oldish English couple living in Darmstadt. We don't speak German and don't have any friends or family here. I have to go into hospital in Mainz for a major operation which could involve a stay of four weeks.

Does anybody know of any budget hotels in Mainz where the wife could stay, rather than commute every day from Darmstadt to visit me?

We asked at the hospital, the Uni-Klinikum, but they just came up with four and five star hotels.

I would look on www.hrs.com under B&B's or gasthouses for the most reasonable price.

You might want to try the Inndependence Hotel. It does not look like a 4 star hotel and it is run by handicapped staff (if that is the politically correct term). The prices are not what I would call budget but their internet prices will probably be negotiable if your wife wants to stay in Mainz for 4 weeks. It is also within walking distance of the Uniklinik.

Their web site is also in English.

The Mainz Youth Hostel in Weisenau is reasonably priced and it is about 3km from the Uniklinik. They take all ages these days and are clean and well run.

There is also the Etap hotel for €39/night. This is more like a bed and breakfast place and is in the middle of an industrialised area. It would possibly be fine for a weekend stay, but staying 4 weeks there would be a bit dull.

have you tried the Ibis Hotel near Bahnhof Roemisches Theater; othewise there is the Etap Hotel and the new B&B in Mainz-Hechstheim, but you need a car to get to and from those places.

There doesn't appear to be much in the way of cheap hotels in Mainz. The hotel I used when I auditioned was the cheapest I could find - about €45/night for a single room, very nice, clean, quiet, about 10 mins' walk from the station (the other way from the Uni-Klinikum but there may be a bus); Hotel Moguntia (http://www.booking.com/hotel/de/hotelmoguntia.en.html). I would definitely recommend it for an older lady who doesn't speak German.

Good luck with your operation, and if your wife is over here and at a loose end, tell her to look me up for Kaffee & Kuchen!
