U2 to mark Wall anniversary with free concert in Berlin - Germany

The Local
Superstars U2 announced Wednesday they will perform a free concert at Germany's Brandenburg Gate to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The Irish rockers will perform in front of the landmark in the German capital on November 5 as part of the MTV Europe Music Awards, the group announced on their website.

The performance will be a prelude to the "fall of the wall" celebrations in Berlin and will be beamed in to the televised broadcast of the awards.

"It'll be an exciting spot to be in, 20 years almost to the day since the wall came down." said U2 manager Paul McGuinness. "Should be fun."

Nooooooo. The most overrated band in history! Why not a German band?
Bonehead stinks with his arrogance.

Ticket booking with Eventim only worked if you already had a membership with them, and the English site wouldn't even work.... so it was a waste of time even trying to get tickets.... rigged!

@berniebird: not true I bagged 2 tickets and wasn't registered (I got cookie errors on trying to complete the order but managed to get past that eventually). The site was pretty non-responsive at 9am CET but I tried again an hour later and it was working ok, from what I can see now all tickets have been got, but feel free to try yourself.

Sold out now :(

Robbie Williams gave a free concert within 5 minutes walk from my apartment last week and I didn't bother going. I can say the same about U2, I wouldn't even cross the road to see them for free. They were good in the 80s and early 90s, but now are a complete has-been band. Having said that, they were part of history when playing the concert here 20 years ago, so it is a good choice to have them again for the celebrations.

Well maybe nilweiss has a point, maybe they should use a German band for this world event, lets see, who? Boney M,naw most people think they are either British or American, David hasellhoff, well his surname sounds about right and after all they did use him all those years ago when the wall did come down,Scorpions..who?.U2,they have been around a long time, sang out against apartheid in South Africa when it probably wasn't a cool thing to do,made millions of fans aware of the situation down there, sang out about the troubles in northern Ireland, what ever you think of U2 they have done there bit in their own way to make the world a better place and yeh i can here the cynics laughing in the back ground.U2 are in my opinion the best live band in the world, probably the only band that can go on tour for almost two years filling large stadiums at a time and I think Berlin should be grateful that Bono and the boys have agreed to come and play for free in this grand city,God knows they don't need the publicity . By the way Berlinski, to quote from Pulp Fiction, comparing Robbie williams and U2,ain't the same game, ain't the same ball park,sh1t mother fuc*er ain't even the same sport.

no surprise that U2 is trying to horn in on any newsworthy event. perhaps we could launch them into space the next time ESA has something to send up...

Achtung Baby!

"I have run. I have crawled. I have scaled these city walls.... Only to be with you."

I was very much looking forward to the concert and that historic event. This has been ruined by the U2 Junta's raising of a wall to block people's view. If no one from U2 can see the obscene hypocrytical nature of this act then they really have lost the plot if they hadn't already. The free ticket holders will get in to act as stooge extras as part of Viacom's MTV's broadcast of the Awards Ceremony. The concert will be a brief affair.

The only other people getting a free view will be the inhabitants of the elite Adalon. The bankers of disaster from the balcony of the Dresdner HQ, the American embassy staff and perhaps the rich and famous who may watch fro the Academy of Art. It seems as nothing has changed in the last twenty years after all.
'Tear down this wall Mr. Bono', if you really want us to know you mean what you say.

Kind of classic of Bono to jump on this bandwagon too, and quite amusing to see the self righteous cock taken down a peg or two as well. Every time there's a story like this Bono jumps on it and associates himself and his band with the surge of human feeling because he cares about [s]his bank balance and knows this will help sell his ever-less creative records[/s] these things and is happy to help in any way he can.

Outcry as barrier replaces Berlin Wall at 20th anniversary U2 concert

The irony of the erection of a "wall" covered in white plastic sheeting almost identical to the colour of the wall that divided the German capital for almost 30 years was lost on no one.
Apparently they were concerned that 100,000 people would turn up. During the World Cup in 2006, seven times that number congregated there without any major problems.

What's the difference between God and Bono?

You don't see God walking around Dublin thinking he's Bono.
